Reading through the ship setups I found a Ferox T2 setup which gave a range of 245km.
Now I worked out the cost of the setup and the required skills. For a T2 setup I would need to train 35 days - for the equivilant T1 setup I would need to train about 10days... big difference in time.
However - using the Item Database Ive compared all the items and I do not see that big a differrence in the specifications of the items.
For example the difference between T1 - T2 250mm Railgun: T1 optimal range 24km T2 optimal range 29km T1 dmg mod 2.75 T2 dmg mod 3.3 T1 tracking speed 0.023 T2 tracking speed 0.025
Now except the CPU usage everything else is the same spec!! So why is T2 railgun better?? Specification wise it doesnt look THAT much better!
Only thing I can think of is that by the time you get the skills to be able to use a T2 250mm Railgun - your skills increase everything anyways??
Is this right - or have I missed something?
thanks

the t2 specialization skill adds 2% damage to t2 turrets ONLY per lvl.

Originally by: Blind Man the t2 specialization skill adds 2% damage to t2 turrets ONLY per lvl.
so that means that it is the extra required t2 skills that really improve the t2 equipment then?

If you can fit it, T2 is better for several reasons:
-Cheaper (I'm referring to the best named counterpart here.) -Availability (Try finding 7 425mm Prototype railguns and compare that to finding T2 425mm's.) -Concerning turrets and launchers: You can use T2 ammo. -You benefit from the specialization skill. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

20% extra damage is quite a lot. On a cruiser it's the equivalent of having one extra gun that doesn't take any cap or ammo to fire. Not only that but it makes your ship and skill damage bonuses bigger as well.
As to whether t2 is necessary...it depends. For pve, no. It'll make you kill stuff faster, so you'll make more money, but it's not required. For large gang pvp, again, no. You're one of many, so the difference between you having t1 and t2 weapons does not have that great an effect on your gang's total dps.
However, for solo and small gang pvp, t2 (or good named gear) is vital, because everyone else will have it. If the fights are at all even shipwise, the side with more t2 gear will defeat the side with t1 gear. EVE combat is about getting as many little advantages over your opponent as possible, and as far as little advantages go, 20% extra damage is a BIG advantage.

There are many t2 items that are not better than the best named.
Weapons are different because of the skill bonus.
Other things you need to compare the stats.

I did a blasterthron vs blasterthron on Sisi the other day, both ships at optimal and standing still. When the fight was over, the surviving ship had like 1000 structure left, so if you combine hit points for struct, armor, shield, armor repaired and resistances, thats prolly less then 5% (cba to run calc on all that).
So 20% is indeed a lot.

T2 PDS = T2 BCS = T2 Hardeners = T2 Shield Extenders = T2 Shield Boosters =
Too bad I can't fit all that,

I find that T2 items just make you smile, like look at the T1 shield extender then look at the T2...theres about a 600 (guessing, i forget because im not in the game) but its either 600 or 800 shield HP bonus. Every time I slap one of those things on i grin insanely big.
