Hi there,
So I have been pondering a bit of pirating. Seems in my travels a nice vulnerable spot for haulers is coming and going from station. So I was thinking - sit outside a station in a rifter or a wolf or even a cloaked bomber and wait for the 'customer' to come to the station at 15km or try and snag him freaking out coming out of the station. Before I go writing off ships to sentry guns in low sec, how long will a normal frig like a rifter or a bomber or a t2 frig last vs those sentries as I try to get the guy?
And post the redistribution of assets, I was thinking log off in the pirate ship and then grab my alt conveniently in the station to come out in a hauler to grab the loots!
What do you think? |

Rifter would not be able to survive any amount of time. Niether will the wolf and if you use a Bomber that will cost alot and unless you know they are carring something really good would most likely mean no profit and heavy losses and not garanteed kill. A Battlecruiser with a heavy tank might be able to last a couple minutes but not very long then warp out.
I would suggest holding off on this kind of tactic till atleast you can use a battlecruiser fairly well. But thats just my opinion

The above poster is right.In my experience at least the smallest ship class that can remotley effectivley hold out against Sentrys,at least long enough to make a decent kill.Is a BC,but you better have a good tank w/ better skills and be pre aligned to a warp out point to maximize your chances of a successfull sentry range gank by yourself.

A well tanked Maller can kill a badly fitted hauler under sentry fire. However I aint a Minnie pilot so couldn't comment on your cruisers pulling it off... but my guesse would be no.
Wait untill you can fly a Battlecruiser with reasonable skills. Theyre perfect for low risk pirating, if you kit them up with tech I you lose allmost nothing should they go bang, and my Proph can tank for a lil over 3 minutes

Even my 7k armor maller with hardeners against sentry damage only could stand sentry fire for about a minute (little more I guess, couldn't really take the time)... problem is the looting part in there.

I tried with a rupture and it is possible but very close. Use 1600mm plate setup, unfortunately it is impossible to fit large armor repairer's so i think you would lose it quite often, or miss haulers
Move up to cyclone and it gets a lot easier - 2 invul fields, large extender, large booster and you can tank sentries for a while

I've tried doing haulers on two ocassions at low sec gates in a Vexor each time, I managed to kill the hauler fine, but I popped at the same time just as I tried to warp. It was a standard solo Vexor setup though, so perhaps customised for this role it could manage it, but I'd say a Battlecruiser is your best bet.

ive killed haulers under sentry fire with my caracal . you need to be warp aligned and have decent skills. but you dont need a bc to kill outside the station thats for sure

Well the part about the AF aint true. They can tank sentries at least as long as it takes to smoke the hauler. I once tried that accidently in a retribution. I decided to warp out not before tanking them for maybe 30 seconds. That's way enough time.
But i should mention: if you're getting webbed upon this you're dead.

Keep in mind that the number of sentries at gates varies. I think it's either 2 or 4.
