Edited by: Skywalker on 30/05/2006 22:31:07 My goal was to buy me a Naglfar before MAFIA had it's 3year birthday. Just a few days before the birthday i managed to get a bargain deal and found myself in a Naglfar with all the juicy equipment needed.
As i had seen no pirates using a dread as a pirate ship, i felt like a was on something new and that was really exciting. I wasn't sure in what way i would use it to pirate but after doing a bit of experimenting i figured that station camping would be perfect for this.
So my idea was to fit fast locking, dual webbers and a warp disruptor. That way i could catch people undocking and docking. Hold them down with dual webbers, disruptor and a Heavy cap drainer so they couldn't active the mwd.
This tactic worked really good since tanking a station was like having a velator shooting at a battleship. I would be able to hold down battleships while killing them slowly even if i wasn't in siege mode to get the extra 600% dmg output needed.
After the agression i had 60sec to dock if any troubles showed up. So far so good.
There is one weakness that i was well aware of that also got me killed in the end.
If i went into siege mode i would have to sit for 10min without being able to move or dock.
This is what happend, i was sitting flagged outside a station in amamake, when a smaller blob arrived. Since i figured they where a managable number of hostiles, i decided to go into siege mode. After a short while their backup showed up, it was unexpected but i knew i was taking a risk going into siege mode. After 5 min of fighting i lost my ship.
My observations: Using a dread without any support is risky, since you need 2-3 target painters, and at least 2 webifiers to be able to get decent hits with the torpedos. But i can assure you that it is great fun.
An good fitting for pirate activites like this with a Naglfar would be:
High: 1xAutocannon, 2x Citadel Launcher, 1 Best named cap drainer Meds: 2x 25km+ webifiers, 1 x 30km disruptor, 2 sensor boosters II Low: 2x Capital Repairers, Hardeners or (hardeners+cap relays)
Of course you can fit it to tank better, have a stronger cap etc, but that wont take you anywhere as a solo pirate.
As a last thing i would like to congratulate Ushra K for bringing my down, i managed to save my pod probably to all the corpses that was scattered after the explosion ;)
- I hope this will be a inspiration for other pirates, and hopefully there will be some nice replies about other ways to use a dread for pirating.

I'm pretty sure you can dock from siege mode once aggression wears off, a capital ship expert can correct me if I'm wrong though ¼_¼.

you're right, but of course if you go into siege mode when you're more than 0km away from the station you won't be able to move within docking range without a friendly bump.

It says he died five minutes into siege mode, he would have needed to survive annother five to dock.

No, he'd have needed to survive another five to leave siege mode. He'd have needed to survive 60 seconds after de-activating weapons, to dock. As far as I know, anyway.

Edited by: Skywalker on 30/05/2006 23:17:29 Here is a movie that Maelstrom Alliance sent me after they attacked me in Amamake a few days ago. It was basically the same scenario, although those guys didn't bring in the backup fleet, so i could't trick them abit. First i let them take down my armor totally, and the second after i instarepaired all my armor. This was done to make them stay and not run.
Hope this can be a teaser for you pirates out there

Edited by: Lopika on 30/05/2006 23:37:40 Hey,
Was me in the rax in the video btw. We were getting quite excited when we got you to structure but then once i saw you double rep it was quite obvious that you were just teasing us
Still it was a fun fight, just a shame we didnt warp the 50 man fleet in on you that we left in 0.0.

EDIT - grr why does it always default to the alt

That was a great fight, next time I'll keep my domi outside 10km so you can't dual-web me. --

As of not too long ago you could most deffo dock in siege mode if in dock range.
On a gameplay level I'm glad you lost it so quickly, hopefully it will discourage others from doing something with their "I win - no repurcussions" ships.
I also hope they fix the bit where you can dock in siege mode. Cap ships imo need a longer aggro timer to stop just this.
Finally, grats to the UK

Was great fun :)
Funny thing is that we weren't even there for Skywalker. We had a gang togeather that had gotten bored with the pirates in our system. They would sit at dockrange in bs's and do nothing but tank dmg till they went into armor/struct and then would dock. So we decieded to head back to our old stomping grounds to see what we could see.
Got to... Odatrik i think it was, and had a scout in amamake that told us that skywalker was there and there was a mega there supporting. We send in a smaller force to kill the mega and hopfully draw the attention of the Dread. Worked well, dread attacked one of our frig's (that wasn't moving, bad move on his part) and then the rest of the fleet jumped into amamake and warped to the station. We engaged the dread and were waiting for more support to come in to help him, but none did. Think the sheilds were already down from sentry fire, so we proceded to TP, web and warp scramble the dread. Skywalkers mistake was he activated seige mode a litte late i think (by that I mean i had already done some cycles on the tp and web's and then he activated the seige mode.)
We eventaully took him down to almost no armor then suddenly his armor was back up to pretty much full agian. He tanked pretty well, but we ended up killing him.
Was a great day, especially after a large battle we had with hostiles the day before where we killed many war targets.
p.s. All feel bad for BoneEater... He followed us all the way up, but when we warped to ossogur his GF called so he went afk. Came back just intime for the Boom :) shoulda seen what he posted, lol :)
But GF Skywalker, and cheers for not complaining about the trap. Good fun :)
I have returned.

I'm impressed that you did this in a naglfar, of all ships. Did you have a plan for what you were going to to if someone got out of web range and became impossible to hit? I'd think you could do this in a moros what with the drones and all but a naglfar, you have *******, son. Sounds like fun pirating in a dread but isnt that an awfully expensive loss? Or is there insurance for that?

Was a good job by UK. We had maybe 10 BS only 1-2 jumps away and 5 just about to jump in but couldn't get into amamake in time.
BIG kudos to skywalker for having the guts to stand and fight in such a expensive ship. I'm sure there will be more PC dreads in the very near future

Nice to see a Dread being used for pirate purposes, especially camping!
Cred to you Skywalker for having money and frame of mind to use this ship in this way, shame your support was further away though, unlucky on that one guys.
Nice movie aswell

If you want to pirate in a dread go ransom some POS. There are plenty of lightly defended POS in empire. I know of one pirate corp that is currently doing this.

I was reading the killboards after duff told me about you pirating in a dread, I am impressed.
Shame you lost it though, I blame the slackers in Egg for not getting to you quick enough.
Out of interest, as I'm too new to be dealing with dreads - in theory, would a Moros be far superior in terms of camping? I hear the drones alone can do some serious dps.

Possibly, but the sentry guns will take them out before they have time to kill a battleship. Pheonix might be good as it has more missile slots, but really once its in siege mode its not going to hit anything for much damage unless its double webbed and painted.
