In the next part of the Bloggers series, Clover previews the 'in development' Professions system, including a new profession and some insight into the importance of Hacking and Archeology.
Enjoy!

any chance of increasing the drop rate of the skills needed to build the cosmos items, they are probably a bit too rare for what they are worth, and most of the items they are used to build suck :p

Yeah, shield is kind of meh. Elemental shields are better, though its rather unbalanced that you can only get 9% from an altar and get 25% from the sigil stones.

nah, CCP have already said they want the skills to be roughly the same as t2. as t3 is simply a progression of the spec, having the skill to 2 seems to be appropriate. Don't forget, we still have T4 and T5 to go (spec 3 and 4?).

Hmm... I'm kinda confused about the whole thing. Its all gonna be complex based? Rather limiting I think, and something to be farmed by those with tons of time, or a place for gankers to sit and wait for an industrial... well, maybe not that part since an industrial player wont be in a complex...
Maybe I missed something... _______________________________________________ I am the devil, and I'm here to do the devils work.

so tech3 will be cosmos grinding?
really cool research you got there...
I doubt the majority of alliance players is happy about grinding stupid plexes for tech3 stuff.
Why not introduce POS modules which can modify tech2 guns to tech3 guns? Every kind of Modification needs a BPO which you can gain when you invest lots of money in a research module at a POS. There wont be a overlfow of tech3 stuff, since the modification will take time, money and needs a tech2 items (which are limited anyway).
The tech3 producing module should be expansive and big, like capital ship arrays. So even bigger alliances cant afford more then 3-5 of them. When you consider that modifying a HAC should take about 12h there wont be a overflow of tech3 ships (very low output of the ships).
But making tech3 grinding, thats bad.

In addition to my first post.
You could also upgrade 0.0 by giving every 0.0 region a special modification type. In Venal you get 425er rails with a bit longer range with shield HP bonus. In Fountain the same Railgun can get modified into a 425er rail with lower range and more damage.
If you think that will make alliances to strong, then you can allow lowsec to get such modifications as well, but not as good.
Like this holding special regions would finally mean something. Holding a Region like Fountain would be deservable and the ability to mantain POSes would be a clear advantage. Also Alliances in special regions would get different flavours. The guys from venal would be better at long range with their tech3 guns, whereas the fountain guys would kickass at shorter ranges.

No, the gathering of knowledge, information, materials, technology - the ingredients - for Tech levels is based on utiliziation of mini-professions. The invention/reverse engineering and manufacturing is something else entirely.
When you get Tux writes about Combat Boosters, you'll get an idea of the whole chain surrounding it. That is for example heavily reliant on Starbase structures.
And any information you have about Tech 3, besides in this blog, which describes the connection between gathering ingredients for all Tech levels, should be ignored completely. It's all rumours and speculation.
Regarding your speculation on ship upgrades, which are a result from Salvaging, I'd suggest you wait for the blog about that, you really aren't that far off with your suggestion, you are simply assuming the worst from the start.
Combat Boosters for example is COSMOS based, so that the ingredients are unique to the region they are in and currently, these regions are 8.
And to answer the inevitable question about COSMOS, it's different depending on where the COSMOS project is being done. In empire, they are heavily agent based, while in 0.0 it's more about unique resources, environments and exploration. COSMOS is simply to paint on the canvas that is the EVE universe.

I have no problem when people like it, but I have a problem if Eve is getting a grind game (allowing people with 24/7 time to play getting huge advantage compared to others).
It will be ok if this gathering is just a way to take little part of it without beeing a major player but honestly, who has fun doing this pseudo hacking? Last time I heard anything about it was when a player laughed in channel how stupid it was. Just train the skill to lvl5, thats all what it needs to be a expert hacker...
COSMOS for me and most other players is just a money grind and a way to exploit game mechanisms to maximize profit (Minmatar cosmos *cough*). Sitting in a carrier and doing the same mission over and over again, only to fail its last part and getting multi billion isk without risk (your sitting at a POS with the carrier of course) is no fun. I admit I have never taken part in any cosmos stuff directly, but reading the right channels gives you the idea about it. It seems like you plan to make 0.0 Cosmos something similar to mining, but with a differen resources. At least no space agents in 0.0, which makes me quite happy (I hated the agent system since it got pushed like hell, killed so many funny parts of this game, including low sec mining, low sec belt hunting, killing the low sec miners and low sec belt hunter).
But please remember, whatever you do, dont make it another afk research (tech2) or grind (missions/empire COSMOS).
Another thing: Salvaging, is it to salvage NPC wrecks, or PC wrecks? First one would be "nahh, boring" later one would be "zomg, finally it makes sense to kill stuff again". I always hoped salvaging would resurrect the art of piracy again and I think I wasnt alone with that hope.
Conclusion: Its nice that you try to make space more shiny, but I would prefer it if you gave players the possiblity to make space and especially 0.0 a better place.
P.S. Change Missions, they ruin low sec (Annacale *cough* sad *cough*) P.P.S. Stop the grinds, they just annoy long time players (although thy make newbies stay for about 1 month longer before leaving again)

But I thought are many min-professions in game already. To name a few:
1. Archeologist
Eve archeologist look like Caldari. He use space advanced exploration vehicle (SAEV) to find, explore and dig the archeological sites. Oh wait... there is nothing to explore and dig, because it's all found and visible already. Rats with nerfed bounties and crappy loot also love those archeological sites. They mate and spawn there like it's a last day of Eve. So, don't forget to fit your favourite launchers and swap SAEV for a Ferox. You will also need to learn an archeology, which is incredibly useful for activating your ubber Analyser module . As name implies, it's used to analyse stuff. Unfortunately, every archeological site consist only of floating garbage and other archeologist's cans filled with crappy loot from the nerfed rats. Within this garbage you will find construction components for your ancient BPC. Oh wait, you do need to grind missions first, because only agents will give you these ancient BPC's... and one time only. But I heard they look pretty good on the hangar walls, instead of corpse and dog tags.
2. Hacker[b]
Dear hackers, you are in the same boat as archeologists, but you need to hack the floating garbage, which is the same as analysing it, but sounds a lot cooler.
[b]3. Tuxwhip
Latest mini-profession which require leadership and advanced writing skills, where you expected start every your sentence with Tux. For example: "Tux look", or "Tux please, or "Tux give", etc. Rewards are somewhat questionable, but risk is also very minimal.

And to answer the inevitable question about COSMOS, it's different depending on where the COSMOS project is being done. In empire, they are heavily agent based, while in 0.0 it's more about unique resources, environments and exploration. COSMOS is simply to paint on the canvas that is the EVE universe.
There are many questions, but I will be incredibly happy if you can find some time and answer some of them:
1) Can you clarify why archeologist require about 5 mil in gunnery ( or missile) skills just to stay alive in the current archeological sites?
2) Why instead of research and exploration ( scanning and finding) archeology involved nothing but shooting rats and mindless opening spawn containers? Should we expect changes there? Like a hidden agents, ancient gates, complexes, abounded old structures, mazes ( like Ekdit Spitek mission), etc?
3) Will you balance high sec COSMOS constellations in terms on content and agent distribution? Currently:
9 Agents for Gallente ( plus 4 Sisters of Eve agents and minus 3 relation improvement agents) 24 Agents for Amarr (minus 3 relation improvement agents) 30 Agents for Minmatar ( minus 3 relation improvement agents) 42 Agents for Caldari ( minus 3 relation improvement agents) *
4) Can we expect to use brains while hacking? Math, puzzles, whatever or it will be mindless codebreaker activations on spawn containers/gates, etc?
5) Are there any plans for exploration/archeologist/hacking specialized ships? If not, are there plans to release mods which allow Cov Ops to use Codebreaker and Analyser while cloaked in the designated areas?
6) Should we expect some of current COSMOS BPC's to be improved to reflect their unique (T3 or whatever) nature? Especially, most of Ani BPC's, which are basically are T1 and sometimes simply basic items.
Thank you Olivin

Did I read that right? Greater rewards for complex farming?
Well, at least you can kill the people within the complex. Well, some of the time, you know, like when the key eventually spawns.

Random stuff
1. New mini-professions sound cool, but will they hopefully be more readily available to Joe Subscriber than COSMOS? The COSMOS modules for the most part suck, and even if you manage to fend off the really-uber-compared-to-reward NPCs in the plexes, you cant do anything with the stuff without an incredibly rare skill (iirc theyre around 500M isk, so for 2 of them you could buy an isk printing press aka t2 bpo). If COSMOS items were really uber this wouldnt be such a problem, but as I said before they sort of suck and hopefully the new mini-profs wont be so restrictive.
2. As Olivin said, both existing and future complexes need a lot of work because right now theyre all basically grinding which gets very old very fast. I too was hoping mini-profs would be more cerebral than 'warp into complex, kill lots of NPCs and grab loot container' so doing well with them requires a bit more than 10 million SP and hours every day to play eve.
3. Tech 3 looks interesting, Im glad to see its not as uber compared to t2 as t2 is to t1. That said Id love to see some penalties attached to them as well ala t2 ammo, i.e. maybe -100HP armor for 250HP shield bonus on that railgun. My chief worry with tech 3 (and beyond) is that it will create the sort of leveling system that makes most all other MMOGs suck.
4. Making boosters go through complexes is a good idea, provided plexes become a bit more interesting than they are now. Not sure what your plans are for making them, but limited-run BPCs should come from plexes too. Boosters seem to me to be a great opportunity to get people who dont have 10 billion isk or get really damn lucky involved in advanced player-based production (and also have a better supply-and-demand model than tech2, which at least with ships seems to be no-supply and demand ). _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

that would be the Terran 400mm Shielded Gravity Cannon III, a 425mm Railgun II that has been modified with a XSL9 Micro Shield Generator :P (i.e. +550 shield hp).

Edited by: SengH on 03/06/2006 19:22:39 :( No love for t2 leadership gang mods or more advanced leadership implants? I dunno I'd hope leadership would be considered a profession kinda now.. esp with the silly amt of SP i have invested in it.

according to the e3 press release, leadership and gang mods are going to be "looked at" in one of the kali patches
they said overhaul of the gang system... introducing sub gangs etc... nothing about new leadership mods ( T1 BCs were supposed to get a leadership upgrade with RMR but that never materialized ).
/emote crosses his fingers hoping they dont nuke everything totally for the next 6 months after they patch kali.

omg am sooo glad for once i had to spell the name differently because the one capitalized correctly and with no '0' was already taken ;.;
re: the 'mini-professions' thing, it'd be nice if someone reviewed their current skill pre-requirements... as lvl.5 in rank 2 skill that you basically only train if you want to fly covert ops... that's hardly a 'mini' requirement to dabble with on the side :|

There are three devs looking at the font since ColdWar and (probably another three) since RMR.
Boosters = Loads of 0.0 toys.
Gangs: Umm, no, nothing new in the gang department. Not a word about improving the gang features. No, not even the formations, nor the tactical stuff had been talked about for quite a while. No, we didn't get a single word on any improvements to the Logsitic pilot's problems.
Mini-Professions: Ah, yes. One day, the fantastic and special mini-professions (hacking, archaeology) will be worth the time I invested in training them. Atm they're just dangerous complex grinding activities with no real point - as interesting as mining.
Well, there will probably be more blogs about the planned changes and additions in the future. We'll be waiting for something more interesting. We wont leave anytime soon. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

*Sigh* another "shoot crap to progress" part of the game, and again scientists and manu peeps have to train gunnery, and pretty much every skill in order to do their job.
Seems like it will be a case of alliances having yet more...if not all access to all the cool new stuff (unless I read it wrong and the complexes aren't going to be in lo sec). Boosters are going to require POS + low sec= CCP's push to get everyone to low sec and join alliances.
Huzzah!
Yes, this is pure speculation but the way it looks atm manu and r&d take another kick to the head, the only aspect of the game I was looking forward to improving takes another dive and I whinge yet again about the sorry state of my once chosen proffesion.
Such a sad state of things where virtually every game on this planet involves killing crap in order to have something akin to fun.

Unless CCP have been lying to us about playing the game all this time, all the devs have been "looking at" the font since Cold war :P
