You guys really want to patch on Friday? Is that a good idea? Dont forget a lot of people only play on Sundays, and after last week's fiasco, you may not want to risk losing the casual player again.

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER RELEASE A PATCH ON A FRIDAY!!!!!!!! NO matter how well you think it'll work, cause we saw how bad they can turn out.
You've released a patch before on a friday. It had big problems. Thousands of people were screwed during the weekend, which was a time when MOST PEOPLE play. You said you learned your lesson and won't be doing that anymore.

However, if it fixes the whole lot and make speople happily able to play for hours on end without major ctd, nodedroppage and stuck issues, why not patch on a friday?

We have downtime everyday. I say patch everydown time, one little fix at a time, everyday until there is nothing more to fix. Got some new content to add? Great, add then in WHEN IT'S READY and fully tested. The big patches that have added two bugs for every fix have been disaterous in the past. Surely there is a better way.

Edited by: Harliquin on 25/09/2003 05:47:38 You never patch on a friday because if some unexpected or unnoticed show stopper crops up in live there is noone in the office to fix the problem or rollback the code.
9/10 times a release during the week will not cause a showstopper 9/10 times a release on friday will cause a showstopper
This is a well known fact in the support community - I can almost guarantee that chaos code does NOT exactly mirror tranquility code & that is where the little show stoppers will come in
I think we've already seen the unexpeced problems with the last patch so just because it works fine on chaos now does not mean its not going to hit something else on tranq

I don't think a bug-fixing patch will cause too much chaos on Friday. Rolling out big patches that add functionality are the evil things to be avoided on week-ends.

The last quote in my signature speaks for itself in this matter. If it's a bug fix patch I say go for it. If it's a "new feature" patch then please don't kill our weekend of Eve playing and wait until Monday. ------------------------------------------------ "The best defense is a dead opponent." - Avaton White
"The very notion of adding new features to broken code is self defeating to the point of being borderline insane." - Par'Nabuk ------------------------------------------------ |

That is EXACTLY why you shouldn't patch on a friday. On top of that, MOST people play on the weekend, so if something DOES go wrong, it'll affect the MOST people during that entire week. if you patch on a monday/tuesday,it'll affect the least.
Now Discorp and others.. you say IF it'll fix bugs why not?? thing is, they don't KNOW exactly what'll happen when they apply the patch.. you think when they applied 1225 patch (whatever the big one was) that they KNEW it would fubar everything up?? Of course not.. they THOUGHT it would all be fine.. they THOUGHT it would all go smooth.. it didn't
they can think the same thing now, it doesn't mean anything. The truth is, no one knows EXACTLY what'll happen until it happens. And it shouldn't be risked on the start of a weekend. ------------------------------------------- If you kill them, they will die!
