Seeing the prices of some tough to get BPOs and the costs of getting some of the best stuff in this game, and knowing that some of you have played over 3 years now, it bears the question: how much money do some of us have??
I just want to see how far behind I am. Feel free to brag about your wallets....I want to know. How large can a game wallet really go, to date? |

There are single people with wallets ranging into 200bn ISK I believe (though I have no proof).
These people however, are pretty rare, most people will have a couple hundred million ISK, or perhaps a few billion if they are good at collecting it.

I would say that the average eve player has around 200 mil isk in their wallets, and another 200 mil isk in items. Max sig image dimensions are 400w x 120h & 24,000 byte filesize. --Jorauk |

maybe 200 mill in ISK but people typically have way more in assets, i have 250 mill in cold hard cash but also have countless ships including a hulk and a Vulture which already puts me above your assets guese along with numerous cruiser BPOs every friggy BPO without even thinking about the raw tonnage of minerals and stuff like gistii afterburners id wager that a more average guese is 200 million cash and a couple of billion in assets

I have 160m isk, with assets about 200-250m total. I have been playing for 9-10 months (oh man, its been that long....)
But that was because recently i went to big blue space (geminate) and ratted for a straight week. I borrowed about 80m total, and paid it back within 3 days of ratting. All you need is a BC or BS and you are set.

The RL friend that got me started about a month ago had 38 billion in cash at that time. I don't know the total number of ships and equipment he has, but I'm sure that amounted to another 10 billion at least.
I have 47 milion, and I'm amazed at what that won't buy.

I have about 40 mil now and about 160 mil in assets. I just started playing a few months ago and figured it would be stupid to just fly frigs and save isk.
My spending has slowed now that I have all the necessary ships to run missions to make more isk. I will say that the ammo and skill books I purchase are expensive so that's where the isk is going now.

Your newbs have it easy. when i started playing this game, it took me 3 months to afford to get into a crsuier, cuz the game was just hard, eve was barren back then, it was not like now where there are plenty of people around that are just willing to help you out. When i got my first 1 mill isk i was over joyed. Lol once i saved up for my crsuier it was destroyed somthing like3 days later, but was insured and i ended up saving up for a better crsuier after that. Once i was in a stead crsuier it took me at least4 more monrth after that to get into a battle ship. they were not like now. Back them a Teir 2 battle ship was like 150 mill isk and a tier 1 was 110.
Now a few years later.. i have at least
3 battle ships 5 crsuier 2 command ships 1 frighter countless frigs a few collectable faction ships 3 POS's and soon i will have 2 dread and 2 carriers
i miss the old days when you could be in .4 space and not see people for hours cuz people were cuz to scared to enter. but now you cant go any where really with out haveing at least 6 ppl in local with you. I guess that is why i like it so much better out in 0.0

I've been playing about 3 months with a full time job and I have more than that.
Its reasonable that most pvp players rat until they have enough to refit a few times, then go back to pvp where they lose most of it.
The miners, industrialists and missiondrones are making 50mil+ a day and losing little or none. Those that have been playing over a year should be past the 10 billion mark.

isk is easy to make with just the slightest effort. the hard thing is to not buy all the cool toys when you have a bigger wallet and i think thats why the avg wallet is kinda low.
when i wanted to buy my moros i just put a hold on all my spending. i saved 3bil in under 2 months. granted i sold every peice of loot i got where as normally i use all the cool loot i get from pvp/npcing.
as for how much isk the 3years old have. i am betting its more of a avg or 1-2 billion. --------------------------------- What doesn't kill you makes you injured.

One of the members of my corp really wanted me to take the time to count isk, assests and investments. I think that for some of us who have made a little bit in this game, that is bad form. For others, myself included, we just don't care enough to count it. The closest I would be willing to say is, there are members of my corp who make about a billion every week or two. Also, to say that, if you find yourself a good investment at 10% return per month. 10 Billion isk will make you a lot of isk esp., if you just let it compound every month.

IMO;
1-6 months, 200-400 mil net assests. 6 months to a year, around the 500 mil mark. 1 years to 2 years, 500 to 1 billlion. 2 years plus, multipule billions.
For the average 'i take 8 hours out my day to sleep' player People with enough time spare to play all day everyday should hav ALOT more than the guestemates above, but that goes without saying.

Well I've been only playin' for 15 or so days and have just over 8mil. So I've got a long way to go.
But that said 5mil was a donation and the 4 mil was from insure of a cruiser that was donated to me and I got when I was destroyed and podded :(
So I think I'm negative ISK in real game terms :)

Originally by: Radioactive Babe can any of the peeps with more than 5 bil combined isk and assets comment on whether this wealth started when they got an nice T2 bpo from an agent?
By the time i got my hands on a t2 BPO, i already made 10b or so. Of course, the fact that someone missed a zero on the price of said BPO helped. Of my 30-50b assets, only 3b are directly related to t2 lottery / production (from a BPO i bought for 18,5b). Rest has been made reselling faction, officer and deadspace gear and lately low end t2 BPOs.
I would hazard a guess that, of the current top500, only those few that have more then 10 dedicated RnD accounts actually have a significant part of their wealth coming from winning t2 BPOs. Most of the wealth comes from buying (cheap) t2 BPOs (some people bought taranis BPOs for 100m, or traded for a fitted Scorpion back in 2004) and producing from them. I know an extremely wealthy player who just recently won his first and second t2 BPO (roughly 10b and 40b). At that point, it did not change his assets significantly.

Coming up on 2 and a half years here and never had much more than a billion isk in cash and assets
Current greatest hits are 160 mill cash and 2 regular battleships one HAC the mods and minerals and BPs in my various hanger are probably another 200-300 mill so lets call it a bill atm.
Sure a lot of the time I wish I had more iskies than I actually do but then i go rat long enough to get 100 mill or so and get bored and go and blow something up.
I'm sat at work typing this I( dont really want my game time to be work as well.

Lemme see ... I just lost my prized covert ops ship, so now I'm left with some 6 million ISK in me pocket. A few T1 frigattes and modules are my only material assets. It's what happens when you prefer frigattes over other ships and find little fancy in mining I suppose.

My bounty is less than 0.5% of my combined wealth so theres little point in me claiming it via an alt.

Well, I'm 2 years into the game. Far from rich when it comes to cash (less then 50M on piggy bank), but assets... well, things accumulate and I got some assets that pay off quite nice without me having to do much for it ;)

Noone in his right mind would keep ISK in his wallet. The thing is loosing value faster than an mwding ceptor. Everybody is hiding behind assets which get revalued along with ISK and therefore have a kinda fixed value.

6.5 bill hard iskies, and the usual items of stock and the paraphanalia you need to go with it.
I do know people with a lot more than this, and on the other end of the scale some real hardocre PvP'rs with 2-3 years in game.. 37-40 mill SP, who have nothing. Purely flying from 1 ship to the next when it goes pop. relying on insurance etc etc.
And they are having a ball, I on the other hand am becoming increasingly bored sitting on my iskies

Originally by: WhiskeyDP isk isnt everything. it helps, but doesnt necissary(sp?) mean u have more fun playing the game so dont get hanged up about how much isk u have/dont have. just enjoy the game as it is
I respectfully disagree WhiskeyDP...ISK to some of us is a measure of success or failure in the game. Many people here are reporting ISK/Assets in excess of 500 Million, many much higher....good, very good. You need ISK in this game to do most anything worthwhile. I would say these people are successful.
Now, using myself as an example, I have 3.1 Mil ISK in wallet, and about 75 Mil ISK in assets (and that's after about 12 months with this character). Not good, no, not good. A lack of financial resources has affected what I did or did not do ingame many times. So yes, ISK is important; it is the almost literal equivilant of XP and/or Rank that you see used in other games. I do still enjoy the game, but without a decent amount of ISK, there has been a tremendous amount of things I have wanted to do that I couldn't.
So yes, ISK is VERY important in EVE in my honest, if noobish, opinion.

Poor Eve if it will come to this way...rly...
But unfortunately hes right, I believe this is because EVE reflects so much of RL, and human nature. Not CCP's fault, just the way people play the game, in RL and EVE time.
In RL you need money.. simple as that, the more you have the easier life is.. generally.
And human nature also afects it all, people are naturally greedy, and want to have more than Joe next door, hence the ridiculous player ran market, e.g HAC's. And they want to control it, and impose their will on others.
So unfortunately, ISK is a win for most, when the real crux of EVE is PvP..

been playing since late october 2005,
currently have about 12 bil isk, and roughly 15/18 bil in assets.
My IPO had to be discontinued due to time constraints, otherwise I think i'd be nearing the 100 bil mark in the next three months.
so yeah, I consider myself pretty poor right now, comparatively.

Eve should be measured in fun, not in ISK. Its very possible to make the game about collecting money, but often collecting money in this game is not very fun. It can be mining, trading or whatever. It all gets old. In the end you will have spent countless days actually working instead of having fun. Dont fall into that trap...
Ive set a limit for myself on the amount of money i want to have in the wallet. I recently reached it and will now not be collecting money anymore until it falls beyond 75% again. I recommend you do that too.

Ive made most of it trading npc goods. Different npc corporations will buy and sell these trade goods every day at fixed prices. Corporation X might sell for 1000 isk and corporation Y might buy it for 1200 isk. So what you do is you buy alot of the stuff, then take it to the buyer station and put a Sell order on it. After downtime it will sell to the npc corporation if you have the best price.
So check market for Trade Goods and go look at what corporations will buy and sell a certain commodity. Spend some time with this and you will start to understand it.
Buying and selling stuff from players to players can be very worthwhile too, but i suggest starting with npc trade goods since they give very good profit as well.

Not good, no, not good. i still say that isk isnt everything. sure it helps but its not everything. i am one of those wealthy ones with hundred of billions in isk/assets but i would trade everything i have if i could get that feeling i had the first time i undocked my noob ship and warped or when i travelled 80(40 jumps one way, no shuttles back then) jumps to get my first omen @ 5,5m(which was a lot of isk back then) or when i was the first in my corp(and probably one of the first 50-100 in eve) to get a battleship.
i still had more fun without the isk then i do with the isk. i have an old eve mate who just came back to eve with a new char after being away for 2 years. even if he doesnt have any isk or skills he enjoys the game more then ever even if he make crappy isk from doing lvl 2/3 missions
so again: dont get hanged up about how much isk everyone and his mother have. just try and enjoy the game as long and as much as u can

That is obscene. Absolutely obscene. If you have that much isk, I should know your name. I should see your name and think "Oh man, there's Nimie, that guy who runs all those prize givaway events" or "Hey, it's Nimie! How's the latest massive project coming?".
Some people have so much isk simply because they have nothing to do with it. If I had 35B, I'd invest it and give the interest away in events or set up some projects like outpost construction. As it stands, I only have about 2 billion isk and 4-5 billion in liquifiable assets (another 700mil in implants in a jump clone). With that isk, I'm setting up what I can, some POS and a corporation that can call a place home. I'm buying friends game time cards so they can play when they can't afford isk. I'm playing the market with it and at any time may have all or most of it in assets for a time. Having more than a billion isk in my wallet makes me think "This is a billion isk I need to invest in order to make more isk or make people's lives better".
If you REALLY have 35 billion in your wallet, you're a fool.

How the hell can he be a fool? 35b liquid means he is a damn sight more intelligent than most at what he does.
If he has 100b assets, you can assume that this 100b generates income, thus adding to his liquid cash, making him a very shrewd business man.
Should he do more with his liquid isk? Not unless he wants to increase his workload and not if he is happy with the way things go at the moment.
Based on your conclusions about someone who has this type of cash available, what would I be if I had...

Unless he managed to make that 35b within the last week, he has had billions sitting accumulating in his wallet. ISK left in a wallet depreciates. 100mil a year ago was worth more than 100mil today.
Isk not invested is isk devalued and lost. That's a fact. It doesn't matter what he's doing to do with it unless it's only in his wallet temporarilly while he sorts something out like if he's selling stock this week to purchase a HAC BPO. I admit that it's foolish of me to assume that he's not going to do that but he's not the only person in eve with billions in isk just lying there, this wasn't pointed squarely at him. Even if you are saving up for something big, save up for it in less liquid forms which grow rather than just throwing isk on the pile until you have enough. Do you save large sums of money IRL by putting your paychecks in a big box? No, you put it in a savings account to gain interest.
I stand by what I said. If you have a billion isk in your wallet for over a few weeks, you're losing out and you're a fool. I know because I am a fool. I could have double what I do now if I'd invested it when I wasn't using it.

150b isk? I'd call you insane. You've also made the mistake of assuming that investments eat up effort and time. This isn't the case. Invest in shares, invest in trading companies, invest in a high rate savings account from EIB, it's all the same thing. No effort, minimal risk, large gains that let your idle isk grow and some of those methods are incredibly liquid, allowing you to take back your isk in a matter of days. The EIB high rate savings account (minimum deposit 1B isk) is a nice one but it doesn't give you quick access to the isk so it's not as liquid, but it's perfectly fine for long-term investments (3 months +).
I expect to have at least a billion of my isk sitting in my wallet for over 3 months because I am saving for things so I will be investing it in an EIB account. Either I could go for the 1-month cycle savings account that will net me approximately 20% interest over three months or go for the high interest one that will net me 25% over three months with no access to it for the duration. Either way, if I leave it in my wallet, I get 0% interest. EIB, if you're interested.
There's a phrase that is related to this. They say that money you keep on you is "burning a hole in your pocket". It's true because currency devalues as it inflates unless you gain interest on it over the rate of inflation.

So, just say I choose to invest my money in something else like shares and it goes ass up. Thats a lot bigger loss than it simply depreciating in value.
Besides, if history teaches us anything in this game its that nothing ever stays the same value for long, so wether you invest or not, your isk doesnt depreciate or increase in value, its the assets you buy with it that do.
Saying 100m a year ago was worth more than it is now.... hmm, your wrong buddy.
From what I remember, battleships are pretty much the same price (sometimes cheaper), as are most ships. Faction loot has dropped in price, as have minerals, and most mods. Its only certain tech 2 ships that have actually risen in value.
So on this assumption of yours, If I had of bought billion of isk worth of minerals, billions in ships, billions in faction mods,
I would now be at quite a loss.
Ivesting in shares and corporations is fine if your prepared to lose alot of isk. Shares out there now are a rip off, ISS for example. If you bought them now at the price they were at time of issue, it would take years to even get your money back, and its exactly the same with most of them out there.
Those that own these shares have been scammed by the BOB alt alliance ISS. , they are just too dumb to realise it.
God knows how long it would take for those who bought them off the original buyers. Some prices were 3 times the amount they were worth.
unless you find someone else stupid enough to buy them from you for a ridiculously overpriced amount, your at a major loss and to be honest I would rather have the iskies sitting in my wallet.

lol ok isk will never depreciate in value. It will always be worth the same since there is no other currency in eve, unless your comparing it to rl currency.
Not too sure if English is your primary language so is this mabey what you were 'trying to get across to us all?' :
Doing nothing with your isk means that you will never get any richer. 'potentially' it could have made you a lot more if you risked it in something that could have brought a return on your money. So, in 'theory' your 1 billion isk could have been worth 2 billion isk by now.
This statement would be correct, but the fact remains, 1 billion isk is always worth 1 billion isk, wether it was 2 years ago, now, or in 2 years time.
Heres your options - 1) invest it in silly things like IPOs and risk losing it all, or get lucky and sell the shares for profit. Rinse and repeat. --- To risky, could lose alot more than the gains offered.
2) Dont invest it, maintain your wealth.
Your isk will never drop in value.

Yes it will... in relation to certain other things. Examples:
1. From the start of EVE to 1 year ago, ISK lost value relative to mineral costs. Trit rose to 3.5 ISK at its high point, and relative to mineral values, ISK was worth a lot less.
2. ISK has vastly decreased in value in relation to the value of tech 2 blueprints, whose prices have rose because more people have more ISK.
ISK's value is inversely proportional to how much there is of it in the game. If lots of people have lots of ISK in their wallets, prices will rise due to their bidding over the limited supply, and higher prices means ISK is worth less.

It most certainly will. It's called inflation, it happens when there's more of something (anything, isk, ore, modules) continually going into an economy than is going out. The more there is of something, the less each individual one is worth. In eve, more isk is pumped into the game through bounties, npc buy orders, insurance payouts etc than is removed by NPC sell orders, market charges etc. In the first year of eve, a million isk was a lot. For someone to have a few hundred million isk would make them rich. Today, if you don't have a billion after a year, you're not doing well. And it's not just because they've been playing that long. The expensive things today, the rare things, cost billions. Back in the day, the rare things that we had were priced in tens or hundreds of millions, not billions.

Explain to me how 1 billion isk 1 year ago is worth les than 1 billion now.
you say inflation, more isk in circulation....
well, there is more producers, more items, more customers, so it BALANCES ITSELF OUT.
a battleship cost pretty much the same a year ago as what it does today, and its the same for 99% of the items out there.
The only difference is they have released new content to supplement those with insane amounts of isk, and they will continue to do so. There is also more new players contributing to the economy.
I imagine there will be ships in a years time costing 100s of billions of isk, but this doesnt mean that 1 billion is worth less.
As for what you can make profit wise on most things, its still the same, apart from minor differences due to new skills, researched blueprints, etc.
Pat yourself on the back for getting published, but it obviously wasnt for your knowledge of game economics.
I can accept that most things do increase in value and others decrease. Im well aware of the market and how it works otherwise I wouldnt be as well of as I am, but the fact remains that 1 billion isk will always be worth 1 billion isk.
Do you seriously ever see battleships being worth only 30m because there is too many in circulation? No.
Do you ever believe that a standard blueprint will ever significantly change in value? No.
Basic economics dicatates that as one thing increases in value, another decreases.
The only way your theory about isk (and mr shikari's) losing value could ever be applied is that if everything in eve drastically increased in cost, which will never happen.
Hence, im right, your wrong, and I win like always.

Battleship prices are rather lower if anything now.
Faction battleship prices have been going down too.
Pretty much all implants have been going down..
The only things that have really been going up in value are the special limited edition ships, T2 ships (due to massive increase in demand and no change in supply) and T2 blueprints...

1 year ago I could buy myself 12 ishtars with a billion. Now I can only buy about 6.
And, if I was a PvPer who used lots of Ishtars (like many do), that would be all that mattered.
Its worse when you factor in the equipment.
And if you're buying T2 BPOs, its even worse.

A patchday can turn a 4b BPO into a 20b BPO overnight (happened), and a 30b BPO into a 2b BPO (could happen after kali)... and since the only real investment in eve is t2 moneyprinter BPOs (component supplier -> set for 30d -> dump the output on market 20% below current market price and see resellers pick them up, all for 1h online timer per month), keeping ISK is not that bad of an idea.
A quick summary of faction market after RMR:
low end faction gear (SS tracking computers, TS PDUs etc): unchanged or slightly cheapr some shield tanking and missile gear: great increase in value (Dread Guristas Invulnerability fields: 100m -> 300m, DG BCU 100m -> 200m) Same for high end tanking mods interestingly, armor repairers went down slightly, while armor hardeners went up (x-type thermic hardener 180m -> 240m+) Officer PDUs, BCUs, Invuls, Cap rechargers, cruise missile launchers: dont ask -
Navy battleships: rapid loss of value (due to COSMOS), Minmatar agent offers are no longer worth taking. Navy megathron and Apoc below 900m, fleet tempest 500-700m, Navy Raven 1100m +5 Implants crashed (+5 willpower peaked at 1400m after RMR, now down to 300-400m) Pirate ships: price increases for previously common frigates and cruisers (succubus 5m -> 15m, Daredevil 10m ->30m, Worm 5m -> 25m), battleships went down despite drop change.
10MN AB II BPO: last one sold for 10b Ares BPO: someone offered 10b for one, owner refused to sell
As you can see, investing money in faction battleships or +5 implants would have lead to a quick ruin, while buying a random medicore (or bad) t2 BPO out there would have made you rich just by letting it rot in your hanger. If kali indeed fixes the t2 market to be beneficial to the masses and not to some rich tycoons (who have roughly as many accounts as the masses), you can expect 50b for chelm's cap rechargers, and 2b for Hulk BPOs.

And anyone who believes that a Hulk BPO will ever be worth 2 billion has no idea what they're talking about.

I have. And I am not fond of repeating myself, nor do I think it would do any good. If you think having all that isk in your wallet is a good idea, go for it. I understand how inflation relates to eve's economy and will be protecting my assets by investing them in projects where they will grow.
Using NPC-items and T1 ship values to judge the economy doesn't work because they are solidly set at a minimum due to NPC prices and insurance prices. That's an artificial stabalising agent in the economy and should be discounted because it's not part of the dynamic player-determined economy. Try using T2 as a base for your comparison, there's no NPC involvement all the way from POS fuel aquisition to the finished product. See that as the economy has inflated, the price of desirable T2 items that are in undersupply has risen by more than can be accounted for by a rise in demand. That indicates that isk is worth less.
Another good base is work. One unit of work, let's say a week's mercenary war campaign per pilot of exceptional skill, has increased in value. Their skill levels are the same relative to the other players, the only thing that's happened is that the amount people are willing to pay has gone up. That has happened because people have more isk to spend. People are willing to pay a percentage of what they have to hire mercs for a week. The amount they have has increased due to inflation. The work isn't worth any more than it used to be, the isk is worth less.
The bottom line is this: The average player two years ago had less isk than the average player today but they are not richer because EVERYONE has more. This is a fact that this thread should have shown to you if nothing else. people posting that they have billions or hundreds of millions when in the past people were good if they had a few hundred million and the BIGGEST corporations had under 10 billion in corporate assets and wallet funds. When everyone has double the isk, isk is worth half as much. If tomorrow they added a zero onto the end of everyone's wallets, prices of player-determined goods would multiply by the same factor of ten.
But I know that I am never going to convince you that you're wrong, not because you are correct but because you are unable to accept that there's a chance you aren't. So this is the last I have to say on the issue. Anything else I could say to you would be repeating myself and anything else you could say to me would be redundant.

1 billion isk will always be worth 1 billion isk. It doesnt lose value. Those of you who think otherwise are stupid.
The only way in which currency can lose value is if it competes with another, or more is made that exceeds demand for it. End of discusion.
You are trying to apply real life economics to a games economics. For this, you who disagree with me are incredibly stupid.
The reason why I have based my argument on the NPC market is because that is were the currency comes from in the first place. It comes from nowhere else at all.
Since NPC corps are a constant on the market and the agent rewards are almost identical to a year ago and that one is almost identical to the year before that, then ISK will always have the same value. Sure there is different agent rewards but this doenst come into the equasion. The ONLY way isk will decrease in value is if a standard agent mission that pays you on average 100,000 isk starts paying 200,000 isk. Or if NPC corps start paying twice as much for tradegoods. Isk value will decrease by 50% in this case.
Its the only way isk will ever lose value and those that disagree with me are too much up your own ass's to see it.
Only assets can ever change in value, not isk.
Yes there is more isk in circulation but there is more content, more players, more minerals, more ships, etc, thus levelling it out. The developers have done an excellent job in running the npc economy.
As I said, the ONLY way isk value will change is if the NPC market changes. The tech2 market has absolutley nothing to do with it since its player run and there are no players out there that can make isk from nothing like agents do.
From this I can only assume you dispose of your isk in questionable ways and this is how your basing isk losing value
Either that or your a financial 'fool' as you so elegantly put it earlier.

Correct.
And guess what? More ISK is made every single day. And thus the value of ISK falls.
I suggest you go learn economics 101.
Explain to me, by the way, how if prices rise, the value of ISK "stays the same." If I can buy less today with 1 billion than I could a year ago, the value of ISK fell, period.

And they are having a ball, I on the other hand am becoming increasingly bored sitting on my iskies
Great you state that. Iskies isnt everything, I d say what counts is how much fun is EvE to you on a scale from 1-10? But that'd be another topic.
On topic: I guess I have fairly average amount of iskies for 2.5 years of playing (Never won the t2 lottery ). No idea whatsoever how much in assets, never calculated this and probably never will.

highlight all the sentance when quoting me as your basing your answer on part of my statement. it actually read "The only way in which currency can lose value is if it competes with another, or more is made that exceeds demand for it."
You would be correct, assuming all of these...... content hadnt changed. the player numbers didnt change. isk sinks didnt change. more isk comes into the game.
Then, and only then would isk be worth less overall.

If you bought 1 item of everything a year ago, then sold it today, you would wind up with almost an identical amount of isk. Since the fall and rise of items is diverse across the market.
If anything, ships have dropped in price, mods have dropped in price, minerals have dropped in price.
The only rise in costs comes in the form of tech2 and its required materials, so it balances itself out. A move by the developers to prevent isk becoming 'worth less'.

The fact is that there are investment opportunities in eve and the reward is proportional to the risk. Isk left uninvested depreciates.
lol ok isk will never depreciate in value.
Dentara... you have little clue ... isk depreciates or appreciates... and that can be measured by what a given amount of isk buys you at any time.
Your argument that isk doesn't depreciate because 1 billion isk today = 1 billion isk tomorrow is about as silly as saying RL currencies don't appreciate or depreciate because 1 $ is always worth 1 $... money depreciates in value even when not compared to other currencies... but simply to the goods or services it can buy... its called inflation...and eve suffers from it...but not as badly as most would think...

Are you blind? Its already been posted: Tech 1 prices are not comparable because of NPC price controls.
Tech 2 items are the only good example of a non-price-controlled item, and their prices have risen vastly. Same with tech 2 BPOs.
Did you know that a Muninn BPO went for 2-3 times less 2 years ago, even though Muninns sold for the same price?

If you can spend isk on it, and make isk on it then its comparable. This means NPC is included in the equation.
And yes I was aware of the munin BPO prices. The difference is now BPO sellers are basing the value of it on what you can make profit wise in one year. This is why im the best

T1 items are seeded by npcs...that means there is always a constant supply of the item well over demand at a price which is pretty much anchored... it varies with demand ever so slighlty because the supply is truly huge for the most common items...
What this creates is an anchor price that becomes a reference... even if demand makes price creep up a little everyday (due to the npc price formula written by ccp into the npc seeded market item prices) this is usually balanced by loot drops sold on market by young players.... who tend to sell lower than the market anchor price for a quick sale.
In the long run that means 95% of the t1 market has a rought constant price. This translates in the truth that 1 billion isk has roughtly the same value today when buying say cap recharger I as it did 2 years ago.
so yes your 1 billion isk is worth the same as 1 billion isk 2 years ago if your point of reference are t1 items.
Unfortunatly t1 items make poor investments (i'm not going to go into why here) so in the discussion about investments in EvE using t1 items as reference for appreciating the 'value' of isk is rather silly as you would be choosing a referene point to assess value which is wildly different from what you are planning to invest in.
If you need a real world analogy think about $1,000.
$1,000 today buys you roughtly the same amount of babanas as it did 2 years ago. Now you're an investor thinking of investing in gold. would you use the reference point of bananas to assess the potential of investing in gold ?Or would you perhaps look at the value of your $ compared to gold in the last 2 years in order to decide on whether or not to invest ? If you have any idea about economics you'll know exactly why I chose gold as my proposed investment.

Noone is disputing the fact that there is inflation in eve. Its rampant, its everywhere.
What i am disputing is the fact that "ISK in wallet" is bad. There are no secure investments in eve, some are pretty obvious in hindsight though. Yes, right now, everyone would travel back in time and buy up all taranis BPOs for 100m each.
But CCP might have decided that they want a casual fun pvp game instead of a "dark sinister megacorporation moneygrind for occasional pvp fun" game. With the current influx of "normal" gamers, they might still decide to turn around. Some investments turned out to be pretty bad. Nightawk BPO for 47b. The person who bought it didnt care that he could have bought several others for 30-35b a couple weeks later (which he did buy as well ...). It might be worth 60b around christmas, but inflation is not a law of nature. I remember people saying Centus x-type Reppers selling for 1b long ago. Now they are around 500-550m.
t2 BPOs are a double gamble. Knowing CCP, they will protect t2 BPOs. But noone knows what will happen. Most, including me, dont expect drastic changes to the status quo. But the price of hulk BPOs and hulks depends on supply and demand. Noone knows wether eve will have 200k, 2m or 20k players in 2 years. Noone knows how the new R$D system will look like. Noone knows wether Tux decides that the shiney new ship you can produce from your shiney new t2 BPO for 30b "doesnt make sense"... AF nerf, tachyon boost - i doubt anyone saw that coming...
CCP is not afraid of major changes that affect the economy. Free dreads and instant research with RMR for everyone who saw it coming. Billions of ISk for everyone who bought cheap controll towers. And not long ago Ginger Magician found out that CCP can make people lose money as well ;)
Right up until this point, buying t2 BPOs was probably the best course of action. It might still be - i have a Pilgrim BPO left just in case ;)
People who keep 30b ISk in wallet are not stupid, they invest in ISK. That might be a good decision, or a bad one - same as every other decision. But the chances for major losses are pretty limited. As is the overhead.

Battleships are still the most important class of ships ingame, so their value does count for a lot.
The entire t2 lottery and thus the t2 manufacturing industry is idiotic, so can't say i'm particularly impressed by people basing inflation entirely on it.
ISK in wallet isn't a bad investment at all. Especially since it means you can react fast to opportunities when they arise.

I've been npcing for like 6 months straight and havent gotten a single decent spawn. There's no point for me joining the lottery since most of the bpos are probably seeded already, and there's like 5000 people already in it. I need isk tbfh.

Been playing EVE for getting on for 3 years although Ive had some very long breaks in that time.
Ive got around 100mill atm in my wallet and tbh its enough for me. All I need it for is to buy ships to pvp with so I only ever rat enough to keep pvping, if I end up with loads of isk I get careless with my ships cos I dont worry bout replacing em :D

Been around for a long time but do not consider myself rich. There are some way way richer. Look to the rare BPO manufacturers for the richest!

The Egg came first.
Genetic information in a species does not change in a lifetime. It only changes between generations. Thus the organism we would consider the "chicken" came from the egg, while the thing that laid the egg would be related but not fully considered a chicken do to whatever variance in gene sequencing.
Oh and eggs are much more ancient in animals then chickens are evolutionarily speaking =)
You people who argue ISK never changes value are off your heads by the way. Which direction the value is going is legitimate debate (i.e. people are building ships for below mineral cost...noobs)

Nice economics debate. Can I play?
What is money other than a tool with which to purchase something. It's the intermediary between the services you provided to someone else, and the goods you wish to obtain from another party.
If it purchases less, it is worth less. End of story.
e.g. If I had $1 dollars in US confederate money, at one time I would have been rich. However now, I would have only paper. (Crappy example since museums and private collectors would be all on my jock, but you get the point).
Saying money does not change value=ignorance. Financial newspapers and websites will tell you that money changes value every day.
Money is not a literal item. It is a representation of purchasing power and if it does not purchase as much it is worth less. If it purchases more it is worth more. If you can't agree with that, you are functioning at about a 10-11 year old level and not yet enjoying abstract thought.

Nope. I had several billions before I ever got a T2 BPO (a minor, but fairly lucrative ship module). It took dedication to build the pre-BPO wallet, and frankly it still does.
As we can see by this thread, not every has that dedication or level of interest.
The key is having fun, regardless. Someone said earlier that they only had some small amount of isk and had been playing for three years or something like that. Well, I assume that if they've bothered to play for three years, they've had a good deal of fun. That's more important than ISK in the the wallet.

I was doing pretty well until yesterday. 3 months into Eve, and after a lot of missions, trading and ratting all of my wealth was tied up in a Navy Issue Augoror and some faction mods. This stuff was too expensive for me to use, so I packed it into a Badger 2 and trundled it across to Jita to sell it.
Can you guess what happened next?
I had a few shield resistance amps on the indy, and a med extender, but that doesn't hold off the siege launchers of a suicide raven piloted by a three year old player for long.
350 million isk and 3 and a half months labour down the drain in around 7 or 8 seconds.
I have 16m isk now, and anything remotely 'cool' that was in my hangars is either on the market or escrow.

Bring it in a battleship fitted with MWD and nano's or a tech 2 indy. The only thing that can stop you then would be a fleet of suicide battleships.

So yes, ISK is VERY important in EVE in my honest, if noobish, opinion.
i still say that isk isnt everything. sure it helps but its not everything. i am one of those wealthy ones with hundred of billions in isk/assets but i would trade everything i have if i could get that feeling i had the first time i undocked my noob ship and warped or when i travelled 80(40 jumps one way, no shuttles back then) jumps to get my first omen @ 5,5m(which was a lot of isk back then) or when i was the first in my corp(and probably one of the first 50-100 in eve) to get a battleship.
i still had more fun without the isk then i do with the isk. i have an old eve mate who just came back to eve with a new char after being away for 2 years. even if he doesnt have any isk or skills he enjoys the game more then ever even if he make crappy isk from doing lvl 2/3 missions
so again: dont get hanged up about how much isk everyone and his mother have. just try and enjoy the game as long and as much as u can
Good point WhiskeyDP, my enjoyment of the game is not tied to my ability to (or lack thereof) generate ISK, my enjoyment is tied to something more basic, more primal....
EVE Online is the ONLY game that has ever been created that actually makes me feel like I am really in the pod, and flying my ship; no other MMOG, or any other game, has ever lived up to that standard. For this reason, I stay with the game....even if I really am horrible in certain aspects of the game LOL ______________________________________________ Gardavil
