Are sentry drones on a domi any good? I don't know how they work, and I can't seem to find any explanation. What's the max range they can get?

Im using the caldari ones to hit targets at close to 100km. Their working is simple, you lauch them and they sit there and attack anything you ask them to. They don't move so you got to go to them to pick them up. If the target is within your drone control range, they will kill it. They have pretty good hp when used on a domi as well.

AFAIK, you can get sentries that hit up to 80km, but you need mods (drone link aug?) to increase your control range.
They work ok, they don't move, do some nice damage. I wouldn't suggest having a full load of them, but having 5 long range ones is good for shooing off the annoying 100km gate shuttles.

Actually, they do move I believe, at about 1m/s (if that).

They are VERY nice on an Ishtar-- I had a friend with one helping me run L4s and his sentry drones were putting out more DPS than my blasters and drones combined Sig removed, lacks Eve-related content - Cortes |

Well, their max range varies from drone to drone, but if you check their stats, they have an automatic activation range of up to 250km. I believe that they'll fire at any target that aggros you within your drone control range. So a domi with 6 drone link augmentors, and level 5 scout drones and level 5 EW Drone interfacing, you get 180km drone control range, using wardens with 4 omnidirectional tracking links and drone sharpshooting 5, you get sentry drones with an optimal range of 129.6km. Add a sensor booster 2, and sensor amplifiers in your low slots, and you get the range to target at that range.

Theyre still bugged, Sentries are suppossed to be able to fire on any targets. However due to the hack used in drone code to keep drones inside drone control range the sentries are kinda gimped. Click Me

Edited by: Vandervecken Smith on 04/06/2006 01:20:41 The issue with sentry drones that initially led me to dismiss them was that I accidentally picked one with **** range. Unlike other drone sets, Sentry range and falloff is different for different damage types. I field 2 wings of sentry drones for L4 missions and they perform beautifully. One of the big benefits is that what with drone bugs for returning, as a Domi you want to sit still as much as possible. I try not to move during an entire stage. If I need to bug out, I can scoop the wing, and bug out immediately. Another great benefit is they don't need to run all the way to the enemy to hit, a big plus when taking out cruisers. A third benefit is if you are aggroing separate spawns, the presence of a drone near spawn 1 can cause an aggro on the drone from spawn 2. Sentries get around that. It is important to have a good understanding of what your sentries can and can't do. Long-distance sentries (Warden and Bouncer) are great for taking out cruisers and BSes (though for the high-end BS spawns, sometimes you need a little extra punch you can get from Heavies (or a lot of extra punch if you have T2 Heavies). The short-range sentry drones (Garde and Curator) do a good job on the same. When dealing with Frigates, my Sentries can catch several on the way in, but once they're in close orbit, I need to pull out a wing of mediums to take them out. My Domi carries: 5 Wardens, 5 Gardes, 5 Mediums (choose damage type), 3 Heavies (choose damage type). I take out some frigs on the way in, then cruisers. Then I pull drones and send the meds to take out all but one of the close-in frigs (use the latter for nossing off). Then use the sentries for the BSes. Hope this helps

They may be bugged and gimped and neutered, but they atill are teh pwn. Here's a cute little trick i found: put out the sentries. Move away from them, until you are comfortably in their falloff range (just outside optimal). Now use your target painter on a rat to pull aggro. Sit still and tank. Watch the sentries pick the silly little buggers off. Only very very fast ones still defeat tracking at that range. God gave us webs for that. HF

Also if you put them above a gate because stuff is moving straight towards them basically all of the time tracking isnt an issue.

(for 0.0)
Put Gardes on top of gate (0m - as previous poster pointed out it pretty much negates tracking issues). Most thing will be warpng in within there optimal.
Now, fit a load of Drone Link Augmentors in your highs, sit as far from the gate as possible but still be within drone control range.
Put a load of sensor boosters in mids, lock watever warps to the gate and pwn away. Oh, and 7x Warp core Stabalisers in the lows Your signature is too large! Please resize it according to the forum guidelines. Jacques Archambault |
