The website MMOGCHART.COM has finally been updated again, with some interesting results.
EVE-Online is now featured in the 100,000 - 700,000 subscriber range chart, soon to overtake DAoC and UO. In fact, it is also now on the 120,000+ chart!
It is also one of only a hand full of games that have experienced an continuously increasing subscription rate.
The future of EVE looks bright... in other news, Oveur is probably drunk right now.

Here's the summary for Eve-Online:
Eve Online (Accuracy Rating: A)
Eve Online has been a real quiet success story since their launch in May 2003, starting out small and slowly building more and more subscribers, with almost no competition in the market for its particular brand of sci-fi space simulation. As of May 2006, Eve has 121,156 subscribers. http://www.eve-online.com/

I was going to say...
EVE has drawn even with the game that largely inspired its creation and with one of our largest competitors in the "PvP MMO" market.
EVE can no longer be called "biggest of the small". We are fast becoming the smallest of the large.
And we haven't even added China yet.

The rest of this year is going to rock. -------------- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?

Really glad that the author finally updated his chart. Even moreso to see how popular Eve-Online is becoming.
I think WoW is going to start burning itself out pretty soon. ___________________

It really already has. Everyone I know that plays WOW (a lot, since I'm on a college campus) has already quit. I also spend a lot of time at the MMORPG.COM forums and I can say that many (could I go so far as 'most'?) feel that WOW has already given them all it could ever offer. WOW is still going up simply because of their marketing and that new people are always signing up. Their upcoming expansion must really impress in order for them to keep this current trend. Otherwise, I foresee WOW subscriptions taking a big dive in about 4-6 months, once Summer is over and all these newer MMOs finally get released.

Given the fact that the existing playerbase for WoW is so massive, does it not make sense that the sheer volume of "I quit" threads must be staggering by comparison to, say, EVE?
Personally, I love EVE and I hate WoW, but I don't see the latter losing too much steam any time soon. :)

I have to agree with Valeo Galaem on one point, is that people are leaving WoW for greener pastures because they got what they wanted and are bored of it now. I think people are just waiting around until The Next Big Thing hits. ___________________

The EVE graph is definitely looking good, particularly the way it's picking up growth rate . That said, WoW gains/loses more people in a busy week than EVE's entire playerbase. So there's success and then there's success. But EVE's climbing in the rankings. The really interesting question would be how big niche is EVE filling?

Good info and good news :)
Since I started playing a few weeks ago I've been trying to get friends to try EVE and away from games like DAoC and WoW

I think the most important thing to keep in mind here is the exponentiality factor we're looking at for EVE. For every EVE player, let's say they tell 10 friends about EVE, let's say only 5 of them actually try it. Well, even if at least 2 of those 5 that tried it fall in love with EVE and tell all THEIR friends...
Boom. You have exponential growth. For every EVE player they convince 2 of their friends to also play EVE, and two of their friends etc, etc.
I'd also contend that because EVE is of such high quality, more of the people who 'try it out' become hooked compared to other MMO's or other games in general, and fewer of those who are hooked, ever quit (or if they do, they always come back, because they can't find anything like EVE out there)
So EVE's numbers will only continue to skyrocket. With EVE, it appears that a "critical mass" effect is taking place. With enough subscribers, CCP can afford advertisements on dozens (if not hundreds?) of popular websites (including Penny Arcade for one...)
That, in conjunction with the fact that word of mouth is probably EVE's main strength...
I have to mention an incident I had when playing Dystopia (a cyberpunk conversion for HL2). I mentioned to my friend in the server that I was going to play EVE Online, and suddenly a half dozen people piped up "you play EVE too?" And before I knew it we basically convinced the entire server to at least try out the 14 day trial with our enthusiasm describing our lives in EVE and the best parts of it.
I'm really hoping what I've said is at least partially true... if it is.. EVE should be seeing a lot more people in the coming months.

Yes, but you have to consider that while probably almost every gamer with a fast internet connection will try WoW, alot of them will get tired of it fast. I wouldnt recommend anyone looking for good pvp to even try that game. Its very much paper-rock-scissors, while in Eve its very possible to win fights you are not "supposed" to by playing it smart.
Wow will remain the best pve game where you can fight computer controlled mobs together with your friends. If you want good pvp that means something, you want Eve.
It is said that alot of older players get attracted to the hardcore pvp in Eve because they are tired of fighting npc bots like in any other game. I think this is true, and with time alot of players will learn to appriciate games like Eve, where your actions has consequences and a meaning.

To those saying that wow is dying out:
Burning crusade comes out in a few months, you'll see them increase their current subs by quite a large amount. But who cares, that's wow, it will be the big dog of the pound for a long time, but Eve is that little dog over in the corner with a gleam in it's eye showing you he's hungry, and every dog has it's day so they say :) ----- Lighten up a little bit. It's only the end of the world. |

Divide current subscriber figures by 3 to get the actual number of people who play Eve given how rampant second and third accounts appear to be compared to any other MMOG I've played ;)

I do not see World of Warcraft anywhere close to "dying", if anything the Burning Crusade will cause a lot of reactivations just to check out the new stuff (I know I will).
But the industry still awaits some real number from Blizzard, since in economic terms they are the market leader, so stuff like churn, retention from trials (if applicable), average subscriber life, reactivations etc. from them would at the very least establish some form of baseline to compare with.
The thing is, all the MMO's work on different principles. Some try to get fewer customers that stay longer while at the other end you have a throughput model where you fuel revenue by constantly addding more subscribers which don't stay long.
The jury is still out, the former model means you are more vulnerable to fluctuations due to the smaller customer base while the second should inevitably run into customer acquisition cost surpassing the total revenue gained from said customer. And of course, we have a lot there somewhere in between in addition to new models such as free-play and RMT based MMO's.
Uhm, sorry for getting all businessy on you so early in the morning. If I would be wearing a tie, I'm sure it would be pointing upwards right now

Actually, it's not as common as you think and in our recent war story swappings, we're not that much above industry average.

It's probably only because I know so many people with second accounts personally in Eve where I've never known anybody with them in any other MMOG.
Heck I have one myself.
