Commissar Kate wrote:Sigh... while I would like to use something like that compatibility issues and directx says no. I'm not too fond of Ubuntu's Unity desktop so I put LinuxMint on a different non gaming machine and it works very well. And I'm used to Windows 8.1 now. The only gripes I really have is that the charms bar on the right comes up while in desktop mode when you swipe from the clock and up. The metro/touch based control panel and apps are horrible but its not like I even use them. The built in virtual drive and native ISO support is great. Storage Spaces is awesome too. If I could disable every hint of touch based UI I would be very happy with Windows 8. The new start screen does not bother me. IMO the Windows 7 one was really a mess with few customization options compared to the new one.
Yeah there is Mint for the Windows-like option, has gotten very popular. I find Ubuntu's Unity ok, but then I used to use widowmaker quite a bit which is seriously minimalistic, as well as Blackbox. Then there is always the option of installing Enlightenment from the Ubuntu software directory. That has the menu driven file system and all the bells and whistles for the environment. And can always just use Gnome, it's up there too. (edit note: installing apps and such is much like using google play store with an android)
Two points though, it won't have the security issues that XP will, and it'll run EVE... depending on the power of the system considering it's old enough to be running XP. I hear it's a little slower, but I haven't tried yet. So really a system like that, there isn't much you can do with it anyway as far as current games, so Linux should be fine... and secure. But if you can still run games, you can get the Steam app and install games like Portal2 or X3 among many others that have native releases for Linux. Even some android games showing up, well considering android is linux. Unleash the penguin inside.
I skipped Win8, waiting on 9. The whole metro thing was a deal breaker. I know they have cleaned it up some, but too late to start on it now. By the time 9 is out I may be ready for a new desktop anyway, but not yet. |
