In regards to internet speed, I hear two main schools of thought. The first and most prevalent (that I've heard) is you only need enough speed for what you need and anything else doesn't matter. If EVE, for example, runs fine with a 10Mbps connection, 100Mbps won't add anything to your experience. The second way of thinking is that faster is better and as close as possible to instant is the goal, and those people pay more for faster connections. What do you think? Is faster better?
Anyway, back to ping times, say I did have a high ping time that adversely effected my play experience. Would an incredibly fast connection help offset that?
From what I understand, and I am a lone tech, not an engr so that for what its worth, and in my own personal experience:
More speed is good. For this simple reason. Say eve uses a total of 10mb per second to play 100%. So you go 'oh I only play eve, i'll pay for 10mb and be fine' Now lets say you oh idk, start mining, and then you decide to watch a Netflix video. Well eve is using 10mb... and now net flix will use 10mb... so now you have an issue where you are going to choke. Something is going to not pull in what it needs.
Same theory but this way. My inlaws had a 1.4 or so mb dsl connection. My wife and I came to visit for a month after having our son. My mother in law and fathe rin law had no issues using there net with just them. BUT, they then added 2 more smart TV's, a roku box, 2 ipads, and my father in laws desktop. Then you add in my laptop trying to play star craft, and eve, and my wifes laptop playing FB games and what not. And it was completely unplayable. Everything ran at dial up speeds because we were killing the connection. So when we moved in (mother in law has a major illness) I upgraded them to cable (6.6mb uverse vs 40mb cable) We can run everything with no issues.
Now for ping, it depends on why your ping is high. If its high because you have low bandwidth then yes more speed will help. If its high because say your link tot he internet backbone is down or being DDoS'd then nope, more speed will not help. 10 years of eve... yea i'm an addict |
