While watching the keynote again today, I started to wonder something: So, Ran was a fighter pilot before she was taken by the Guristas, right? But, as far as I know, even Fighters/Fighter Bombers, as powerful as they are, are just drones in the game right now... where do piloted fighters come all of a sudden? Have they always been manned? I think the tooltips stated otherwise in the past. "ginger forum goddess, space gypsy and stone nibbler extraordinaire!" Shalua Rui - CEO and founder of Rui Freelance Mining (RFLM) |

They have always been manned. They are a sort of hybrid between a drone and a manned spaceship.
From evelopedia:
Quote:Fighters are the largest drone currently available. They are frigate sized and piloted by a single crewman. These weapons are deadly with each race having its own variation.
The unique ability to have drones that warp is left to motherships and carriers. When the fighter is deployed, and then set to engage the target, it will pursue it relentlessly. It will follow the target into warp, and land with them and engage wherever the target goes. The only escape for this is to Jump out of system, dock or destroy the fighter. for further reference, zoom in on a fighter model in-game. Maxim 34: If you're leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun. |

I'm confused as well. According to the wiki, fighters are 'frigate sized' but, their in-game descriptions put them as fighter sized. One of them, can't remember specifically which one, has the exact same long axis as an F-14 Tomcat's wingspan (20 meters extended) so, why do people call them frigate-sized when they clearly are not frigate sized? And if they are frigate sized, why are they not frigates? You don't scare me. I've been to Jita. |

They are specifically designed ships for fast combat situations, they are still ships, mostly no different than any smaller or bigger frigate just specialized and optimized for maneuverability as fighters are mostly, so they miss a lot of cargohold and any bigger compartments, usually walkaways and little corners that lead to the cockpit. Fighters tend to be really expensive due to all the complicated technology for tracking, scanning and so on. There are ships of these sizes (non-fighter ones) that are just a bit bigger or sometimes reaches the size of frigates, that are very commonly used for personal or business uses, like for trading, traveling and so on. The rookie ships are good example... In this smallest ship type there tend to be the biggest variety and diversity, from personnel transports to dropships or any kind of light ship, even industrials. Also even the 'smallest' industrial ships that capsuleers use are still large scale transports as the cargo they transport usually tends to be of bigger scale than non-capsuleer's cargo is and capsuleers usually operate in millions or billions of ISK while non-capsuleers don't have the needs to conquer or build huge starbases therefore they operate in a lower level of ISK vaules, which wouldn't require hundreds of meters long ships. More like it is in a SW Universe. |

Whilst Fighters are Frigate sized they deal Cruiser class damage. To do this they've had to have things like extended life support, capacitor reserves etc removed from them. So whilst they are frigate sized they aren't able to operate as frigates.
A ships class can be defined by it's size but normally it's defined by it's role/abilities. If it moves.... You obviously didn't kill it the first time. |

Always remember to name your drones.
It boosts their self-esteem and you will feel their loss. It help's keep us capsuleers humble to those who we lead |
