Lets face it, they are bland, boring, present little uniqueness and are just a nuisance.
But is that what all the EVE fiction describes them to be? They are brutal, territorial and would really like to be left alone. They look like a meld between machine and some msshapen creature. Ok, we have those covered.
They are intelligent and tenacious, not just numerous. Oops...
Intelligence is a dangerous thing to meddle with,as the drones' existence already shows, yet, adding tenacity and general feel of fighting a swarm would really improve the immersion when facing rogue drones in EVE.
Weirdly enough, the rogue drones, that provide the best feeling for confronting a swarm, are the ones, using the player controlled drone models - no durability to speak of, numerous and potentially deadly if ignored (or they could be, i'll get to that)
And then there is the biggest immersion breaker for me - the drone infested Dominix, which just shoots the generic drone beam at you... What if...
Upon engaging you the drone host battleships unleash a swarm of small drones? Their total damage output matches the one of the host (maybe tunned down to account for improved application) and proceeds to unleash more of those at regular intervals until destroyed.
Or, the battleship keeps its original guns, yet at certain thresholds of received damage unleashes wings of drones and also does so upon being destroyed as autonomous systems continue to operate after demise of the whole entity.
To prevent exploitation, those waves of drones produce no wrecks (drone wrecks aren't know for plentiful bounty anyway).
As EVE releases are now not tied to big expansions, i believe this could easily be sneaked among other content, so drones get a bit closer tho what they are supposed to be. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4259327 - more suff in the Zero.Zero collection |

I think they've stayed away from doing this because it would just mean that the game is trying to track that many more ships. The whole reason why they're demoing "super drones" and guristas ships that are made to field 1-2 rather than 5. Also, many small enemy drones would kinda be fodder for smartbombs, though I figure they could work around that by making them attack you from outside bombing range.
Personally, I would love to see anoms where you go and attack a couple mothership drones, and then your screen lights up with dozens or more fighter drones coming to mess you up. |

Would love more drone anoms. I was trying to do some exploration (Mainly for data and relic sites) in the rogue drone regions for about a week and couldn't find anything particularly interesting. Sure there were some data sites, but I was only able to find a couple integrated drone bpc. Overall a very boring and nonprofitable experience. A crap ton of things to shoot at though |

There is a level 4 mission where a mother drone does exactly that. (Summons reinforcements based on it's damage level.) It's actually not that interesting. |
