Nope.
My first characters were amongst the first "generation" of pilots in the game, and charity was usually voiced in the familiar phrase of: "Get out and mine."
Which was substantially different in those days, nowhere near a lucrative with the effects of boosting and fleet bonuses, much less the vast assortment of crystals, mods and implants we have today.
Kids have it easy these days.

God, reading all of your replies reminds me what an IDIOT I am.
Although I've declined all financial help, gifts etc., I've gotten tons and tons and TONS of advice from seasoned vets since I started. Do you know many months it took me to get 100 mil in my wallet?
It's a trick question. In the four months I've played, I've never made it there.
Granted, I had more than that in assets I never got around to selling (200m or so in assets in the first week? 300m or so by the second week) but I was never, ever, ever able to make it to even 100 mil. I lose a ship on a daily basis and have 100+ losses to less than 30 kills.
Is that abnormally bad?
Wait. Don't answer that. I know the answer.
I don't even know why I'm posting here. I guess it feels good to get it off my chest.

Absolutely and considering we run the most successful newbee program in the game I'm going to say its essential. Grinding is terrible, I'd say more about it but the forum filters will prevent it. These 'handouts' or whatever demonizing term you want to use for assistance alleviate the grinding which makes the game more fun and provide a little starting framework for the social aspect of the game which is arguably the most fun part of it. You begin as a wide-eyed newbee who has no idea what's going on, is handed a bunch of ships and a lump of isk then told to go lead a bunch of your drunken comrades on a suicidal roam of enemy space. Its terrifying because you have no idea what's going or how to do anything but, you have a bunch of your soon to be friends in the back ground being reassuring and enjoying themselves so its okay that you just suicided 50 frigates into an enemy munin gang, you managed to kill two of them which is hilarious no matter which way you want to phrase it. You continue learning and progressing from that state until you are in the position of handing out free stuff to newbees, joining in their fleets and enjoying their fleets. Its a cycle that is lacking in other corporations/areas especially highsec. You could solve the highsec half of that by nerfing highsec but, the corporation half is a much harder issue to solve.
All I ever see in the highsec corporations I awox are absentee leadership or outright scorn for low SP players which makes me stay in your corporation all the longer just to twist the knife a bit more. Instead of encouraging their newbies to do anything worthwhile they do nothing to assist or foster an environment of hostility against them. Being unwelcoming for newbies has been historically shown to be a be a bad thing for the most recent example look at the failings exhibited by BRAVE once they decided to start focusing on nullsec more than newbies. Worse can happen as well, they could remain in NPC corporations and be exposed to the horrid filth inhabiting those channels then become incredibly risk averse. The bottom line is that treating your newbies well is part of being successful and having an enjoyable EVE experience. This post was loving crafted by a member of the Official GoonWaffe recruitment team. Proof Highsec reward needs to be nerfed: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqC-BTui2uSGdDlxa2dWOG5ieHB0QXBVWW82bGN5TFE&usp=sharing |

I used an invite from a friend and he split the sale of the plex he got when I joined up - also got a ton of skill books from him... A guy in his corp fronted me 4 merlins my first week in FW, and one guy gave me 30 mil because he felt bad for podding me in my second week.. aside from that I'm trying to get established in gas mining for boosters.
I am a vet of the old 10/Six which was far more barbaric in their open world PvP then I have seen here thus far, so it's been a good experience thus far. |

A pirate once gave me 10 million ISK. Apart from that I had little help... except the collegues at work that were involved in high-end wormhole Alliances, who gave me very solid advice and explained a lot of mechanics to me.
Funny how I always 100% agree or disagree with Nariz's posts. In this case he is 100% right. Making ISK is not progression, and grind is the worst way to obtain currency. Sharing ISK is a small token of appreciation, sharing knowledge and experiences is what's truly important. By fending for yourself you get a good idea of the true value of ISK, but there's no reason to deny a little handout to get you into a PVP ship quicker. You may not get wiser about the economy but you certainly aren't getting any dumber, plus you might get valuable social & PVP experiences... far more important! |

When I was asked to try out EvE, I was told that it would be great if I could keep the rats off of them while they mine...I thought I was going to be in a cave wearing a headlamp, holding a shot gun clearing the area of over sized rats...
Well, yeah, I got sucked into a "Ghost" corp of some big alliance at the time and learned a bunch from peeps coming back from where ever to take a break or Jew some. I learned very quickly about the politics, trust issues, and how to deal with loss of "stuff", how to not fit out ships (although sometimes I face planted a few, and they let me know how terrible I was) and introduced me to some very savvy and otherwise widely hated patrons of EvE. (These folk were / are the most knowledge able, and entertaining)
That was worth more to me than any monetary or material gifts I could have received. |
