I read many posts about the need to balance out ships within a class, and I must ask "Why?". I think it's much more fun to have ships that are clearly superior and inferior within a class. If you are a player who stays within their race, it does present some shortcomings, but none are insurmountable. If you have the weakest of the Destroyers, for example, DON'T fly destroyers! If you choose to fly a weaker ship, build your skills and fit the ship to it and your strong points. I believe that we lend much more variety to the game this way. Who wants everyone in their corp flying "BlasterThrons"? I fly Minmatar ships...many are considered to be inferior, but I feel the Min Destroyer is a very capable ship. I have built my skills to minimize the weakpoints and to take advantage of it's strongpoints, and I think I have an extremely capable anti-frigate boat...I can even go up against PvE cruisers with some hope of succes...as long as I fly my ship to it's strengths. I have a corp-mate who flies a Typhoon...many consider it to be the weakest of the BBs, but he thoroughly enjoys taking it out with it's Malkuth Assault-missile launchers and it's T2 AutoCannon and doing l3 missions solo, l4 missions with a few support ships along for the fun and payout. So back to my question, why should all the ships within a class be balanced? Even looking at this from a RPG point-of-view, some ships are older designs, and would logically be overshadowed by newer designs. I can spend 55 million ISK for an "old" Typhoon and live with it's shortcomings...even be happy with it. If I want better, I'll pay the 110 million ISK for a Tempest...not whine about adding more 'bonuses' to the Typhoon.
So I say again, Why do all ships need to be balanced?

There has to be some type of balance between the same class of ships (i.e tier 2 bs vs. tier 2 bs) else everyone will just fly one type of BS if it is stupidly overpowered (the entire caldari race, pre-exodus for example).
There has to be a balance otherwise parts of the game/items become obsolete.

Ships need to be balanced in order to promote diversity. If a ship is clearly overpowered compared to others in it's class few people will handicap themselves by flying somthing weaker. If that were to happen why bother having the other ships in the game?
Balance does not mean all ships have to be the same. Some ships do better in certain situations than others and some suit peoples flying styles better, however each and every ship should have it's niche.

how fun would it be if every BS pilot flew the same ship?

I think you each have some good counter-arguments...I must be of the minority that 1)flies ships of my race only, and 2)enjoys taking said ships and building them to their strengths. I do have the advantage however that I fly in med-sec and hi-sec and mainly do missions and industry. I am therefore naive about low-sec ship-fitting and PvP ship-fitting.

Hageken was a great mini simulation of that, until they moved the agents.
Could not get out of the station for the huge line of Ravens sitting outside it.
