I know this may not work for anyone having constant, seemingly random crashes.
After going through all the standard "fixes", like disabling sound, upgrading/downgrading video drivers, reinstalling Windows, etc. Also, after diagnosing every piece of hardware on my machine (memtest, checking for overheating of the CPU and GPU) and so on..
So finally It occured to me to lower the bus speed on my 400MHz DDR memory, from 200 to 133. That did the trick completely.
Now the RAM I have is NOT damaged/defective/whatever. My suspicion is that the way EVE tries to access memory does not agree with my specific hardware mix.
So, just so you know, this is my setup:
Motherboard: MSI K8T-F Version 2 (VIA K8T800 Pro chipset) RAM: 2 x 512MB Crucial PC3200 DDR memory modules Video: Leadtek Winfast 6800GT 256MB (nVidia) CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Cheers all and hope this helps somebody.
P.S. CCP Should try to diagnose this with my crash dumps so I don't have to lower my RAM speed.

CPU = AMD A64 3000+ venice core Vidcard = Nvidia 6800GT Soundcard = Audigy 2 RAM = 4 x 512 mb Kingston Valueram sticks
Hope the devs will be able to solve the problem with this newfound information!

There is only one way to access memory. It's precisely defined by the RAM manufacturer and implemented by the motherboard and CPU. It either works as it should or it's deffective.
In your case dropping the speed appears to have cured the problem so now you know. Either your RAM is deffective or it's installed wrong. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Well, I lowered the speed on my RAM and after playing for half an hour it seems EVE is now completely stable. Lovely, altough I'd prefer if it were stable at full memory speeds.

How he knows if his ram isn't damaged?? Well read again. He tryed the memtest so maybe that's how he knows. |

I have the abit av8, and have only started to experience random crashes after I updated my nVidia (6800 vanilla) driver from 77.?. I only used that driver to get star wars jedi knights to work. As soon as I changed it, the client kept popping every 5 minutes. Changing to the 81.95 drivers helped a little, but clearing all the game logs helped quite a bit.
I still have a problem though, which I didn't experience for 6 weeks until I changed the driver.

Some advice: Stay away fron Via chipsets! They are awful! I had a P4 based Via chipset (PM800)and had nothing but problems with many aspects of that chipset. I switched to the Nforce 4 chipset and have had no problems at all since switching. I will never buy Via again!
My setup AMD 64 3000+ (E3) Asus A8N5X 939 Motherboard 1 Gig Corsair Valueselect RAM PC3200 Radeon X800 GTO2 (soon) 2 120 Gig Maxtor Sata Harddrives

Well, first option would be to buy all PC3200 DDR modules, preferably same manufacturer.
If not, make sure you set your RAM speed in your BIOS to 133Mhz (please someone confirm that PC2700 is DDR-266, please) Either way, set your RAM speed to 1/2 of the DDR speed your RAM has printed on it.

Well, I tested it thoroughly with Memtest86, and the computer is ROCK SOLID under other, totally more resource-intensive games, such as HL2, BF2, BFV, SW:Battlegrounds, etc. And I do have over 10 years of experience building PCs, so I would know the signs of broken RAM.

Well, actually no. Maybe I used the wrong words. It's the way you tell the OS to write/read from RAM. Since most of my crashes happened when, for example, I approached a station, or when I entered a new system, or when I clicked on something, my gut-feeling is that crashes came when the program tried to write new information into RAM.

duly noted ... the motherboard I'm using is new. The previous one (same chipset, same MSI series) commited suicide when I connected a USB device into one of the forward ports.

I tried moving back to the 77.72 driver, but that didnt quite sort it, however the 78.01 has had me running rock-solid.
