Edited by: Gracies Wrath on 15/05/2006 00:35:56 I switched from flying Minnie ships to Amarr once I realized that Crystals can swap out as the badguys close on your ship and you can wipe them out as they walk deeper into your web of death. And when I went looking at ship setups, I saw everyone suggesting to use PULSE vs. BEAM. WHY? I'm not sure I understand the mathematics or the thoughts behind this, but don't beams dish out more death? Or is it all about the tracking involved? My prophecy floats with 4 Beams and 2 pulse due to cap needs, otherwise I'd have all beams on that bird. Can someone explain to this 1 year old why everyone likes pulse so much? Thanks! ----------------------------------- F em all but 9 6 to carry my casket, 2 for roadguards and 1 to call cadence. |

Some people will argue that the time needed to get into range with pulses makes them worse than beams, but pulses also have better tracking and rate of fire. If you have a tackler and can afford to stay away from the enemy, then beams can work. But if you're working alone, someone with a close-range setup will ride right up to you and your beams will no longer hit due to tracking issues (i.e. a blaster Taranis who knows what he's doing could slowly wear you down and kill you). Therefore I would use pulse solo for PvP. Beams are superior for missions when you can keep effectively your distance from the NPCs (if not use pulses, although NPCs who like to run away will then become an issue).
And last thing: NEVER use both beams and pulses on the same ship. It's like fitting artillery and autocannons together on the same ship, and will nerf your DPS.

pulse are shorter range and do more dmg do to better rate of fire beams are long range and do less dmg
example heavy pulse 1 3x dmg mod 5.25 rate of fire 10km optimal
heavy beam 1 3xdmg mod rate of fire 6secs 20km

Pulse do more damage over time, have a faster rof, track better and use less cap and grid. Beams do more damage and have a much higher range. But because of their rof pulses do more damage in the long run. Also beams can be a ***** to fit on some ships. Take a prophecy and try to outfit it with 6 heavy beam 2's. You can do it but you'll have to gimp your setup to do it. Now 6 heavy pulse 2's? Easy as pie. Only time I use beams is if I'm going a sniperring!

I fly a prophecy with 4 heavy beams (the expensive ones) and 2 pulses... and I like the damage I deal with the beams... and with a webber on there, I can slow down the damn frigates enough to tear them apart with my drones and assault missile launcher... and since the prophecy is so slow... its inevitable that rats are gonna get up close and personal on you. but the Beams just tear them apart!
however I just got my hands on a Sacrilege and love having the heavies to toss around at the long rangers... and oh the RANGE I can get on that bastard. ----------------------------------- F em all but 9 6 to carry my casket, 2 for roadguards and 1 to call cadence. |

Ehm, if you're using a webber to slow down your enemies enough to kill them with beams, that means they're in web range so they're in pulse range = beams are useless

I disagree partially. Beams work fine for me down there close for the most part... but I have mostly 4's and 5's in my skills to get my guns on target. ----------------------------------- F em all but 9 6 to carry my casket, 2 for roadguards and 1 to call cadence. |

my point was tho that if you're fighting up close pulse are more efficient whatsoever

They are both good. Generally though on smaller then BS ships most perfer pulse. I find Heavy Beam IIs on a zealot quite effective however.
If your NPC'ing, it really depends on your style. If you warp in 15km all the time you might as well go pulse. If your like to warp in alittle farther out and lead your targets (keep range as long as possible) so you take less damage, beams are certainly better.
If your PvP'ing, it depends on what your doing. If your raiding and planning to engage small groups at gates then pulse are usually best. If your defending space or Sniping use beam lasers.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the answers. With my slow ass Prophecy i'd warp in at whatever distances if I could, but most of the deadspace sites drop you right into the killzone <20km and I'd just slowly wade out. and I like the sound of popping hulls a lot better when they come right away, but ROF really does make a difference if you're sitting on a LOT of them really quick. Thanks again. ----------------------------------- F em all but 9 6 to carry my casket, 2 for roadguards and 1 to call cadence. |
