I don't run missions, but from what I understand, with the right setup you can AFK a number of them.
You can't AFK pvp.
Artificial intelligence will never match player intelligence (or player stupidity). On that basis alone, missions don't prepare you for pvp. . -á<- Argue this, not this ->-á( -í-¦ -£-û -í-¦) |

PVP prepares you for PVP. But isnt that like saying "dont go in the water until you learn how to swim?" No. Go into the water without knowing how to swim, and if you drown you will be cloned and wake up in a new body. Then you keep going back in the water until you stop drowning so often. Will security missions teach you to fight other players? No, not unless other players scan you down and attack you in your mission.
Will security missions prepare you for PvP combat? That's a question that has something of a broader scope than you might think.
Missions can be used to test-drive a new ship or fit before taking it into real combat. Missions can introduce you to concepts such as transverse velocity, webifying, sensor jamming, warp scrambling, target painting, etc, etc. They can show you how bad large weapons and ships work against small targets, even when said targets are flying straight at you. Missions also provide a nice stream of ISK to fund the ubiquitous 'cheap frig' that everyone keeps telling you to fly into PVP.
There's no replacement for actual experience, of course. But that doesn't mean that you can't use missions to help you prepare if you look at it in the right way.

Missions can prepare you for pvp in only one way: ISK
Running a couple of hours of level 4s should give you enough ISK to buy and fit a reasonable number of throwaway T1 frigs.
Buy them
Fit Them
Lose Them
It is the only way to get better at pvp. When you are happy with frigates then MAYBE move up a class. Frigates are godawesome fun though. Especially in faction warfare. If you've never tried PvP in EvE it's quite possible you've missed out on one of the greatest rushes available in modern gaming. |

Watch tutorial videos, read a few blogs and ask people about the details. Then try and die over and over, and after every defeat think what you have done wrong. After one miserable week of endless frustration, you'll start to get kills.
Pvp is the best aspect of Eve - it's not just about shooting down ships, it's equally about being a part of unique stories and moments. So, start to learn now.
PS: Btw most important thing about pvp is range control. |

I'm a relatively experienced PVE-er and rookie PVP-er.
PVE teaches you to fit specific resists on your ship. To favor range over damage. To reduce your sig radius when flying cruiser and larger hulls. To be cap stable. That tank overrules damage. To orbit your targets or keep at range
Meanwhile, in PVP Omnitank and buffer tanking (armor plates or shield extenders) go a longer way than specific damage resists, because you can't really predict what you'll be hit with Damage over range in most cases You usually already have a huge sig radius already because of the tanking, so a MWD is more useful on a cruiser to get within optimal You won't be using passive cap rechargers because a fight is usually over quickly, so cap stability is not required, you'll be probably using cap injectors for short bursts You'll want to kill your enemy faster, rather than chip at him slowly while tanking his shots (because the danger of reinforcements is ever-looming) Always manual pilot. And learn to exploit those using Orbit and Keep at Range.
And of course, I may be 100% wrong on all of these accounts which only serves to prove that PVE does nothing to prepare you for PVP
EDIT: Also Iterons can solo Megathrons
So I guess hauling prepares you for PVP I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

Lots of PVP corps train their pilots. If you do pvp a lot and think about fights afterwards so you can do better next time you will get better at it. Same as anything in eve. Research, ask, try, learn, adapt, win. Start with cheap frigates lose a ton, alter the fits, alter the ships you take on, alter your orbit /manual flying /keep at range to increase you win chances. It is nothing like missions. Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85 |

What this guy said. Go fly an affordable ship with t1 fit and buy a load of replacements ready to jump into when you die and go have fun somewhere. Learn as you go. Be respectful to your opponents and they might even help give you tips on how to improve. |

Grinding missions helps finance my PVP, in part, because the standings help my industrialist make more money. Grinding missions does not do very much to teach you about PVP combat, except maybe the basics. Getting around some of the ewar resistances in some missions is interesting, though..

I just had this experience. I have an alt with 2M SP that I put into a blaster Brutix using a specific PVP fit. It's a DPS beast! But in a level 4 mission the tank just does not stand up to the BS-sized NPCs. There's simply not enough space to fit enough cap injectors to maintain presence. (and of course the damned rats had nuets).
I've known for years that a PVP fit does not work in a level 4 mission, but at 80 million SP I can make a lot of things work. The less SP one has, the more critical the relation between the present skills and the fitting. I have not had to tank against a specific damage type since 2010.

Grinding missions? It prepares you to refine better or whatever activities is tied to standings these days. I do missions when I'm so hung over I'd embarras myself in an actual fleet. If you must combine PVE with PVP, rat lowsec in a PVP fit or whatever. You eventually get sec tags or a fight out of it. |

No, it's literally saying "sink or swim". And it's true, even I made my first ever PVP-kill after losing an unbelievable amount of ships. (Because I'm lazy and stupid. I'm pretty sure the average player learns a lot faster and less costly.) |

doing it ... no
it gives you the isk pool required to go out and lose a bunch of ships
luckily for you most of the SP transfers over without any hassle you'll just want a quick bit of training in propulsion jamming
missions do not teach you the tactics or methods used in pvp fraid you have to learn that stuff the hard way, by getting blown up lots by other players

If you just grind missions for ISK, you will never learn anything.
If you purposely try to use missions as a learning tool, then you may learn something from them.
Example: When I did some level 2 and level 3 missions in various destroyers, I learned a lot about the limitations of the ships vs. a superior opponent. I learned a lot about overheating modules too, and that some modules are a lot more durable than one would expect, and others are very fragile. I learned that missiles are a huge PITA for a small ship, even when they don't hit for full damage. I learned that by far, energy drains and webs were the scariest things for a small ship to face. etc. |
