Got a little fan mail the other day.
The poor guy was npcing in 0.0 space and thought he'd be safe. Till meh came around in the famous "big fat slug" . *poof* apoc gone, *poof* pod gone. Fiddled with the corpse a bit and got this mail:
Tu**en22 > Subject: Sl*t 2006.04.03 22:51 you f****ing ****, what tha **ck did u do that for!?! **ck you dude i will kill you!
Some might find this really funny, i think its too pathetic to even bother petitioning the guy for offensive language :P
I dont know what to think of it. I'd pay to see people go nuts behind their computers because of this though. But how far does it go?
What u guys think? Willie needs help, he's blind and cant chew his own fish. Support me! |

The Boom, Headshot! guy? That's a skit work. There are about five in the series. It's put together pretty well.

Looks like an act to me. The bits inbetween the fits where he calms down hes clearly only pretending to play something. Still pretty funny though.

Is it still as funny when you dont receive hate mail but find out that you are the reason a number of people quit playing the game?
Mature players, not immature brats leaving in a hissy fit. People who like EVE, but can't be bothered to spend so much time on a game (with all the alt scouting, insta BMs and other "extra" things that are almost mandatory these days..) and thus has the choice to get blown up/scammed/corp thieved alot or quit...
Despite the quote, this one is not directed at you specifically, just that statement.
Hatemail is one thing and i agree with you there. But it seems alot of you have the impression that "People get annoyed/sad and quit = People who take it too seriously". Isnt it often the other way around? The people who dont have time to be hardcore gamers dont really have it easy in this game.
(Yes I'm sure some replies will be along the lines of "I am <insert name> and I play casually with great success!", but in my experience those people are the exception, not the norm.)
I don't really know I had a point to all this, it just strikes me as sad I guess, how some MMO player groups almost force you to "live the game" if you want to have a chance to explore most of its content.
I actually started EVE because of the skill system, so that I could concentrate on my life as well and not lose out totally because i couldnt keep ut with the play-12-hours-a-day people.
In my opinon those are the persons that take this game too seriously. And those people seldom quit...

eve is a game, but as in all games, it involves an emotional investment by the player, and when it comes to the eve community, i wouldnt be surprised if someone accuses eve of destroying his\hers sexlife, it is usually a rathar significant emotional investment, and theres your outcome :)
needless to say, pstchopaths play this game too ---

You are completely right Guth, but I'm not convinced there's a good solution that would maintain Eve's style of play.
Eve's relatively open PvP aspect leads to a large amount of lifeless dolts with 30M SPs in a HAC killing someone casual gamer's month old maller and then being hugely noisy about it. Frequently that casual gamer says "screw this" and leaves. Here's a hint to the under-clued: the weenie in the above scenario isn't the maller pilot.
Unfortunately, the things that would make Eve more palatable for a casual gamer (ability to opt out of PvP, good content not buried in player-controlled space, etc...) would compromise the very forces that drive the most interesting Eve interactions. Fighting people is what makes Eve fun. So allowing folk to opt out of that becomes.. not fun.
Perhaps what Eve is really missing is simply some sort of tiered combat system, where characters of a particular age are pushed into situations where they battle others of a similar age. I don't know the right implementation to do that, but such a system would address another item that gets mentioned elsewhere - very old chars hiding in NPC corps. Solve that, such that noobs fight noobs, and vets fight vets, and Eve would probably be more interesting.
I don't expect it to happen, but until then, we always have GoonFleet

I almost get like that german kid in the clip way up top there. like when i had my ferox and was ratting in a simple .4 to pass the time, and these 3 pirates (on a side note a corpmember had ****ed one of them off severily the day before) came warping in in these elite cruisers and whatnot. i tried to warp out but before i could even think they had drained my cap and were just pounding away. i was getting ****ed and the phone started to ring and i yelled at the person when i answered. I get like that when my ship is about to get blown up but then afterwards i calm down and dont really even think about it anymore. I have also writtin my fair share of hatemails and such. But at the end of the day i do finnally realize its just a game and its not that important. So yea there ya go, i put in my 2 cents. Sig removed, file too big. Please mail [email protected] for further information - Cathath I think this fits the standards :) |

I don't see any solutions myself really, and for the record I really dont want a system like the one most PVP MMOs implement: "play with those your own level or else.."
As Goonfleet has shown us, its not always about the skillpoints or t2 ships.. But there is a huge difference between the casual and hardcore gamers here. And most 0.0 regions are effectively locked down for most casual gamers.
(I'm a half-way casual gamer myself, forced by real life time constraints, and I play in 0.0 alot so there are some exceptions)
Perhaps some of the people here that are so happy with their hatemails should consider what happens to the players that get their day/week of work blown away and DONT reply to them with hatemail.. and their connection to those players that don't renew their subscriptions.. (not saying thats the main reason or anything, but I know this is factor for many ex-EVE players) You are only shooting yourself in the foot if you enjoy EVE and at the same time keep everyone who doesnt have alot of time to play (and get angry enough to take it personally and send you hatemail..) from being a part of the game you enjoy so much.
And pleaaaaase, if i get a reply with "then they should have kept out of 0.0, low-sec etc" I will just be annoyed at some peoples ignorance. Though i shouldn't, this is the internet after all, home of the trolls and flamers . They didnt make this game just for hardcore for life gamers.. Maybe that is evident in the very nice REAL-TIME skill system they use. Some people are stupid in their approach to low-sec. Others are just unlucky or not willing warp to a safespot each time local gets a new member or two..
Safespots, instas and scouting alts arent really compulsory parts of this game as far as the game description, and game developers from what ive been reading, goes. So expecting it from everyone to be able to survive is a bit harsh.

Decided to toss my 2 isk into the fray....
I am CEO of a pirate corp, and as such i think i have an obligation to share our point of veiw on this subject.
From time to time i feel for the victims of our attacks but not often. CCP warns you several times when you try to jump into a low sec system. A big window jumps up screaming DANGER beyond this point and does so everytime you make the jump into low sec until you check the ignore button on the window. How is that not a pretty big clue that if you take the jump your at risk of losing your ship?
I have heard people say oh but you HAVE to go through low sec to get to markets or missions... These are choices you make of your own free will aware of the risk involved.
This game is designed for you not solo your way through to lvl 60 (for those fleeing the lame WoW)
This game is not a grinder where you kill 800 rats for a new skill book or super fancy mounts (Those EQ2 players)
The whole game is about building a corp, working together, helping each other, LEARNING from others. Thats how we all learned to play eve and thats how it will stay.
All the talk of how hard things are for new players or how much time you put in for a ship only to have it blown up by some no name pirate are people with nothing better to do than *****.
If people spent half the time they do posting on the forums about how unfare the game is or crying about spilt milk and writting hatemail maybe they could afford to lose a cruiser or Battleship.
We have currently 6 members who are under 1m skill points, they are out there fighting and pirating like the pros. How you might be wondering? Well after getting blown up and losing all they had worked for they pulled up thier boots and convoed me for ADVICE.
This maybe a hard thing for some to understand but if you ask for advice from a more experenced player who has been around longer than you 99% of the time they are going to tell you how they caught you, what you can do to avoid it next time or how to make better use of your time in eve. Hell in our case these guys wanted to learn how to handle themselve and have some people around to HELP them. This is what drives eve. This is also why the subscriptions to eve are increasing daily (Not sure of the number but its well over 100,000 active accounts.) This goes for anti-pirate corps (god bless you, you guys rock) You find what you like to do or if not sure yet try a few different corps out.
I am in no way saying that there are not problems with the current low sec conditions such as gate campig BS's able to fast lock anything jumping into a system with NO CHANCE to live but all in all its a solid system.
Eve is what you make of it.

Your point is? If i would have wanted to make him look worse then he already behaves then i would have posted his full name, and expensive setup.
I'm just trying to make a point. People calling other persons names in a way, thats just not right. This is a game, for u it might be a "lifestyle" and u prob go to work with an "EVE ONLINE" CUP and HAT" Deja. But for most, this is a game.

It seems to me it is assumed that people get mad for their ships getting shot apart. In my experience, that is the problem in very few cases. It's the pod-killing that is getting people mad. The pirat gains nothing, and your implants are gone. Senseless lose-lose situation i'd say. (Or is there any way to get at the "contents" of a corpse i don't know off?)

And by the way, with comments like that flying around here... i would think twice to call someone a psychopath for a single-line hatemail...

i dont know why you complain about this mail ?
you blow up his ship, you kill his pod, he swears at you ... or do you actually except him to enjoy it ?
or would you guys like it if your targets pay you for the ammo and missles you used to blow them up ?
see it as roleplay just like you play your role ... you are an bad guy and kill him, he is ****ed off ... he lets you know
