I think the current ratio of residents/regions is just fine. You still have loads of empty systems, and population of more interesting station systems often does not exceed 10-20 people. Only alliance capitals in 0.0 have much higher local numbers.
The drawbacks of more regions are longer travelling times, less player interaction, lower risk, less vulnerability to attackers.
And to be honest, I dont see advantages. Ok we got more ore, npcs, and complexes - but that isnt a value per se. You can always increase spawning times of all these things in existing systems - and in a competitive game like EvE, having to fight for and gaining control of limited resources is much more interesting.
I can only see these changes as a good thing if, at the same time, it is much easier to kill locals once raiding parties have entered the system - for example by delaying appearance in local, greatly increasing warp entry times, nerfing stabs etc.

Its a way i guess of helping with lag you see each system is run by a maximum of one cpu so spreading people out more by adding more syatems can help.
Also it makes eve seem bigger. ----------------------------------------------- YYAARRHH HAHAHA IM THE HAPPY PIRATE

Is this a sneak campaign for the change of local / wcs under the guise of "new regions being introduced"?

Well, there are currently 32 entities claiming current 0.0 territories and ~60 alliances in total. Also the userbase has grown a lot in last 9 months (I think it tripled or something like that) which means there is demand for more space. From dev point of view I believe that having people spread across even more systems remove the stress from market hubs like Oursulaert, Jita and Amarr Empire and in general generate more fancy stuff for markets for everyone to wonder and gaze.
Other possibility is of course that they're expecting a gazillion new subscribers in next few months and/or this is just one of those things that reflects from Serenity. ________________________________________________ My signature exploded :/ |

I like the idea of new regions, especially since they will have no stations... This will require alliance to haul new stations all the freaking way up there -----

We may find that, when those new regions open up, a few conquerable stations may be discovered in them. OTOH it's a chance for CCP to have regions created completely by player agency. ________________________________________________

I cannot see how this will really help removing stress from hubs. If you want to sell stuff you will have to go to empire, and hubs are crucial to this, regardless of whether empire is 60 jor 15 jumps away.
And no this is not a "sneak" campaign. The point is that I want more player interaction - that is raiders ganker npcers/miners, and vice versa defenders ganking raiders. With all the game mechanics that favour evasion of combat, this is already a big problem. Reducing 0.0 population density will only aggravate this situation.
No stations is a nice thing to have - however, I would much rather see a change to existing non-conquerable stations, to set an end to ultra-lame docking strategies in 0.0.

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 19/05/2006 14:38:00 At one time the systems closest to GW had security ratings, these were taken away well over a year ago at least, possibly two. Probably an idea about a 'pirate' faction that didn't materialize, remember those guys in the corporate tools?
Hopefully there will be no more conquerable stations nubbling the regions down, in fact I hope the devs see the error of their crutches and let the conquerables slide into oblivion.
Again gotta love it when these longnamed fellas post, makes me look better in the forums, broaden the character field to allow for the look this page has now please.

Unless they plan on fixing current 0.0 wastelands, we need more space.
If you have ever played in 0.0, you'd know that 90% of 0.0 systems are empty because they are useless. This is because...
1. Their true sec status sucks, in that they have no better ore than low sec empire, and only marginally better rats than low sec empire. Only about 10% of the systems in each region has low enough true sec status to have constant BS rat spawns, crokite, bistot and higher ores.
2. They are not a major chokepoint/travel route system
3. There is no station anywhere close to them, so due to lack of infrastructure (and reason 1), there is no reason to visit them. Ever.
Sad fact is that the systems that have _substantially_ better ore and rats than your average 0.5-0.4 empire sys are VERY few and far apart. Among the regions that I've looked thru, all have only a handful of systems with true sec status of less than -0.7. Crokite appears only below -0.65 or thereabouts, and you get rid of crappy cruiser rat spawns only around -0.8 or less.
So, as shocking as it may sound to you, people in 0.0 are either in a system that has a station (infrastructure, safety, market), or in a system that has worthwhile rats/ore (true sec -0.7 or lower, very few exist), or camping a pipe system hoping to nab noobs and other soft targets as a wannabe pirates.
And, lookie, 90%+ of 0.0 is unused.
Terrible waste of space in my books, but that's how the game works at the moment. I wouldn't mind if devs would fix that. Or the fact that low sec empire in general is utterly worthless, because the 'mid rare' ores (above crokite) are only marginally better isk/hour than wiping out omber spawns in safe systems. The risk/reward is out of whack, until we get to deep 0.0, alliance-secured space, and crokite, bistot, araknor etc.

I think it's to encourage a larger userbase into 0.0, in time for true factional warfare and other 0.0 fun.
If you think that at the moment, it's almost impossible for an empire based corp/alliance to enter 0.0, without significant military backing.
Anyway, I agree with Masu'di; having a small cluster of 0.4+ systems right in the east or near Jove (call the system Smoske). Give it some SoE/CONCORD backstory.
As I posted in Corp+Alliance, the real test is going to be around Aug/Sep, when people realise they are going to hsve to fight through the 3 or so alliances currently in the South East, in order to get to the tasty pie.

Do they really expect to hold on to it for very long though, with no significant military backing?

Making useless systems more attractive seems to make much more sense - systems should be more unique by adding special stuff like for the new mini-professions, tactical environments, or the cosmos constellations.
I dont want to sound too negative, but in my opinions this is just another "candy" addition that doesnt really add to gameplay (or the contrary), and ignores fixing existing problems (like useless systems).

Would it help if when these new regions came into being the GMs offered to transport n00bs out of empire space and to a lower sec region with all their stuff?
I know the reason a lot of people don't relocate into low sec now is that they missed the early boat and don't want to get ganked taking all their shiny stuff down there.
Why not circumvent this and have an event tied to the release of new regions where an NPC had a jump gate in X system and was offering to jump you to a system of choice?
We/CCP want more people in low sec, lots of people are afraid to go, not because they wouldn't be able to survive (heck everyone can join a corp/alliance) but for fear that all this precious stuff they have in empire would have to be left behind or sold off.

It could be a move on CCP's part to plan ahead. This way the playerbase has a way to grow in to the new regions, instead of flooding them later.

New players wont get affected much by these though. The oldtimers (alliances & corporations currently in 0.0) will have something new to fight over for a while, but most us the newbies are still hanging around in empire. By the time the newbies get oldtimers themselfs, these system will be occupied by current oldtimers. --- The Eve Wiki Project |

With Npc stations basicly 12 jumps of anywhere, theres very little reason to build an Outpost. Hopefully with the new regions youll find true isolated, self sustaining colonies (well, if trade goods are ever player made), encouraging alliances to build reprocessing outposts and factory outposts etc, not just bilding 1 outpost to fill their areas missing service. This system is going to be much harder then just taking a freighter to a conq station, and building an outpost within a few jumps, and im sure alot more satisifying for players looking for greater challanges.

I don't see why people keep saying CCP wants you to leave empire.
All you have to do is pay 50 mil an shazam! Empire becomes 0.0 space! =D
And I don't see how adding new regions will hurt the game either. We already have a lot of systems people don't use in 0.0 and in Empire. Look at Lonetrek region. That region blows. ---

The obvious reason for doing this is that it allows for, for example, eight new mid-sized alliances to move into 0.0 without having to displace anybody. Yes, there's lots of dead space atm, but it's claimed dead space. If you assume (it's a reasonably large assumption) that most 0.0 alliances currently claim as much space as they feel they can hold, then they're not likely to move into the new areas, or at least if they do they'll be making themselves significantly weaker in the process, which leaves it open for other groups to take over and spread around a bit. It might even help resolve the gigantic cluster*bleep* that seems to be going on in the south right now :P
TBH I think the single biggest problem with this change is that Mr Foiritain is going to have to move the "war listing" box on the alliance map to the top-right corner.

You don't travel much do you? You were in Venal once right? NPC region.
My alliance has built 10 outposts and the nearest NPC stations are in Stain, around 40 jumps from some of our systems.
