I have a tremendous interest in the "small but dangerous" approach to combat. For those who have flown both of these types of vessels, apart from the obvious statistical information on them (why does the Retribution only have 1 medium slot? :P) could anyone offer some insight on how these things actually work, and how well do they work, in day to day NPC/PVP combat? If it matters, I fly Amarr vessels and am nearly qualified to fly either of the two above ships.
I heard the stealth bombers were "broken." I wasn't able to quite follow up on how they were broken. If anyone has information on that, it is welcome as well.

Interceptors are generally the fast and deadly ships, they are weak in being able to take damage, but neglect that with their fast speed. Some interceptors can outdamage some AFs, but in doing so must slow down (Taranis w/ Void) Interceptors are designed to be able to hold ships down, and do decent damage.
Assault Frigates on the other hand are much slower, but can do more damage and are more versitile. Assault Frigates can also take quite a bit of damage before dying.
I prefer Interceptors as I'm quite the speed freak, but both ship classes are very fun to fly. A newer pilot will find more enjoyment in an Assault Frigate as it is more forgiving.

I see. Thank you for the reply.
Is an assault frigate far too slow to escape a given "Raven and tackler" ganking pair at a stargate? For survival purposes, I believe it boils down to whether speed, or that much more armor resistance, will buy me more time in that situation.

the only way a raven should ever be able to kill an af is with
1. Nos
2.t2 precision cruise
If you find the rare ganker without either of them, he wont be able to break your tank, iv done THIS at least 3 times
I warp in, raven 20km off gate.
I approach raven
Raven opens up, TORPS no less, no nosf
I tank all his damage easily until sentrys kill him
I loot. ---------------------------

AFs are that tough? Wow. Now I'm even more interested.
Between the two Amarr varieties, I imagine the Retribution tanks the best, even with its single, crummy medium slot. Yes?

Its not that they are that tough mate, its that they have a vey small signature radius, comparable to interceptors in most cases. The raven pilot was using torpedoes, which have a huge explosion radius, effectively gimping himself as he couldnt damage his enemy with his weaponry. AFs are tough, but in a raven + tackler situation, an AF could probably last long enough to kill off the tackler and get away before he died, depending on the tackler. All in all, i would suggest the AF over interceptor even though I prefer inties.

Will a Taranis will be able to hit with blasters orbiting at 500m with MWD turned off? Or does it need special micromanagement to keep it going slow enough to hit?

If the raven flew with small launchers you'd be toast. And I often fly with small weapons just because I lack the skills to use bigger ones effectively. I group with my corp mates and they are like, o shi lots of frigates, but then I pop them faster than I can target them almost, and they are like wow.

Assault frigates are really handy, can do level 2 and 3 missions, and do 0.0 rat spawns fairly easily.
Then again, you can get the same results out of a Thorax with decent skills.

Retribution is awesome, I tanked three battleships (one on gate, two sniping) long enough in a retribution to travel 15Km to the gate with only an AB.
I only fly with MWDs on my AFs and Interceptors now, but that's a matter of preference. Thing with interceptors though, is that with a skilled pilot if you're webbed, nossed, and scrambled you can break off easily, quite different with an AF.

In PvE its far and away the AF, inty can hardly take 3 rats without repping like mad. AF can happily fly around with 5 BS and 10 cruisers having a go. Both die horribly if you get webbed though, although inties have a bit more room in that department as they might need double webbing to get down to hitting speed.

I've tried both an Ares and a Ishkur...
for situations where I actually have to fight, I'd rather have the Ishkur I think. while the interceptor speed is awsome... the time or two I've done NPC'ing in it... while barely being hit at all, it FELT like any moment something would actually hit and blow it to ****. it felt like I was flying a box of tissue paper, chipping away at the target.
where the ishkur, I feel like I'm flying something tough as nails, (for its size and speed) that could actually take a few hits before being vaporized... not to mention doing what FELT like real damage. (5 light drones or 4 lights and a medium... plus 3 blasters and a NOS)
but my ares makes a fantastic T2 shuttle! named MWD, and its travel times are nearly as fast as with instas, and aligns nearly instantly, its fantastic in that respect.

AFs are extremely tough little beasts. However, as long as the current precision missiles are as they are, I recommend not flying them in pvp. They will die fast, you probably won't even have time to activate repair modules.
After the upcoming precision missile nerf, things will probably be back to normal.

For PvP Inty's are the more effective of the two. They dont have a great tank like the AF but the damage they avoid because of their speed more than makes up for it. Alot of people would recomend an AF for PVE but im yet to find a lvl 3 mission my taranis couldnt handle.

Assault frigate = PvE
Interceptor = PvP
Yes you can PvP in an assault frigate, but there is no reason to. A cruiser can do almost everything better and is cheaper. Or if you just want mobile firepower in a gang, bring a destroyer.
Assault frigs don't tank all that well either, they will lose to competent cruiser pilots 90% of the time.

I have a question, whaat would be the better choice to go with, with relatively low skills? Im aiming for Gallnte Taranis(Inty) or Gallente Ishkur(AF). Atm i have all the requirements to fly an AF, except i still have Mechanics IV and Assault Ships 0. I do however also have Evasive Maneuvring III and Interceptors 0 wich puts me further away from the Interceptor. I dont really know what to go for first... Im planning to PvP in those ships, and maybe some 0.0 belt ratting in Ishkur. Any suggestions? Or should i go for something else, like the Enyo instead?

(barring t2 precision cruise missiles flying at you)
the ishkur is a very good pvp and pve frig, but it requires decent drone skills to be good(DI3+, t2 lights/mediums), it also has the 4(3)/3/3 layout that allows it to be so versitile BUT with the borked arse drone AI, your basicly screwed if you have to warp out in a hurry
the enyo npc's well and is good in pvp gangs, it packs a decent alpha strike, but lacks the mids to be a good tackler(either web/scram and ab/mwd, or web and scram but no ab/mwd)
I can't comment to much on the ranis, can fly it, but I suck as a ceptor pilot ------- ugg I broke my mod'd sig

So basically it would be good to stick with Enyo untill i get my Drone (Ishkur) and cap (Ranis) skills up to a better level, and move on to them? Or would it still be enough to go with an Ishkur first, with t1 meds and lights and Drone Int II ?
