Before anyone comes in and smacks you - you aren't wrong.
Most corps are rubbish. On one hand tbf to them it shouldn't have to be a second job and the 'leadership roles' attract people who fail IRL to communicate. On the other they just want grunts for the sake of it. Choose carefully, we can't tell you what to pick.
Talk to people you like and recruit/mentor yourself - it's more about banter than anyone realises. Anyone can create a private chat channel. If your corp obstruct your recruitment (and you're good at it) roll your own corp.
Join every channel you can, keep in touch with people who amuse you in local/forums (and kill you).

Welcome to EVE.
You have indeed stumbled over the largest problems new players face in this game. Unfortunately, there is little advice to be had in this area other than GÇ£keep at itGÇ¥. There are some proper institutions that will pick up new players and let them run wild, but a huge amount of corps are what you have just described: a fancy outward image with nothing behind it (except maybe some corp taxes that you won't get back).
Don't worry about your corp history. Any proper corp will understand that it takes a couple of tries to get it right. In fact, most proper corps will probably be something of the opposite of what you've come across: nothing fancy to inflate their purported exploits, but rather just some basic contact info. Look for those instead. One thing to remember here is that some of them will require some kind of pseudo-interview to get in GÇö remember that the interview goes both ways. You need to figure out if they're a good fit for you just as much as they need to figure out if you're a good fit for them.
A slightly more counter-intuitive way to find a corp is to remember that failure is both an option and not optional: there are plenty of stories about players who have gone into low to get blown up over and over and then end up being recruited into the corp that shot at them because they've demonstrated the kind of determination and spunk that the corp likes to see. It's hardly a guarantee, but it is a way to start communicating with other players and make that first problematic connection. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

I can't give you a lot of hints, I'm afraid, as I got pretty lucky. I was reading the recruitment forum and found a thread which expressed an attitude I really liked, and, lucky me, they also take in newbies. I got in touch with them, first via eve mail then in their public chat channel, and shortly after I joined and I like it :)
So, while I can't give you good advice like others here, maybe you can take this as an encouragement :) |

Shop around the corp recruitment board here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=topics&f=265 Usually you'll find some good starting info there, then talk with their recruiters in-game or on TS or however they do it. As others have mentioned it takes a few times. I went through 2 corps before finding a 3rd one that I enjoy, and on top of that even the corp switched alliances due to being upset about how that was being handled. Corps are a fluid thing, and it can take time to find that fit. Once you do though, it's golden. ISD Supogo Ensign Community Communication Liaisons (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department |

OP, I agree. Going by word of mouth, or browsing through a forum full of ads (and subsequent hate posts, or complete utter lack of followup posts by other people) is not a good way to find people you can have fun with.
I'd go tell you to join Dom's corp, but that would be a bit self serving.
Maybe some tips I can offer you:
- Look on reddit (/r/Eve, /r/Evenewbies, /r/Evejobs), though reddit is infested mostly by Brave and TEST (it's a friendly infestation)
- Look in the corp forum as ISD Supogoisawesome linked
- Join the "community" channels to get more of a sense of corporations (E-UNI, the various shield and armor incursion channels like "The Valhalla Project" or "The Ditanian Fleet", some of the channels under the "Trade" category)
- Some of the NPC corps are chattier than others. Often there are alts who will chat about corps their main is on and why (without intending to recruit)
- Look at the alliances of the well known corps (ie: Look at Brave Collective instead of Brave Newbies).. Alliances contain some smaller lesser known, tight-knit corps with wonderful cultures
- Ignore corps which advertise for both PVE and PVP. Largely these are corps that haven't figured out their niche in EVE
- Ignore PVE corps in Hisec. I mean why bother doing buyback in a place where you can easily haul your own ore and sell it?
- Don't visit the Recruitment chat channel. It is a spam-fest and conveys no useful information
- If you want to join a Mercenary corp, look for their "peacocking" threads in Crime & Punishment. Noir., SYJ and others have some lively discussions..

This pretty much. The flip side is that most corps that are worth a damn are going to be super cautious of you, because spies and corp thieves. Your best bet is to network with friends in game, hang out with people and get a feel for what the corp is like. I hate to say it, but as the new guy expect to do a lot of grunt work at first regardless. The first corp I joined made you mine your own first battleship before they let you PvP so you understood the real value of that ship. (Took me two weeks with t1 mining lasers and some harvies)
(STK Scientific blew up that one)
But basically yeah, talk to people, get a feel for the corp. |

Oh holy balls, what a terrible thing to do to a newbie.
You know what the value of a ship is? However much it hurts for you to lose it.
I mean, that entire lesson pointless if you just don't mine. You can find a battleship in a day or two of running level 4s or doing just about any other isk-making activity.
OP, don't join a corp that basically tells you "You must suffer for X days before we'll let you have fun." "EVE is a dark and harsh world, you're supposed to feel a bit worried and slightly angry when you log in, you're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, that's what hello kitty online is for." -CCP Wrangler |

That was sort of the lesson.
This was back in the days that ships really were not for sale in most of low sec and not at all in null, and of they were they were a 200% markup at least if you found them. So the corp had to provide ships if they were lost (because none of us could afford Battleship bpos on our own). This meant the logistics wing had to do all the mining etc to keep the pvpers in ships, or make the run through Gonditsa from Yulai to buy them. And there was always fighting going on. This was the big buildup in Aridia right before the BoB/FA war. |

Don't get me wrong. I love Eve. But one of the issues, for me at least, is the lack of quality sci-fi/spaceship mmo's out there to compare it to (vapourware doesn't count lol.) Currently Eve is in a league of it's own in that regard.

Killboards don't lie. When you're checking out a few corps for PVP, check their recent kill history to find out what times they really fly and how often.

This is my first MMO so maybe I dont know how "guilds" actually look like, but if your corp has 4 active members please dont tell me 10-15.
Whatever number of corp mates the info has divide that by 2 just to get a starting figure. Everyone has alts so the corp numbers are automatically misleading. If the corp is a few months old, its already got inactive players. So you gotta just kind of factor off the remaining members with a wild guess.
If a corp advertises as being active in all timezones, and in all areas of space (hisec, lowsec, nullsec, wormholes), then they are active only in 1 TZ and only in hisec, and most of their members have probably quit Eve already.
I like to shoot things, so the only thing that is important to me is their killboard. Doesn't really matter if it is red or green (losses/wins) so much as there is stuff on it. Whatever pilots you see on their killboard, that is who is active in corp. If its the same 3 or 4 guys, thats all there is in the corp.

You can give a newbie a ship and skills and all and she/he will play for a day. Teach a newbie how to EVE and and he/she will play for life :).
I know because i spent years dong ... well just about nothing. But, you keep training, you keep learning, and one day you will indeed find what you are looking for. Having said that, try not to jump too many corps. That stuff raises flags, because it gives impression of being a flake.
My advice, such as it is, is to be picky at the start. Not picky in a way where you will keep rejecting corporations on every little thing. But rather be picky in a way where you ask a lot of questions before you join. Make sure you click with folks in corp and that the corp is something you would like to be a part of !!! Ask very pointedly as to how many players are on during this period of time. It is fairly easy to see when people are talking crap. Also check the age of corp. Check killboards, check corp roster ..... it is a lot of work, but in the end you will be much happier once you do find a corporation that fits you, rather then jump from one to another because you could not be bothered. |

This is my first MMO so maybe I dont know how "guilds" actually look like, but if your corp has 4 active members please dont tell me 10-15.
That TZ thing you can plug yourself, my peronal fav ppl ingame are way off tz for me, but makes no difference.
gl :) Keep in mind though, running a successful corp is hard work and dedication. You can be as laid back as you want, but without a proper backbone, you will end up just like those corps you've left so far. This is as nice as I get. While i realize that the above comment is not really serious i want to comment anyway, because its partly right.
There is a lot of people that will yell and scream about long employment histories, saying that if you have been in more then 4 corporations in less then 5 years your obviously a spy and so on, however, many of the people who do this is often also the kind of people that freaks out because someone has a bounty on them (come on, anyone who has a bounty must be bad person right ), or thinks that just because the person in question once shot a MTU he is a pirate.
Recruiters tend to be paranoid, as they should be, but sometimes the paranoia goes a bit to far. This especially seems to be the case with "new" recruiters. New enough to not fully understand what to look for, but old enough to have experienced their first corp theft or awoxer.
However, recruiters who has been around for a while (or just happen to be really good at reading people and trust their gut feeling) tend to be better at judging the potential recruit on more then their employment history. Of course it might raise a red flag if a recruit has been in 20 corporations during the past year, but chances are that if the recruit in question has a good attitude, seems like a good fit, all other back ground checks dont reveal anything suspicious and have a valid story (true or not) that explains the amount of corporations, the recruiter will give the person a chance.
In some cases this happens even if the person has a shady back ground. Again, it all depends on the recruits attitude, and the recruiters feeling about said recruit.
In the long run.. No matter how much research you do on a person, the gut feeling is what decides whether or not the recruit is accepted into the corporation. Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

Tippia wrote:Welcome to EVE. A slightly more counter-intuitive way to find a corp is to remember that failure is both an option and not optional: there are plenty of stories about players who have gone into lowsec to get blown up over and over, and who have then ended up being recruited into the corp that shot at them. After all, they've demonstrated the kind of determination and spunk that the corp likes to see. It's hardly a guarantee, but it is a way to start communicating with other players and make that first problematic connection.
Any pvp corp that doesn't do an interview, provide links to their killboard when asked or require an api that they actually check is to be avoided. I am shy of recuiting people that don't also try and interview me about the corp. If they don't have standards and want to check we meet them then they are unlikely to meet ours. Money at its root is a form of rationing. When the richest 85 people have as much wealth as the poorest 3.5 billion (50% of humanity) it is clear where the source of poverty is. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/jan/20/trickle-down-economics-broken-promise-richest-85 |

If you have JUST started, and are truly a new player and not just a spai, skill point loss isn't much of an issue.
Create a couple of different characters in different starter corps; you pick the corp when you pick the bloodline of your chosen race. You may be surprised to find that a couple of the starter NPC corps have a robust community and ties to player-run corps as well; personally, I recommend School of Applied Knowledge (Caldari race, Achura bloodline). It was thus quite some time before I left that starter corp.
From building bonds in the starter corp, you can better choose any number of player corps or start your own. Or stay in the starter corp for a little while longer, since it is not particularly restricting for the new player in the least. You may eventually outgrow it, however. If that time comes, you'll know when and what it means.

OP - most pubbie corps (ones that you would join from the corp finder in game) are horrible. Join a corp based on an out-of-game community or at least one that has some definition like E-uni, RvB, Fweddit, BNI |

Check a corps details, it will tell you many members that corp has to get a rough estimate of actual players (excluding alts) there are, do 2 sums divide it by 3 divide it by 5
it won't always be accurate, but it can give a reasonable guestimate as to real numbers that you could be looking at
there are several sites where you can lookup players, corps & alliances eve who battleclinic zkillboard to check those various claims .. pretty sure there are others aswell maybe someone else will link them for you
have a good read through what Tippia wrote, whilst I disagree with him on some things there is good advice in that post. |

If you're in an area you like, keep flying in that area and pay attention to who is in Local with you. As you start noticing some groups more than others, add those corps and alliances to your standings so they stand out more in Local, and put a few of their CEO's and recruitment folk on your watchlist. As time goes on, you're going to start recognizing which groups are more active in the time you are, and you'll start seeing what type of range they as to where they fly, as well as what they fly (killboards are useful for this, as well).
At the same time, many of them are probably noticing you. Not actively, no, but passively, they're used to seeing your name in Local with them, and they start noticing what you fly, as well, simply because they see you when you're on the undock, or at a gate, or simply passing through on D-Scan.
Once you've identified a few groups who seem to have similar interests and active times as you, see if the have a public channel, and go in there. Chat with them, get to know them better. If they question you, just point out you've noticed them in the same areas that you fly, and were curious about them. As time goes on, as both sides have gotten to know each other better, see if you can start joining them in fleets (this will probably take a while, though some groups are quite willing to let you join fairly early-on).
If you find that both parties mesh well with each other, talk to them about potentially joining their corp. Conversely, if you find that that the two of you don't work out quite so well, you can walk away without any real loss, and yet have still gained a better understanding of them (as well, if things don't work out, the knowledge you gained flying with them may prove useful in the future should you encounter them in a fight :).
Getting yourself into a decent group isn't too difficult, it just takes time and patience. Better, though, to spend some time on it than to end up with a group you aren't so fond of and end up quitting because of it. Ransoms are accepted in Isk, Ships, Mods, and Dolls. |

Welcome to EVE. Since you're new, you might find the idea of a high sec perpetual war interesting. It's a benchmark for yourself to get used to PvP mechanics while staying in high security space, and close to Jita for shopping needs. We are based 2 jumps from Jita.
Joining a low, null or wh corp at the beginning of your capsuleer life might be a little overwhelming. Being thrown into the deep end of things before you have grasped ideas of ship types, your strengths and weaknesses, could prove fatal to your enjoyment of our beloved game. Not to mention ISK costs of a costly mistake in low null or wh.
We aim to bridge this gap, with active fleets, and a smooth learning curve towards PvP. Though we hate to part ways, we also believe that even if you learnt a single useful thing in PvP, our job here was done as you pursue your future career.
