I am currently running Windows Vista Beta 2, I know I know its beta.. I understand. My question is...
EVE says I need dx9.0b or higher to run the game. Well dxdiag says I have dx10 (though it appears that is just an artifical labeling for it reads as dx9e). I have heard that EVE is transitioning over to dx10 anyways with a new graphics update.
So how can I get EVE to bypass this weird issue, when in fact I do meet the directx requirements? Is there a file I can edit to do this? I tried the prefs.ini to save my acct name and pass.. but still cant do anything.
Please help even though I am using Vista Beta 2.

There are currently no DirextX 10 Graphics cards. Vista should come with DirextX 9, but as you said it is a beta so there is always room for failer. My suggestion is that if you are planning on gaming on this machine is to dual boot between vista and XP until the games you play are supported in Vista.

right.. its not the offical dx10, its a psuedo dx10 variant. I have a X1900XT video card. I can post a dxdiag screenshot and show that it does report it being directx 10.
I was hoping there was some way to bypass EVE from checking what version of directx is installed and initialize the video card to display the splash screen and then I can login and play.. eek! i need to play lol.
I could dual boot, but I really dont want to do that either.. guess I will wait and see if a dev reads this and possible offer a suggestion, maybe get lucky and get a hotfix for the issue?

DX10 has been designed basicly from the bottom up (from scratch). EVE does NOT use DX10 now, nor will it untill next year-ish when the Vista engine is released along with Vista. At that point, you will also need a DX10 compatible card to run this engine. NO CARDS ON THE MARKET CURRENTLY SUPPORT DX10. So to clarify, your EVE is not running in DX10 mode or such, as it is impossible.
DX10 emulates DX9 (its called DX9 Lite). It's not slower, and is actually a cut down version and quite the performance improvement, but it still runs EVE in DX9 mode. EVE will detect if you have the right DX version on install, and no more. It won't detect you have DX10 and screw up mid-game because you don't have the right version... The reason you have the black screen is because...
A) DX10 is a beta version of the Vista API. B) Windows Vista is a beta version of a product. C) The ATI drivers you are using are beta versions getting ready for Vista.
All of these combined are most probably the reason your EVE is screwing up. CCP don't support Vista, nor do they support DX10 currently. When the new engine is released, obviously, they will. But untill then, you're not meant to be using Vista as your main gaming platform anyway, and EVE was never designed to run on it. So posting bugs about it, isn't really helping anyone...
Just some handy info for you.

are you saying that dxdiag is NOT reporting directx 10? i dont care about EVE running in directx 10 graphic looks... like a dx8 game runs on a dx9 card and doesnt use dx9 it uses dx8.. so all i want is EVE to run in dx9 which dx10 (in its current iteration) can do, other dx9 games work. so basically...
...is there a way to have EVE bypass the checking of which directx version you have installed? YES or NO. thank you.
i mean seriously couldnt I run EVE in software mode if i wanted? Its my choice if i want to run a game at 640x480 with no eye candy graphics in 2d mode.. my choice, my machine. get it?

Edited by: Troyes Longshot on 24/05/2006 23:00:39 nevermind someone was able to help me that had superior knowledge.
1) Add an entry to the registry at HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Shell Folders called "Fonts" with the entry "C:/Windows/Fonts" 2) Ignore the error at Eve's startup that says your DirectX is out of date.

I've heard that performance under Vista is rather poor, can anyone confirm this? I would hate to get the game running but not a level that I can actually enjoy it at.

This works so I can login, but when login has finished and should switch to full screen and character select, nothing more happens
Maybe I need to delete cache? I'm running dual boot with WinXP/Vista. I hate deleting the cache cause I lose all settings and have to rearrange everything again :(

same problem here .
the solution it is to install the game .
you can not run the game from a previously installed folder ( for example from an existing version of winxp ).

Quote: 2) Ignore the error at Eve's startup that says your DirectX is out of date.
to permanently bypass this error, you can edit the autoexec.py file in EVE/script/sys
in the function def for GetDXVersion() find this block:
d3d9 = GetFileVersion("d3d9.dll") if (d3d9): ver = (9,0,"")
edit: ver = (9,0,"") to read: ver = (9,0,"c")
currently eve doesn't detect dx10 properly as a functional superset of dx9 (which it is).

Edited by: YA RLY on 14/06/2006 19:49:26 Holy hell it works! Major kudos to whomever figured this out. I know Vista is still only in the second beta, but to those that scoff, come on, the whole fracking point of a beta is so that users can FIND errors like this to report to developers. Isn't that why EVE-Online itself has a testing server as well? Yeah, that's what I thought :P
EVE-Online now works beautifully :))

well done for finding a solution and shame on you for your attitude towards grez
what grez said was spot on and hopefully will put alot of people off using vista on EVE for now, as it will do nothing but create more work for GMs through unfounded petitions and more threads cluttering up this forum
you are a spoilt brat for your attitude

Okay...I'm a little computer illiterate. Could someone explain to me exactly how to do that in a step by step list or something. I just got my vista computer and my EVE won't work...I need my eve.../twitch.
