The one thing that will keep me from continuing in this game is the downtime - planned and unplanned. No other game I've playing goes down as much as EVE. Maybe the sinle server concept really DOESN'T work!!

Are you nuts? Have you ever played an MMORPG before?
World of Warcraft has downtimes all the time and day-long crashes every other week.
EVE is only slightly unreliable this month because of the hardware upgrades, which obviously aren't going to go perfectly smoothly.
EVE crashes on average once every 2-3 weeks for 20 minutes. That's more reliable than any other MMORPG I've ever seen.

I've played EQ, DAoC, SWG, EQ2, WoW, Linage 2, RF Online and EVE, and the one thing they all share in common is unscheduled downtime and that they are mmo's.
The two things they share in common are unscheduled downtime, that they are all mmo's and they run on computer systems 1000x more complicated that our home PC's.
The three things they have in common is..............
I expect downtime and I don't doubt for a second that CCP are always doing their best just like SOE, Blizzard etc do when their servers go down.
I'm not saying I'm overly happy when the server crashes but I try and understand and then go do something else that doesn't involve my PC.
Oh and from reading the first line I realise I have spent far too much time in the last 5 years at my PC.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out....
As far as I am concerned, EVE is stable and has decent patch days.

I think you may have joined at a bad time for patches. It is usually flakey around patch time, then you can expect a couple of months of solid reliability before the next patch.

To the OP, if you are crashing more often then when they have upgrades, they you may need to look at your pc, your net connection and so on.
I had some connection issues a few months back, but after a clean format/reinstall of windows, it was rock solid. I crash now only when they are doing upgrades.
It also could be your internet connection. You'd have to contact CCP's techs to have them walk you through some line checks.
I've noticed that if you crash, and noone else does, 9/10 times its either your connection to the server, or your PC. If a bunch of others crashed, then it's server related.

We've had a little more downtime than normal over the last few days but unlike most other MMO's at least CCP actually give you a reason WHY and are also pretty good with estimates as to when the server will go back up.

The only MMO that I've been unhappy with downtime was UO, and that was in their early days so that too can be forgiven. EVE has been exemplary for me. My money stays with them.
If DT is the only reason you're not playing this game, then you're making a mistake judging them on the past week. But to each his own I guess.

One or two little crashes, quickly sorted out and you act as if you have empirical evidence that EvE has 20x more DT than anyother games

I can pod your arguement with three letters.

I must be lucky.
I haven't experienced any downtime since the DB update.

To the players with helpful comments, thank you. To the rest, well there are more than enough of you in EVERY mmorpg. Enough on this subject.

No kidding. SWG and Upgrade means 30 hours downtime. Then another 2 weeks of up down rollback and then months of super lagg with them telling you the lagg is your fault not theres.
CCP is Ok in my book. Yeah lost a few ships due to lag or something. But have yet to have a real issue with them. Atleast they Communicate.
OP has no clue of what Bad service is.

We've had 3 major changes in the last few months. The hardware upgrade, the Blood patch and now the new DB upgrade. Yes it has been worse recently than in the past but it's not common fro that many changes to take place in such a short time. Certainly we are not going to see another server upgrade for a very long time.
Patches are common for most MMO's and I think everyone will agree that patchday commonly takes far less time on Eve than other MMO's. There are a few days of instability after that but again, far less than other MMO's before it's stabilised. This is due to having one server. When somehting catastrauphic happens, the whole team is on it instead of half the team on a different server.
On the whole, CCP do a very good job of keeping this server running. If you don't believe us, go play WOW or EQ and count the number of days downtime you have there for a comparison.
Just remember how much CCP have added to Eve in the last 4 months before you start accusing them of being lax.

Dont know what your talking and i dont think you do either. More than enough of who? We have enough whiners like you in the game if thats what you mean. And the fact that you have only been in game for a month means you know nothing about this game however i have been here for 2 years and having played many mmos in my opinion is one of the most reliable games out there

I think he meant CTD's not server downtime.
And yes, in some configurations teh Eve client does cause it's fair share of CTD's that other programs seem to not cause. So that's a fair point.
For me it;s no biggie tho, get maybe one every few days.

So you admit, it's about the connection! See, the server is up more often than you think, it's not anyone else's fault if you can't access it.
WoW and SWG are two MMO's I've played that go down far more often than EVE ever has. Care to tell me why you need 24/7 access to a game anyhow? - - - - - "Never offend people with style when you can offend them with substance." - Sam Brown |
