(I'm a civic-minded heretic.) The risk of having your day ruined by other people is the cornerstone with which EVE was built and we want to keep that (infact, this is much more representative of the consensus opinion within CCP). |

I think its unfair that we are supposed to be enemies

Not much.
Hey, look how fast I'm going in space after applying continuous thrust for an hour!
Exactly as fast as I was going 58 minutes ago.
And so on. Space is a liquid. There's always room for Jell-O. Do you know why there is always room for Jell-O? because it slips and slides and finds a spot. http://vincentoneve.wordpress.com/ |

I think you just need to suspend your disbelief, sit back and enjoy the ride. tl;dr - Drink until pressing F1 becomes the most serene, elegantly complicated, sublime depth of zen combat possible. Otto Weston wrote:EVE numbers are ridiculous. We all know itGǪ yet I decided to do some fun calculations to find out more about XL weaponry and the numbers involved. So for the following ridiculous eve numbers GÇô I have used the NaglfarGÇÖs Depleted Uranium XL shells.
Firstly, this XL shell can come in two sizes.. 3500mm or 2500mm. I will run calculations for both of these sizes. https://image.eveonline.com/Type/20739_64.png From the above picture, we can work out the approximate shell size. The base is 5mm in diameter and the height is 15mm. By using that ratio, we find out that the 3500mm shell is 10.5 metres tall and the 2500mm shell is 7.5 metres tall. Next IGÇÖll work out the volume of each shell. The Problem is, that the cone isnGÇÖt perfect and is rather round. Therefore IGÇÖll calculate what a perfect cone would be volume-wise and then add 20%.
That is a drawing of a shell with a propellent case, that appears to me to be about 75% propellent by volume (and propellent has significantly less density than steel, let alone depleted uranium).
oops!
Whilst I'm being pedantic I'll also note that EVE projectiles seem to have an explosive damage component which implies the presence of a burster which will require most of the internal projectile volume, but will have similar mass to the propellent.
You are probably orders of magnitude out with your calculations. Note that even if the projectile doesn't have a burster, it will only have the momentum that the supplied propellent volume can provide.
Ships historically were only moderately vulnerable to pure kinetic damage, and later ships that had subdivision and non vital areas even more so, which is why meh to caldari kinetic missiles and why I presume that kinetic minmatar ammunition has explosive effect - its intended to have a burster, since you really have to wreck the insides of anything to stop it shooting back before it wrecks you.
Even if the game is simulating nuclear propellent and nuclear bursters, nuclear devices need internal voids otherwise they'd be critical when assembled, and although there is kinetic force available as a design alternative one imagines that its more reliable to still use conventional (not very dense) explosive to initiate, further reducing density.

I just can't help but thinking if a Titan was blown up orbiting a planet that its subsequent wreckage could potentially cause an extinction event on said planet. Poor, poor local fauna and flora. :'( |
