Hi,
it seems I'm running into a wall a bit :/ I've managed to ***** down on myself in selecting a new laptop, but the manufacturer gives me the choice between an ATI Mobility X700, X600 and an NVIDIA GeForce Go7400
Now I've had a look at the specs of the cards, but each time after reading two words I faint as I am by far not a technically adept person :/
Anybody here who uses any of the above cards? Feedback would be appreciated :/

Edited by: damicatz on 05/05/2006 02:02:00 A rather interesting selection of video cards. The x700 and x800 are last generation cards. The 7400 is a current generation card just released. But the 7400 is a budget card with only a 64-bit memory interface. But the 7400's featureset is more advanced and as a result the card itself is more futureproof though slower.
If you are planning on using Vista, I would recommend the 7400. It may not be a DX10 card (neither is the x700 or x800) but it'll have more of the features required.

More to the point: If you want a card that will most LIKELY have a longer driver set life, then go with the nvidia.
My compaq x1000 with a mobility radeon isn't supported with the new catalyst drivers. This is an Intel Centrino Mobility rig with all the bells and whistles and less than 3 years old. (Omega 5.6 were the last to work.)
The forums for laptop owners are usually weighted heavily toward the nvidia chip in preference to ATI's evil driver support.
So from the burnt a coupla' times benches: GET an NVIDIA rig.
that is all. ----- ------------ New sig coming soon "Ubuntu 5.10 + cedega 5.1.3 + EVE = happy camper" Not READY for primetime OS |

Ok, thanks for the feedback sofar. I've gotten a bit scared from the "driver support lifetime" on ATI ...
I'm not concerned with DX10 in all honesty, that is so far away and the current graphics engine for EVE will be the primary engine as confirmed by CCP for a long time so DX10 / Vista - well, I'll see it when it gets there tbh.
The card itself ... I need it to perform (very) well :/ Specifically for the larger engagements where now I just stare at slideshows :P

Just outta curiousity, where can you buy these cards, because I've looked and looked, but could never find anything, and mine is pretty outdated (ATI X200 ftl). Newegg never has laptop cards for sale, and it's irritating.
My sig was CONCORDOKKENED. I blame Wrangler H4x. |

you get a choice of cards when you buy a new laptop... can't upgrade them.
