Hi there,
I am Theyla, this is my first post here... :-)
I have a problem to share: my ship, a destroyer does not have any missile hardpoints, so I cannot use deffensive missiles to protect my ship against incoming missiles. I can use a tracking distruptor to fool the missiles, but which one should I use? Also, is there any other way to defend myself against these beasties?
Hugs,
Theyla

Tracking disruptors dont work vs missiles sadly, there is no way. ---------------------------

Defender missiles are mostly a wash anyway. They don't work at all unless you're dealing with torps at long range, where you need to fire a bunch of defenders at them to do anything.
Best bets are tanking it. Second best is to jam the ship. But destroyers do both rather poorly

Edited by: Aaewen Hrothgarson on 28/05/2006 11:34:10 Missles did hurt my catalyst too. I turned from shied tanking to armor tanking because of this.
You just have to take the beating, but two things you can do to ease this:
a) Read the tanking guide! b) Increase your (fitting) skills, esp. in mechanics ;)
Modules you should have a look at: Small armor repairers, damage control, shielding plates, hardeners and armor plates (50, 100 for the destroyers).

It's true, missiles are about the worst thing that can happen to a catalyst- which is why you cannot do level 2 missions with them reliably.
What you might try is fit a smartbomb (or two?) in your highslots, and use those to try and take out the missiles with those. I haven't tried a setup like that myself though, so I am not sure if your cpu and grid will be able to handle that. But might as well give it a go

I did try this and I have to say - it really didnt seem to work much at all. You'll burn plenty of cap trying though.
Has anyone out there actually had success with this technique?

My destroyer feared missles.
I tried to tank as best I could....
Problem is more managable when you are in a cruiser. Still no defense other than jamming and armor tanking though.

Missile Defence Options, in order that I belive is most effective.
1. Stay out of missile range. (effective at low levels) 2. Tank vrs the Missile type (If NPC) 3. Jam the unit so they cant fire 4. Use Defender Missiles 5. Use Smart Bombs (somewhat effective with practice) 6. Kill them before they kill you. ;)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the kind help. Your answers confirmed my fears, but I will put your advice to good use! :-) (Will write later to tell about the results...)

Another good defence vs missiles is to make sure you are moving as fast as possible away from them. This doesn't stop them but minimises the damage somewhat.
Moving fast is always a good way to reduce the amount of damage missiles can do to you and is very effective for frigates and such that can quite easily be just a memory after one volley from a missile frigate. With tanking and an AB, I have survived two volleys from a kessie in an Executioner and still got away without losing any hull. My armour looked a bit shabby though

In my experience, best way to avoid being ripped to pieces by missile in a catalyst is to deal as much damage as possible on the ship launching them. Honnestly, I've tried armor tanking a catalyst, looked good but it didn't save me. Next time I fit one i'll try to enhance range and stay far, far away.
