A small thread from a MMORPG addict who just sees something that happens everytime
i got err close to 10 years old of MMMORPG game addiction (sorry nobody is perfect :( )
let's see what i ALWAYS saw... in UO, in Asheron's Call, in Anarchy Online and in Eve: the Minmatar love we start to see on dev notes :
>dev1(the one who plays) : guys really they whine a lot, but this "long term investment race" doesnt pay off. those guys are gimps till they played 2 years...
>dev team : ok... let's give them some sweets
>dev 1 : guys.... giving them candy to hook to their ship/house/character sure looks nice, but didnt help
>dev 3(the one with the boostbat (opposite of nerfbat) : ok
> dev team : wait wait, in our original plans those were supposed to be the long term guys, those who have "uberness" after one year of playing
>dev 1+team : guys sorry, but we have to "balance". the next 12 patches will be minmatar love.the average player is 2 months old, they have to get hooked and get some love
i'm one of those who have a caldari and minmatar characters... caldari has it so easy at the first run. then it sucks.... well it doesnt exactly sucks but it's freaking boring. Minmatar is action, is difficulty and fun. i'm still a newbie in Eve, but i clearly see a common thing there.... i made my main Minmatar just for this exact reason :D
The corollary (spelling?) of this is, please devs dont go in cheap fixes, even if alllll a race complains (alllllll means : all the vocal ones, you will never hear about the happy ones grinding for the 'future uberness')
And last :
When the faction war starts i really feel sorry for all the Food
(Food : When there is no chicken left for dinner. in a few words : Caldari, Gallente, Amarr)

I'm Caldari, but fly in Minmatar space, and run Republic Navy missions. Last night I was clicking around checking my standing with other corps and factions. Now, after a few months of running missions, my Republic Fleet is up to 8.5, and general Minmatar faction is at 2.85.
Well, if you click on the standing tab for Minmatar faction, you'll see under 'Likes - Factions', they have a 2.5(Fine) standing to Jove. Hmm, Jove like Minmatar, I wonder what my standing is to them? Sure enough I'm at 1.8 with Jove, and checking the transactions, every 'Important Mission' I run for Minmatar, I get a positive derivided modification boost to Jove also (Level 3's are giving me a 1.5% boost each). So, a little more love for Minmatar runners when Jove opens up  . BTW, Jove do not like Amarr(-.5) or Gallente (-.25) so if you run missions for them, you might be in trouble later on. YMMV.

So you are saying that the day will come when minmatar are the FOTM?
Guess it will some day, it happens to everyone in the end. My alt is a minmatar pilot (though he is a caldari bloodline). I started him because minmatar are cool, and they are hard. I honestly don't want his ships and his style to become FOTM, and my fighting just a clone of everyone else in fairly similar setups doing the same thing.
I'm happy on the edge.

Answer to topic question: because a) minmatar ships are generally accepted as ugly, b) minmatar are described as slaves (and no one want that) and c) Caldari are so uber that all power gamers choose Caldari and go to other races from there.
Actually, I also think that there's quite a bit to do with how the races are described. When playing a game where you only control yourself, the race(s) which are described as solo warriors (key words: few, militaristic, advanced, high-tech) tend to become favourite. This is exactly how Caldari are described, and lo and behold Caldari are in vast majority.
On the other hand, those described as groups, or born underdogs (this is read as born weak, as opposed to the glorified description of the Caldari), become less attractive. This is primarily Minmatar, but also slightly Gallente. With Gallente, though, the extravagant and exagregated individualism it affords will always attract people.
This is actually regardless of whether you're an RPer or not. It's good to tell a Minmatar he's a lowly slave, because that's how they are described.

Because they SUCK at prolonged battles. The minmatar "style" is geared towards first-strike and then running like hell.

minnies are cool looking race. Probably the best in eve in that category. BUT, they have challenges and require patience to develop(heh, have you ever heard "they su.ck to start" put more diplomatically?)

I dont get your point... If everyone was minmatar and flew minmatar ships the game would suck much*****.
People fly what they like to fly, i fly everything but minnie ships. That versatility beats any bonuses you can get from being minmatar only. :)

I'm pretty sure that the chronicles have the Minmatar as the most numerous in the galaxy but we are the fewest in the game.
Why?
I think Minamatar ships as a whole do look fragile and have that dark brown pallete to most of them. I like them but I would guess the vast majority would not. Our female avatars look pretty bad too. And our ships are not the easiest to train for.
I picked Minmatar because I liked the description. I envisioned some great RP possibilities.

I chose Minmatar because I could tell from the racial descriptions that they would be the least popular. I also found their story interesting, although Im not an RP'er.
As for Caldari, I refuse to fly any of their ships and I would never make a Caldari character, simply because of the notion that Caldari = 1337. FOTM or year or forever .. whatever

I like gallente.
I was gonna go pick up other ships, but I figure with a dominix drone solo pwn boat, a megathron sniper, and pretty soon that tier 3 BS blasterboat, will be enough variety for me to mess around with, and make it well worth gallente BS 5.

I chose minmatar for quite a few reasons:
1) I liked the look and attributes of Brutor. I could've gone for a Caldari combat character but they all look stupid.
2) I've played enough games to know that when people say a certain race is rubbish there are some absolute gems hidden away in it
3) They seemed to mirror my favourite DND class which was the ranger. Not the best armour, not the best offence, but could turn it's hand to anything and was a bit of a solo pwnmobile (something which has since proved true).
It is something I have never regretted, and even now as I've just hit 20m skillpoints I take pleasure in knowing there's easily another 15m I can pump into minmatar to get the most out of all the ships.

why the hell would they do that? the reason eve is so good is that you're not pidgeon-holed into only being allowed to fly certain ships.

I'd just appreciate CCP showing as much love to Gallente as that have to every other race. Even our T3 BS looks like crap! CCP hates us Gallente apparently.

Minmatar = because they are fun
Caldari = because they are easy
Started with Caldari, got bored, switched to minnie, having a blast in pvp. How can anyone NOT like the sound of autocannons and the speedy ships with rebel-red exhaust color?

It's a law of MMOs.
The most desirable thing to the min-maxers is usually the ugliest. In this case, the asymmetrical, blocky lego nightmares the Caldari ships are made of.
Never in any case will it be the ship that looks the coolest.

I kinda chose to be a Mimmatar because the English kinda root for the underdogs.
It's not really like another MMOG where my Dwarf can't swing a Dual Handed Sword of Ra +5. I fly all races ships up to lvl 4 BS apart from Caldari.
And that's only basically cos my missile skills suck and their ships (IMO) are more suited to "cookie cutter" setups (by this I mean if you come across a Raven you are 99% sure it will be loaded out with 6* cruise or 6 * torps) whereas the others can be fitted many different ways.
Even that said, I'll go Caldari / Missiles some day.
Oh yeah, what was I thinking, of course the main reason is our cool looks.
