It surely is bright, we're running around screaming in the office after seeing the new charts from SirBruce.

He's got a hell of a lot of data points for that graph, much more than any other game listed. Almost looks like someone's given him a complete month-by-month breakdown...?
Also gotta say, that curve from July 05 onwards is frikkin' impressive. It's not massive in absolute terms but it's comparatively mind-blowing

I rather eve goes relative slowly forward. The resent hardware upgrades have not delivered the performance I think most of us had hoped for.

Yeah, but that many that frequently? Could be, I guess, but it seems an awful lot.

Man, I call shenanigans on even those numbers. I have not met anyone who likes the new SWG. They have to be below 100k subs now.

Final Fantasy XI is, well, Final Frackin' Fantasy. The Square Juggernaut is basically to Japan what Blizzard is to the US, MMO-wise.
Runescape is free, so they're counting all the teenaged free-players in with those players. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

I work at a very large electronics store. I burned my favorite EVE videos onto a DVD and have been playing them from open to close in our projectors section of the store. I frequent the area as it is my section (video cards and projectors) and have given out *checks hotmail about 7 14-day trials in the last 3 days to customers and co-workers. How many of these people are actually taking advantage of the free 14 days I have no idea, but at least the name is getting out there.
Also, I have noticed (as have some of my friends) that before we had NEVER heard of EVE. I mean NEVER even knew what it was. Now, when we mention it people say "ahhh I've heard EVE is an awesome game, do you play?" and we reply with the whole salesman spiel on how they have to leave WOW because its teh ghey and how they need to play EVE instead because it owns. It seems that in the last few months *somehow* the EVE name has penetrated previous barriers.
Congrats to CCP and their creation. Its on the rise, and has serious potential to become one of the most popular MMO's in the next few years.
This is a game that grows on people, sure its not for everyone, but no game is. I do think that the way in which EVE is setup has pulled the most intelligent gamers together. Thats just how I feel.
I have no sig, because I can't compress my picture down that far. It looks like crapola. |

1) SWG this month had a come back for free and get a free NPC char upgrade, sorta nonsense. I'm guessing those numbers were inflated with that:P
2) I've had multiple accounts in nearly every game I've played ( I have 2 here), so I'd say we're hitting average.
3) After I quit SWG I was looking for a new game to play. I found Eve after I did a search on gamespot, for MMO's. I tried out a couple, then saw the eve thingy I decided to try it, since it had ****poor reviews from obvious leet types
4) I had never heard of the game before that. This is obviously a word-of-mouth game for now. If it can do this well without advertising, just imagine... I found ATITD the same way, and that satisfies my carebear/socialist/communist side just fine:) ( You can ban a player with a community petition )
5) Please Devs, can we have more PvP?? :) I hear we're getting that with Kali....

I've got no idea how they've managed to only drop 1/3rd of the subscriptions for their peak. I quit a while before the 'new game experience' or whatever they called it, it was obvious long before that that the game was only getting worse. The best time in swg was the first few months after launch, before everyone realised that buffs made yo about 100% more effective.

Oveur, Are there any plans for a new marketing campaign in the US? I would especially love to be able to buy an original/new boxed set of EVE just to put on the shelf.
I came from EnB over 2 years ago to EVE. If it wasnt for an EnB mate I would have never known about EVE. Here in the US we never read anything about EVE. Was the original boxed set ever even sold in the US?
I did a test: I went to the local CompUSA (Im from Ohio). I walked over to the games section. After a couple minutes one of their employees came over and I asked him if they sold EVE (knowing that they didnt). His response was that EVE closed down a few years ago and that I should really try WoW. I informed him that EVE is alive and kicking and that if he ever gets bored chasing hobgoblins around to try a mans game like EVE
I know that the majority of us have found the game through friends or from internet articles, but having a good looking box setting on a stores shelf would definitely help sell some more accounts. The EVE box would be one of the few out there where the graphics on the box dont have to be all faked to draw people into the game.
Another idea could be to make a demo CD with some of the cool trailers. Have that CD dispersed through various gaming magazines.

I know every Eve player would want to see Eve succeed, and as an upcoming subscribing playing I'd like that too, but why the hate towards competing products? It's not just Eve, of course. Rabid packs of haters attack competing products all the time, and I just don't understand the need. Personally, I'll keep playing both Eve and World of Warcraft for a while longer, as I go to Warcraft purely for the fantastic PvE.

Its worth remembering that WoW is pretty much the 'starter' MMO. A lot of people discover WoW and then move on to a MMO that suits them better, so its not suprising that they have the biggest market share, and in fact that the rest together are around the same size as WoW assuming that people find and move on.
Go eve. We rock.

I think WoW is going to start burning itself out pretty soon.
It really already has. Everyone I know that plays WOW (a lot, since I'm on a college campus) has already quit. I also spend a lot of time at the MMORPG.COM forums and I can say that many (could I go so far as 'most'?) feel that WOW has already given them all it could ever offer. WOW is still going up simply because of their marketing and that new people are always signing up. Their upcoming expansion must really impress in order for them to keep this current trend. Otherwise, I foresee WOW subscriptions taking a big dive in about 4-6 months, once Summer is over and all these newer MMOs finally get released.
Given the fact that the existing playerbase for WoW is so massive, does it not make sense that the sheer volume of "I quit" threads must be staggering by comparison to, say, EVE?
Personally, I love EVE and I hate WoW, but I don't see the latter losing too much steam any time soon. :)
I do not see World of Warcraft anywhere close to "dying", if anything the Burning Crusade will cause a lot of reactivations just to check out the new stuff (I know I will).
But the industry still awaits some real number from Blizzard, since in economic terms they are the market leader, so stuff like churn, retention from trials (if applicable), average subscriber life, reactivations etc. from them would at the very least establish some form of baseline to compare with.
The thing is, all the MMO's work on different principles. Some try to get fewer customers that stay longer while at the other end you have a throughput model where you fuel revenue by constantly addding more subscribers which don't stay long.
The jury is still out, the former model means you are more vulnerable to fluctuations due to the smaller customer base while the second should inevitably run into customer acquisition cost surpassing the total revenue gained from said customer. And of course, we have a lot there somewhere in between in addition to new models such as free-play and RMT based MMO's.
Uhm, sorry for getting all businessy on you so early in the morning. If I would be wearing a tie, I'm sure it would be pointing upwards right now
You play WoW?! BAH!! What a noob!
