Just curious, since quite a few people in the galaxy have tried many of the other mmorpgs out there I'd like to hear your take on them, the pros and cons.
And please don't turn this into eve-flaming making silly comparisons. That's not what it's about and it'd be a shame if the thread gets taken away. Just trying to benefit from the undoubtedly large knowledgebase in the community. So have a glass of spiced wine, some long limbed roes, and tell me your story if you please.

Das Schwarze Auge (Pen & Paper) Cyberpunk (Pen & Paper) Shadowrun (Pen & Paper) Rolemaster (Pen & Paper) AD&D (Pen & Paper) Rifts (Pen & Paper)
Those were more MMORPG than the current online games are .
I played DAoC, then EVE, now back to DAoC. At least it is stable and compared to EVE 100% bugfree and I can play whenever I want to. Furthermore I do not have to deal with idiotic GMs.

Could be fun if you all could say what your main char is/was in those games too and what they do/did.
Anarchy Online, Yraxor, Soldier lvl 100 is my only other mmorpg experience. It was a lot of fun in a friendly guild called Omni-Tek Board of Directors (OTBoD).
mm...the good ol days of P&P rpg's Molly Played quite a bit of the AD&D equivalent that we got over here. It doesn't have levels like AD&D, so attributes don't go up but I lost my precious sorceror (2 years of building up?) after getting blinded and losing both arms thanks to a demon that appeard at the most unexpected time . There's a nice crypt built on a hill overlooking the ocean for that one now
There's something special about rpg's with no ressurect spells or clone facilities!

I've played RPGs before, but EVE is my first MMORPG. I have to say, even with all the problems, I enjoy it.
It's a different gaming experience for me, so perhaps I'm a little more forgiving of the flaws as I'm still learning the ropes and have nothing to compare it against. I RP'ed for the first time a few weeks back and quite enjoyed it (despite the problems I encountered...)
I'm happy just to play this out and see where it goes. I suspect I'll be playing for a while.

None of them had space ships though, so I like Eve the best =)

Edited by: Jash Illian on 22/09/2003 14:26:06 (Ultima Online) Cons: At release, UO was completely unplayable with 5 minute lag 'bursts' during which time your avatar would be killed and pillaged. During those times not susceptible to lag 'bursts', finding a training dummy that was unoccupied by macro-maniacs was virtually impossible. The cries from the 'never played any game except for the single player Ultima series' players quickly flew past pain thresholds as they ran headfirst into the 'played MUDs since 199x where killing a person because they wore a blue tunic in your presence' miner gankers.
Pros: Player generated content wise, I'm not aware of any game on the market that comes even close to competing. UO's craft and tradeskill system is the sole reason for its survival despite barely crossing the 3D barrier (I refuse to call top-down isometric graphics "3D", no matter how pretty people try to make it).
It's hard to repeat the unplayability of UO at release. But it's also hard to repeat the situation of UO at release: Truly Innovative. So Eve barely edges ahead in that category. The issues of "Good vs Evil" has yet to be resolved in Eve, so there's plenty of time for CCP to commit suicide or smarten up. Here's a hint for the developers though: Eve will never have the robust tradeskill system UO has and therefore cannot rely on its tradeskill system to save it.
Up next time: Anarchy Online, the game that killed the golden age for developers.
I mean its like you want corporations to oblige each other like its sex or something. Pffft I would rather **** my enemy.- Rohann

Well i tried everquest for a couple of days then realised i was sick of fantasy and bought Eve instead.
But i have also played D&D, Call of Cthulhu and all the Warhammer games. Call of Cthulhu was definitly the best pen and paper game but i cant roleplay any more because of work :-(.

Well seeing as i have nothing better to do as i just failed an agent mission immediately after accepting it and have to wait 15 minutes for another one i will type some shortened descriptions of what ive played...
Anarchy Online Was fun for a while, but was plagued with bugs, glitches and balance problems, all of which seemed to be getting worse every patch. My chosen proffession(nanotechnician) kept getting worse and worse with each of these patches making it harder and harder to play or even be wanted in hunting parties. What finally pushed me over the edge and caused me to quit was when i received a mission that would reward me with a very rare item worth millions at the time, upon reaching my objective i found it was behind a wall with no way of reaching it. Horrible, horrible dungeon design.
Lineage Sounded like it had a great concept with huge pvp wars consisting of 100s of people at once trying to conquer and defend territory. I was looking forward to trying this out, but getting disconnected every 10 minutes(not an exaggeration) caused me to quit before being able to experience the games main selling point.
RuneScape Im not one to usually care much about graphics, but GOD was this game ugly. Horrible lag at all times of the day, a very rude and immature community, and nothing to really keep you playing besides getting the next item caused me to stop playing.
Ragnarok Online Played it during the final week of beta. Had a great time, the gameplay was fun(despite lag at peak play times), bugs and glitches were nowhere in sight, nice coloring and cute graphics. I would have payed to play this game if it werent for the fact that the international server(the one i played on) was about 6 months behind in content and updates compared to the korean server. There was also only ONE gm to manage the entire international server. These 2 facts caused me to think twice about subscribing, and im sure glad i didnt as it turns out their servers were hacked about a week after going paytoplay and peoples personal information(including credit card numbers) was compromised.

Des,, chummer,,, I love ShadowRun
Ok, ignoring all the P&P (Mechwarrior, ShadowRun, Warhammer,,,etc..)
and ignoring all the FPS (duke, quake, CS, Tribes, MW4, SS, etc...)
and ignoring all the 3POV games (D2, MOO, HMM, MechCommander, SB, Shattered Galaxy, etc...)
I started playing MUDs and MOGs on lans/modem back in the late 80s. the first was a modified version of ShadowRun and later I ran a MechWarrior (2d sprite) MOG for several years, as for recent games, well name it and I have played it or at least looked at it (E&B yech).
Oh and the post was games, so des listing P&P was on topic. Though none has mentioned MTG that also is a game (though I stopped playing when unglued came out).

as for pnp, its mainly D&D 3rd ed, but i also do shadowrun and once enjoyed paranoia (the game that is)
I also used to play an obscene ammount of Elite on my c64 if i recall... -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Avaton White on 22/09/2003 18:06:40 -Ultima Online -Don't even remember my character's name. -Didn't realy like it. -Highs: Great tradeskill system. I liked the "ghost" system of dying and being brought back to life. -Lows: Crazy PK system that allowed people to camp town gates and slaughter n00bs as they wandered outside. Lag. 2-D graphics were very nasty.
-EverQuest -Level 25 High-Elf Wizard named Avaton. -Loved it. Played every day. -Highs: Great community at the time. Unbelievably addictive. -Lows: Bad graphics and ZONES!!! I hated waiting 2 minutes to go from one area to another.
-Anarchy Online -Level 52 Doctor named Avaton -Hated it. Microwaved the CD to make sure nobody would find it in the trash and try to use it. -Highs: Good graphics. -Lows: Everything else. Lag. The game would actually cause your ISP to HANG UP ON YOU about every 30 minutes to an hour! Hundreds of us repeatedly telling the devs this resulted in a response of "It's on your end.". Only reason I played it to level 52 was because I'm a big dumb optimist hoping they would get their act together. They never did.
-Asheron's Call 1 (still play) -Level 110 Battlemage named Avaton the White -Absolutely love it! It's the reason I stopped playing EverQuest. Best MMORPG ever made in my opinion. -Highs: Great backstory. Interesting story characters that are actually part of the game. SEASONS! Decent graphics. Good tradeskill system. Can ALT-TAB out to look things up on the net. Awesome community. Great clan system. Tons upon tons of intersting loot/monsters/areas/quests. You can literally play this game for years and not see it all. HUGE game world that you could run from one side to the other and NEVER see a zone border! -Lows: Few minor bugs that have been there forever, nothing major though. Level and skill caps.
-EVE Online -Liking it and hoping it doesn't turn into another Anarchy Online. I love that the devs listen to the players. I hate that old bugs pop back up (WTF!?). Stuck systems are getting old too. Overall though I think I'll be here a while. ------------------------------------------------ "The best defense is a dead opponent." - Avaton White

warcraft 1,2,3
starcraft
diablo 1,2
UO-played it two weeks, couldnt stand the graphics
magic the gathering online, like the actual game better
rifts, gurps, robotech, starwars, shadowrun, adnd, dnd 3rd, dragonballz, tenchi muyo, cant remember all the mass amount of books i had of other pen and paper games, but ive been playing pen and paper RP since i was 8 so thats 16 years.
also played phantasy star online liked the basis on it, hated the 56k i had to use it on.
final fantasy online kicks ass also, its gonna be a real big job balancing both ffonline and eve when it comes to computer in english, japanese version is too hard.

On-line Multiplayer Games:
Note: ignoring FPS i.e. Quake, UO, Counter-Strike etc
MUDS
For my sins .. JediMud HoloMud Razors Some Vampire/Werewolf/Mage PK character based game that I absolutely loved because it allowed me to create cute persona's called 'Dana Scully' and then PK people remorselessly. Ah, the days of dancing in the Student Union, only to hear across the dancefloor, 'DANA SCULLY! YOU W**KING MOTHERF**KER' - never failed to amuse me
MMOG's
EQ [EverQuest]:
I lurved EQ because it was the most immersive gaming experienced that I have ever encountered, up to and including EVE, period. The sheer variety of zones, sounds, sights not to mention an absolutely fantastic community - the best that I've encountered. A wonderful, diverse demographic. I do miss AyRo from time to time but it was time to move on.
Before I bought EVE, it was a choice between EVE and Second Life. In fact, I was leaning towards EVE but ValiumSummer on MMORPG.com convinced me via one of his posts to purchase EVE. I like EVE but it doesn't grab me in the same way that EQ did - which personally, is a good thing.
I've missed out on scoring with some real cuties in the past due to damn online games
The worst was missing out with [removed by poster] because by the time I had finished giving an acquaintance a throughly good beating on 'Goldeneye' (N64) after a night clubbing, I turned around and lo and behold! my 'date' had fallen asleep! There was only one thing to do .. wrap her up in a blanket and play Fifa 98
Too much information, methinks. You really didn't need to know that ..

Magestorm--The game is still running after ten years and some of the original old-timers still play.
EQ-- Played since release. I still have my account and a 56 cleric and numerous alts I play every now and then. If I could find a way to rekindle the feeling and adrenalin rush of the first two years, I'd still be active.
DAoC-played a year
EnB--Couldn't hold my interest longer than two weeks.
Shadowbane-Could have been great but never will be now.
EVE--Wonderful potential but I fear the game will fail if the bugs aren't worked out by the end of the year.

MOH and Black Hawk Down. Not a MMORPG but fun none the less.

Playing games for longer than I can remember. Started off playing loads of Play by (snail) Mail games. VGA Planets was the first "on-line" game I ever played back in....never mind. Tradewars Planetarion Jumpgate Anarchy Online Earth & Beyond A Tale in the Desert (needed a break) Eve
I would rate Jumpgate best for gameplay, Eve best for graphics and ATITD best for immersiveness.
