Edited by: Zarithas on 03/05/2006 19:57:55 Edited by: Zarithas on 03/05/2006 19:56:39 Now, I have absolutely nothing against Britain, or anyone who lives there, or Ireland or Scotland or England or Wales. My grandfather and his ancestry all come from Liverpool, England or in the Liverpool district. I'm an American, and I have to admit that I have a better opinion of British people than Americans, and I want to make it clear that I am not trying to show ANY racism what-so-ever here.
Anyway, the point is: why are there SOOOO many British EVE players? In every corp i've joined, and wherever I go, anyone who is speaking English is 9 times out of 10 a Brit. In all my other games, i'm used to it being 1 times out of 10 a Brit, and 9 times out of 10 an American/Canadian, but for whatever reason, this place is just FLOWING with British people. So: why? Is EVE advertised more there? Is there something in the game that may attract British players more than Americans? I remember when I first came here, and I saw on the forums some corps were recruiting British players only, but I saw TONS of these. In all of the MMORPGs, and any game really, that I have played, it is completely dominated by us slobbering, average IQ, obese Americans. But I remember when I joined SOHK, it was a HUGE corp, yet there were only about 4 or 5 American players there.
So, to sum it up, what makes this game such a Brit magnet, and not an American one? -------------------------------- Joria Klex > it's sad really cuz i know for a fact i would utterly destroy u all in RL combat |

What large (population-wise) country is closest to Iceland?
You guessed it.
Britain.

Not sure really, I've noticed it as well. would say british is the most common nationality of eve player, though close to US. Perhaps advertising for eve (we had a few magazine things and maybe a few UK sites)
Maybe UK players play more MMORPGs, maybe we are more sci-fi oriented.. who knows
it is weird though

The thing is, I have played TONS of MMORPGs where there are very few British people and very many American people. It's the complete opposite here. -------------------------------- Joria Klex > it's sad really cuz i know for a fact i would utterly destroy u all in RL combat |

Maybe EVE gets worse reviews or something in American magazines/websites? I know that a lot of popular games magazines here in Britain like EVE a lot, and always give it a good review/score. Could be.

Hmm, perhaps its the mentality of american players vs british players. Maybe british players want a slower paced game whereas american players want a faster game like WoW. Have you noticed that there are few young british who play mmorpgs? Perhaps younger people in the USA play more mmorpgs, and eve isnt their thing.
This is a wealth of possibilities, though i cant see any that's blindingly obvious.

I don't think that's necessarily true, I don't know any Americans that think down on Brits. As a matter of fact, quite the opposite. All the Americans I know think very highly of them. We know they'll always have our back in case the **** hits the fan, and vice versa.
I also think that Americans are too addicted to FPS games, so most of the gamers on this side of the pond are stuck on games like Doom, Quake and such. Boring....
The only FPS game I like is Battlefield: 1942, but I haven't touched that game since I found EVE a little over a week ago. My other favorite game is Rome: Total War, and I'm afraid that I might never play that game again!

Edited by: Coconut Joe on 03/05/2006 20:15:26 A few of the gameing rags here go on and on about how smeggin great Eve is. PC Gamer (UK) hasn't failed to mention Eve at least once every issue for the last year I think.
With that kind of publicity, it's not surpriseing so many of us give Eve a try.

Well I never played these online games but my brother is an old pro - anyway when i used to watch him play and the rare times i got on his account there were no Brits
and I thought this game would be the same but am happy its more mixed
(not be rude) some Americans sounds soooo bloody funny on ts (TS is new to me so might make it moreso than normal) and 1 or 2 sounded a bit geeky...
but yeah i got into the game via my bro so no answer to why there are more brits

Us british Prefer a more intelegent more gritty game. You dont get that from the mass produced MMO's [i refuse to call games like wow MMO.Roleplay.PG as there isant any roleplaying to be seen not like you can get between amarr mimitar roleplay corps, also of course the player run news/events help too].
Also there is no repetative grinding to level up and no end game as such.

I think thats part of it. A lot of the online reviews from here in the USA that ive seen about EVE say that it is too hard to get into, the learning curve is too high, blah blah blah.
A lot of Americans, especially young 20 something like me, want something more fast paced and in their face, I think. I prefer something a little more strategic myself.
No offense to you FPS lovers out there at all, I play them too.

It depends on which server you are on and who you talk to on WoW; I knew some RPers in the short time I actually played the game.
But thats the great thing about EVE: Everybody playing together.

Not that it's an accurate representation of membership demographics, but I find this interesting:
(from EVE Info, scroll down, on the left)
Top Visitor Countries:
USA- 23810 GB- 15547 Ger- 7956 RssFd-6058 Can- 3256 Neth- 3035 Den- 2954 Swe- 2665 Fin- 2176 Chn- 2147
Sure, the numbers for the US and GB are inflated relative to most of the other nations, as the site is in English, but it this may give the appearance there are actually more US players total, which would make sense, as the US population is nearly 300 million compared to around 60 million in the UK. Though the UK has a healthy advantage in EVE memberships per capita.

Yup, PC Gamer UK loves EvE - probably because one of their reviewers seems to play a lot. I think it's Jim Rossignol. They often review major patches, and have features about aspects of in-game politics. Last month they featured EvE in a sort of "how-to" guide. This probably attracts a fair number of UK players.

There is no such thing as a British accent tbh.
It's highly dependant on which part of the country you are from.
I think the reason there seems to be more brits than americans is that the game was launched by a European company in Europe before it was pushed in the US where as all other MMORPG's are published by American companies in the US first. |

Its definatly a combination of things in my mind.
The depth and richness of eve.
Fact that eve came out in europe first.
The way people of all Alien backgrounds are supported and able to work together be they Chinese russian dutch and .

In America, we make fun of the British accent ALL the time. In school, on comedy shows, on the Internet, etc. Many people think it sounds very "sissy" and funny (no offense, I don't personally think this). In my opinion, there is no American accent. It's just...normal speaking. But then, a German would say there's no German accent, of course. -------------------------------- Joria Klex > it's sad really cuz i know for a fact i would utterly destroy u all in RL combat |
