Also, regarding not seeing many Brits in other mmo's, most other mmo's localise their servers. I've played DAoC (Euro and US servers different) EQ2 (same) SWG (have a guess) and others. I know in most mmo's we can play on any server but most tend to gravitate towards servers where most people are on a similar timezone.
Oh and as for us Brits and why a lot of us play EVE, no idea. My corp is a nice mix of nationalities. 1 Aussie, 4 Americans, a few Canadians and the rest European. ___________________________________________________ Serenity Prime Is Recruiting |

i have never seen an advert of eve in any channel. though i believe that the only reason you didnt see many brits before, because other games have servers in different area. eve is only one server.
nothing to do with the fact that the server is in london at all. any one in the world can connect without any problem.

Edited by: Grez on 23/09/2006 19:23:30 EVE was and still is hyped here like you wouldn't believe. PCGamer UK has adverts in every issue, and since the huge GH infiltration of that corp thing (can't remember the name now), they've had atleast a one-page (if not more) piece on EVE every other issue. RMR got a 6 page review, and scored very well (89% I think). Not to mention most people think of PCG UK as the industry standard here. They're very good at reviewing games (although some seem a little odd, but everyone's allowed their own views), and in general, cater for a wide veriaty of gamers. I'm guessing this is where a lot of UK gamers read about EVE and thing "Coo, me go play!".
There's also EVE boxes still for sale here, my local games store has atleast 10-20 on the shelf, and everytime I go there, there's always atleast one or two gone.
There's also the added factor that the server cluster is in London (which means low pings for us). I believe PCGamer US took the UK's reviews for EVE, but didn't really pimp the game as much as PCGamer UK, since a lot of reviews from PCGamer UK get taken and translated for the other countries (Russia, Italy, etc).
And not forgetting that generaly, the cross-atlantic connections tend to suck for us. Broadband is still developing here (just last year we got a widely available 10MB connection from several providers, but the upload sucks), so connecting to US servers to play a game tends to suck (and a lot of companies (although they say their servers are EU based) just host their EU servers in America). But our two major hosting locations in London absolutly rock with their backbone and connections, so a lot of newer companies are starting to host their servers here (Huxley is going to have UK based servers, aswell as some other company (forgot the name)).
A few reasons why EVE might be slightly more popular to us Brits, and Europeans in general. ---

well as a brit i do crave disapotment, downtime just as i wake up, server updates, the nerfing of all the stuff i have fitted to my ship (and the ships them selfs). I just love the disapointment that eve has to offer :D
also in my opinion, wich i will use brits history and the Star Was film's to describe our love for eve is that we love empires wether it be ruling over the world Or hunting down thoses damn droids its the power that mose of us will never get out of the real world so play the games that we can be our own god in such as EVE
thats my opinion burn me for it, BUT! thats what i think!

I would say it's because sci-fi over here doesnt have the same stigma attached to it as it does in America. Generations have grown up watching sci-fi on the BBC. Doctor Who is the highest rated show in the UK and has been since the 60's, then you also have Blake's 7 and the Quatermass experience which were both top rated shows. I remember discussing STNG and B5 at school and no one took the mick. The first spacey games on the PC (the star trek one where you could first control the enterprise springs to mind) were incredibly popular as well.

Britain has a good history of scifi entertainment in multipul forms.
Games such as Elite were common on systems like C64 and Amiga which were availble when the player of average age in EVE (27 according to a recent interview) were at school.
Television as well with shows like Doctor Who, Blakes 7 and other cheesy but fun scifi entertainment are world renownd and have huge followings. Even on the less serious side with Red Dwarf shows that scifi is an outlet for truely imaginative minds to do as they wish as fantasy fiction is to an extent pigeon holed to always be compared to the work of Tolkien.
Books as well have huge success with the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and even early scifi such as the War of the Worlds still are popular not only in Britain but world wide.
So you have a race that are in the very least closet scifi geeks given a game where they can interact with other scifi geeks and blow them up if they like! I myself as a Brit hate to be pushed and guided into playing a game a certain way. Games like WoW and EQ basically give you one way to play and if you don't like it well we will give you some other stuff to do. PVP in WoW is an after thought so you more or less have to go PvE which is a dull dull grind.
With EvE I can do what I like within game mechanics. I could be a miner (boring), a manufacturer (making ships < blowing them up), pirate (YAARRRRR), a soldier or any of the many differnt careers that are possible with the current skills. I don't need to grind up and do the same thing over and over to advance in EVE. I just need to float along at my own pace and do what I want to do. Its this control and openness that to me at least is what is appealing.
But this is just me and my fellow country men could just all be blood thirsty empire builders who can't be ratted taking the world over again so we will take EVE over instead ------------------------------------------------------

I'd just like to point out that I am both happy and proud to be British, that's beside the point however. I think the increased numbers that people are noticing are either: 1) because it's only one server or 2) the first front of our new plan to yet again rule almost the entire world, if we control the net we control everything!
So...either you'll be seeing more of us or we'll be Ruling you again soon. (Just kidding, before anyone flys off on one at me)

Much though I hate to burst your bubble...
The geographical name for the bunch of islands off the coast of France - including Ireland - is the British Isles.
Ulster is part of Ireland which is very definitely British. Don't confuse Ireland, the island, with Eire, the republic.
Sorry but im gonna have to make a point of arguing this. Its simple Ireland the island may be part of the british isles we are not part of britain the uk or england not only is it a political fact its a sociological one as well i know of very few Irish people south of the border who would consider Ireland to be British even if it is as you say part of the brtitish isles -----------------------

Most Americans I know have either a positive or fairly neutral view of Britain. As for my view as an American, it is positive. Why, I am uncertain of other than I have been given no real reason to dislike any o' the lot. Oh... and I do not much care for biased newscasting here so I read the BBC News online.
What I do not understand is the supposed past-time of Brits bashing Americans. What's that about? I mean yeah, obviously Bush somehow got elected, but most I know, even of conservative parties, are opposed to the war in Iraq.
P.S. I'm a proud Californian -our governor took fantastic initiative and pretty much said "Screw you and your environmental policy Bush; I'm going to do what I can to cut greenhouse emissions!" -----------------------------------------------

Unfortunately a large amount of the travelling American public isn't the best representation of your country. More of the normal population need to get on a plane. Without getting political the war really hasn't helped, its not popular in Europe.
My only question is why does it take 15 Americans on a conference call 4 days to fix anything?
