Hello.
After six years in industry and missions, I am determined to try something new: low sec solo pvp.
Thus far, all that I have been able to accomplish is a series of quick deaths for myself, and lowering my sec status and the funds in my bank account.
My modus operandi thus far: pvp fit an Imicus or an Atron, enter low sec, and enter 'novice sites'. There, I engage a ship, almost instantaneously explode, and sail back to high sec in my pod. Repeat.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey,
Might want to try your hand out in a PVP corporation that accepts noobs. Check the killboards in your area and look through the corp descriptions of the active PVPing corps. You might (probably will) find one that is recruiting and accepts noobs.
The people you are encountering for the most part have been in hundreds of fights, so death followed by death followed by death will continue to be a routine for some time. 
It's just more financially viable for me. |

pretty much what the guy above mentioned....
try a corp in Brave or the alliance Fweddit is in.
PVP is a lot easier to get experienced at when you run in fleets with people who already know what they're doing and bring you along for the ride.
Getting yourself wet with fleets where you're following FC commands will give you the experience you need to eventually explore other types of PVP and be successful at it |

Running with a fleet also let's you see how other players approach fights, and gives you people to ask questions.

Never get disheartened about lossing an atron. I love them but it really is a flip of the coin as to whether or not you will win any engagement. Atrons are like Haitian prostitutes, fast, cheap, and if you get in one you will die! |

Joining Fweddit, RVB or Brave won't help you.
If you want to do Solo PVP, join the ingame channel 'Bringing Solo Back', and perhaps hook up with some of them.
Figure out what your frigate counters, and pick your fights. |

Don't get discouraged. Solo pvp, and solo frigate PvP in particular is about as hard a version of PvP as you can find.
Odds will never be in your favor.
Frig fights are virtually over before they start.
Most of the time they have boosts
When they don't have boosts they have a gang with them.

Thank you all for your encouragement and advice! I must admit that it has been quite discouraging so far. I shall check the 'solo' channel, and explore joining a rookie pvp corp. Doing this on my own has been counter-productive. |

Doing it on your own is possible. You need to:
1) lose at least 100 ships before you start to understand what's going on
2) invest dozens of hours in reading anything you can find on the net about ships, fittings, combat and the solo metagame of hide-and-seek. eve-altruist blog is a good place to start, but luckily there are many, many other excellent sources
3) use FRAPs to record your fights, else you'll have NO idea of what happened at first 
Joining a corp is obviously easier and also fun. But if you're determined to take the 'do-it-yourself' challenge, it's doable too.
Remember, your opponents aren't superbeings and even SP doesn't matter much, they just have months or years of actual combat experience. Incidentally, that's what makes solo PVP so engaging: experience is everything and there's no 'win' button. |

Good luck to you though, enjoy those initial losses by clinging to the fact thay (hopefully) you've learned something each time. |

Not true I went wandering on my own in my commie last sunday for 2hrs in low sec. All I found was a procuer mining. I snuck up on him heart pounding, after burning going . i had warped to belt at 50 and was debating if i should have warped to celestial at 50 then warped back to zero. I knew there were 7 people in local but no one was at any belt station planet or gate ( i had checked). My rails can shoot to 15km, but i knew I had screwed up when I noticed my warp disrupter 1 only worked to 7km. I didnt target him to give early warning, i simply ran to him turned on guns web and point and waited until 6999km to target lock him.
I felt so happy as it all went off! there he was, webbed, scarmed shields down to 60%... then he said bye bye in local and warped off. He must have had a warp core stab. I gave him a "gfight" in local and roamed about for another 25mins, but my heart wasnt in it. I docked up later with another unsuccesful roam under my belt. Maybe its just me? I can't even get blown up in low sec :(

I use OBS as my recording software to better analyse my fudge oops. Free and way lighter than FRAPS, also on the fly compression so you don't end your roam with 100gb of raw film.
Advise I got, but can't honestly say I followed to the letter - pick a ship that suits your desired fighting style. Put effort into conjuring up a decent fit. Build as many as you dare to lose and have at it. You'll find that alot of people you go up against will be happy to share their view on how you lost. |

If you catch them easily then they wanted to be caught because they counter you.
If it is hard to catch them then they wanted to be sneaky but they still have a counter to you.
If you can't catch them then you counter them.
Catching the 3rd group is considered pro pvp.
Fooling group one and two into thinking they counter when they really don't is the other pro form of pvp.
you will come across fair fights as well but you will lose them badly as the people looking for them understand their ship and yours better then you do until you have lost many many such fights and thought hard about why you lost.
Find a/ some mentor(s) whether in corp or out to avoid reinventing too many wheels.
Money at its root is a form of rationing.
When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is.

Non-faction-warfare lowsec can be very quiet. Keep trying. Roam different places, and the same places during different time zones. Eventually, you'll find where the locals are hiding. Eve this way is very submarines in space.
Also, if you are after stuff that doesn't shoot back, just fit two warp scramblers on something fast. Enjoy the shock of that lazy venture pilot who thought he could just wander off when you show up on grid.

This is exactly how I learned, and am learning. It's very hard, but eventually you will see some success. It's helpful to over-tank your ship, so that fights last long enough to learn something from them. Your goal, in the beginning, is not to kill ships, but to see how other people fight in particular ships. Once you understand how other people fly specific frigates, fit to kill a selection of those.
I lost about 30 frigates over a month before I got my first proper solo kill. Now I lose a frig for every two or three I kill. The kills will come, if you are persistent, and pay attention.
Just having even one friend, by the way, will make this process much less painful. |

Since it looks like you're going to be staying in cal/gal FW space here's some tips:
1. Avoid the home systems of both sides and the pirates. You're sure to fight a bait and/or linked kitey ship and/or a blob.
2. Learn the strength and weakness of ships. Don't engage a hawk in an incursus. You'll just end up with a lossmail
3. Learn the local area and ask around. There are specific systems that are camped most of the time.
4. Fit your ships better. And keep them cheap. Don't go flying around in poorly fitted ishkurs and welping it into blobs.
5. The biggest guns aren't necessarily the best. Keep in mind of tracking and the PG/CPU requirement.
6. Stick to t1 frigs. You're guaranteed to get fights. Also learn how to use dscan and how to use it quickly.
7. For those with neutral combat alts set them to -5 so you avoid fighting them.
8. Keep practicing until you get a handle of how your ship flies.
9. Try joining a corp that lives in lowsec where you PVP. |

If you are serious about getting better get yourself a copy of FRAPS or similar program and record your PvP so you can watch it back later. Most importantly watch your losses as much as you may not want to, especially when you know you derped a fight hard when it was winnable before that.
The recording will allow you to effectively lose the same ship several times as long as you watch it in order to identify what you did wrong. Maybe you let your transversal drop against an arty ship or maybe you weren't watching your orbit close enough and got inside heated scram range. There will undoubtedly be some things you did well also, identify those things as well and make them habits. Having someone else who can show you were you went wrong can help a lot too. Don't sweat your mistakes too much though, everything is a trade-off and sometimes trying to stay alive and trying to land your dps are mutually exclusive goals and so one will have to be sacrificed for the other or each will have to be done sub-optimally at the same time to come out on top. |
