I have a similar question, or questions. I know that "every hour lotteries are run in selected fields" - but which fields? How are they selected? And is there just one BPO per field per hour? - or one of each relevant type in the field? or more? My other question is about the total number of RPs in the lottery at any given time (per field). Is there any way to find this out, or does anyone know even an approximate number? Does a single RP have a one in a million chance of winning? Or one in ten million? Or what?

Man, I wish. It's a lot less than that, there's a set number of t2 BPOs in the game for a certain mod at any point in time. I don't know the specific numbers, but for some reason I remember 20 as the number of BPOs for a ship, 40 for ammo... Something like that. Point is, not a lot.

that and some of the BPOs are basicaly worthless so they get pushed back into the system because people do NOT want to sacrifice their accumulated RPs on crap.

New BPOs are released slowly into the system--for example, some T2 ammo BPOs are still being released.

OK, well a Tremor BPO would do me nicely. Does anyone know the answer to my other question - (very roughly) how many RPs are there competing in each lottery?

Depends on research field. Starship engineering has hundreds of millions, other, not so popular, fields can have as little as tens to hundreds of thousands.
Edit: typos for teh lose.
----- Sable's Ammo Shop at Alentene 5, Moon 4, Duvolle Laboratories Factory. Ammo at affordable prices. |

There are only more research points in Starship Design because there is a skill point modifier of x3 I believe.
Because everyone gets the same modifier it doesn't change anything. Instead of you now having 1 RP out of 100 in the whole game you instead have 3 RP out of 300. The ratio doesn't change.
The chance of getting a BPO these days is also much lower given the number of players in the game increasing along with the number of players who have realised the value of RPs and who have started to use them. As such the RP pools are much larger collectively and the number of points a person has, even a large individual number, is now relatively smaller.
Best you can do is:
Train skills so you can use 6 agents
Develop as high a standing with the corporation you work for - this increases your daily RP's
Devote all your research to one field
Train the required skill for that field to Lvl V - this increases your daily RP's
The point of specialising your research is based on the presumption that a corporation gives out BPOs. If this is true then you will have the largest combined pool you can will give you the greatest change of a BPO win. If BPOs are dished out by individual agents then having the 6 best agents in the game may be better.
Other points to consider are which corporations are used the most? If Ishukone is run by players the most for their R&D agents then the total pool will be much higher in relation to your number of RPs. If thats true then find a corporation no one uses. If you were the only player to use R&D agents of one corp you would always receive their BPOs!! Finding this out is hard though.
If you are really anal do the missions they ask for when they ask. This gives RP boosts for each completed. I don't bother as my agents are spread all over the place and I don't have the time.
At the end of the day, your chance of a BPO is small, very small, and as such I wouldn't wait for it to turn up. Get your agents going and then forget about them. If anything does get offered congratulations.
