Before I start, I'd like to make 2 things clear:
1. The ship I was using was a caracal, fitted for PvE. Had Kinetic/Thermal passive shield hardeners on fit for mission/belt ratting.
2. My philosophy is if you fit your ship to run, you've lessened your fighting ability. As such, I don't fit WCS.
So I was belt ratting one day, and I saw a war target hop into the system so, through extensive beating-it-in-to-my-head from leadership to never engage 1on1 (or any time where we don't have the advantage), I decide it's time to leave, without collecting loot cans. That wasn't enough -- he warps to the belt I'm in right as I'm about to go into warp and scrambles me, forcing me to fight. This guy is in a Condor, so I think I have a chance. 3 Heavy launchers and 2 assault launchers are hitting him. Meanwhile, he's doing pretty mean damage to me, seeing as I don't have the right resistances. My next thought was to release my drones. At this point I'm almost into his armor, so he starts targetting my drones. My next move is to get my drones back before he blows them up. Seeing this, he turns on his MWD to get some of his shields back. It's enough time for me to get a warp off, and I'm gone. Chances are he would have called in his buddies had I stayed there any longer.
Is there any way I could have performed better, seeing as I have relatively no PvP experience? ___________________________ |

1) Let your drones die -
2) Use Active Hardeners
3) Caracal should have all heavy missiles, no assaults
4) Practice :) Losing fights are just going to happen, whether you want them to or not. Get used to losing ships, and you'll notice you will start defeating others more often ^^

Against speedy little targets, find some way to slow them down. Especially with heavy launchers. Assuming you can't use tech II precisions... web em, nos em, paint em. ____________________________ Signature file size to large, please keep it under 24000 bytes - Petwraith How's this? -imo

well that's not very nice.
And in actuality, it's any landing you can walk away from, but I thought I'd change it.
Maybe it's just me, but if I'm in a PvE ship, and I'm not looking for a fight, if I can get out in one piece, I'm happy.
Although I must say, it is fun to wipe the floor with people who try and engage you.

In fact yours is the stupid comment.
A first timer with all the wrong fittings survived an encounter with someone who was looking to engage.
All he did wrong was care for his drones IMO.
To the OP : BIG point to remember is that when a MWD goes on the Sig Rad of the ship using it INSTANTLY jumps up while the speed climbs more slowly, if you hit ships with missiles in this window of oppertunity you do huge relative damage to the target (180+ with Heavies to a frig with average skills).
Also as has been said before, fit a web, and if your in an empire war or ratting in low sec or something then that web will save you at some point and should not be considered a gimping of your set up.

And yours is more stupid.
Web's are key when you're fighting friggies, and just let your drones take damage and be destroyed, that's time that your ship isn't being hurt.

To all you saying about the drones: I read in another thread that returning the drones while a person is firing on them is a huge nuisance to said person. Had he not warped 80km away he would have died, as I was at 80% shields and he was at 0% shields, 97%ish armor. But all that's in the past... now I fly a Ferox. ___________________________ |

Although, you need to be careful, while people will think twice about tackling you, when they do, you can expect them to be prepared.

Killing a Condor with only heavies and no tackle is impossible if it was the Condor pilot who attacked (i.e. knew what he was doing and will not get killed by oversized missiles)

Return the single drone he is firing at, this will keep the rest on him and he will lose the lock on the drone. The little one will also recharge shields in your drone bay instantly, so you can release it back onto the frig.

Edited by: Brem Watson on 05/05/2006 02:23:44 Yup, Ferox will put fear in many. I decided to help out a corp mate (in a Carac) ratting in .3 tonight. I scanned to see who was in system, looked that the pilot info and what corp they were with. Most guys were just newbs so I wasn't worried there, but one guy (in a carac) with a pirate corp.
He warps in while we're killing some rats sits there as I'm ready to let loose all of my heavies and warp scramble him if he does something stupid. He warped out.
Ferox insurance FTW!

Web would have helped a lot.
However, except for uber expensive faction/officer webs, they all have a range of 10km.
A Nos is almost as good as a web, and medium "normal" named Nos are fairly affordable and give you an extra km or two. Problem with Nos is that they are high slots.
Five assault launchers on a Caracal is a sweet option if you are fitting specificly for anti-frig work. With good skills, you don't even need a web.

These two points contridict each other, you don't use a PvE setup if your planning on standing your ground. Its pretty obvious that your second point is just an attempt to make you seem hardcore, given the fact that you have little PvP experience.
My piece of advice is that this fight should of never taken place. You should have been aligned and ready to warp to a safespot immdiatly after the enemy jumped in. TBH your lucky an enemy gang didn't jump into system and warp on top of you after the condor tackled you.
Whether you could improve on your tactics or not is a moot point. Tactics differ with different ships and setups, and you should never be fighting with an NPCing setup.

His statement does hold some water though. I may not do all that much PvPing right now other than being ganked, but I wouldn't want to waste slots on WCS if I didn't have to.
If I go out, I wanna go out with my missiles blasting full strength, not trying to run away and failing. -------

NOS: Nos is perfect, It's so good vs small ships, it's simple and easy , one med NOS, and a web if you like, and ONLY light drones when ratting in a cruiser IMO. Drones are awsome in combat, and yea fair enough they will speed up rat-killing times, but when u get jumpped by a cepter, there gunna be the only things hitting it, for any significant dmg. As soon as a red jumps in, or hostile, lock, don't give them the chance to lock you first, and just NOS before you shoot, that way if he wasent there for trouble he will have a nice warm warning anyways, he won't be hurt. but if he is? then throw on the web, hey, ask for ransom while your at it ^^
I am a crow pilot for cepters, and can tell you , as soon as a med/large nos turns on, it's gg no re (no armor rep, no mwd) so u cant get away from web, to escape warp jammer. So use a NOS, it's the most powerfull wep in the game IMO.

he could have been in a crow. you can set the game to show you the ship type of the other guy, since the crow looks like the condor in almost every way. i remember never knowing when a ship was a t2 or t1 version
overview settings -> ships -> check ship type
also, if youre in a caracal, use all assaults, a webber, a sensor booster is nice if you have long range on missiles, since many things will be badly hurt by the time they reach you. an afterburner helps, since the caracals main advantage is range, you want to get out of the enemies range.
i wouldnt put a nos on a caracal. just seems really odd to me. its like putting a gun on it
and use only heavy missiles. a target painter and stasis webifier can help take out smaller targets. and dont bother drones on a caracal

I can only re-iterate that I was surprised that you returned your drones. As long as he's firing on them, he isn't firing on you. The "return only the drone being fired on" sounds like a great tactic.
All in all, nicely done. You wern't fitted for PVP, this puts you at a disadvantage so to speak. Which means you were on the defensive. You didn't know if he possible had backup 1 jump off. And, as you have been taught, never fight a fair fight. Fight the fights that you KNOW you're gonna win. So your primary goal was to escape intact. This you did, and as such you succeeded.
Nicely done!

Your missiles would probably have wasted him in one volley if you had fired while he was using the MWD. His signature radius is 500% more when using it, so your missile damage would be several times higher.
Its hard to fight when you are not prepared for it. At least you didnt freeze up. I think it was a good effort.
Other posters have commented on better ship setups, so i wont repeat it. --- The Eve Wiki Project |

Well, it wasn't my "first" engagement. I've been ganked before -- dual scrams/target jammers; I couldn't even put up a fight against that.
As far as other people have said: Next time I'll just return the one drone (keep in mind a caracal can only have 2 light scout drones ). And as far as the setups go, I do know how to fit a caracal for PvP, but I wasn't PvPing when the guy jumped me. Just bad timing for me is all.
Finally: to the guy who said my points contradict each other: They're 2 seperate entities. If I'm PvEing, obviously I have no reason to fit WCS, unless I'm going to do level 4 missions, but I don't have the skills for that. If I'm PvPing, I will not fit a WCS on my ship. ___________________________ |

Since most of the pvp in eve is blobbing, you will die alot unless you fit wcs to the ship. Its not like that extra low slot will give you the win if you dont. --- The Eve Wiki Project |

You did well. Like most of the posters here, I agree that you could have fired your missiles off at the target when he engaged his MWD, you could have returned the single targetted drone and a webber/painter would have been useful. Main thing is you didn't panic and freeze. Your philosophy is good too: you walked away intact and no ship loss and no smack either.
Well done.
Now get yourself into a t1 frigate and go find some....

First I would have to say is even though your corp says never 1 v 1 or if you dont stand a chance don't do it is wrong. Just like everyone thinks cause some guys has played 2 months longer he can win the fight. It is all stupid. Ferox is also nothing to be scared of. Wow someone has a ferox now lets go kill it. Plain and simple. Setup and tactics is most important. Team work if you have it. Now don't get me wrong I love a challenge even one I know I can not win. I go after cruiser, battle cruiser, even battle ships in my punisher. I have yet to have a battle ship fight back but i have killed quite a few cruisers and some battle cruisers in it. The whole cause it is bigger never works. Sorry hate to say it. Stand your damn ground, loose a ship if need be to learn. That is best you can do.
