Edited by: Jar Hethorian on 25/09/2003 14:43:53 Hey all, I'm a newbie of a few days old and I'm learning the game slowly. I'd like to dabble in a bit of everything and figure out what I like. I've been doing a bit of mining but it's pretty slow and I can't hold a lot in my Amarr Frigate. Is there some way to expand the capabilities of this newbie ship, otherwise which ship would one recommend that is moderate in many things such as cargo, drones (which I haven't tried yet), weapons etc. Not too specialized in one area I guess. I think my ship is called an Impairor right now.
As for my skills and attributes, I have a fair amount of science/engineering/electronics that I started with, and I favoured my Memory and Intelligence attributes. Not in a corp atm.
Thx ppls :D

Also, if you plan on doing some more mining, a Industrial ship (bestower is the best to start out with) is to recommend. The skill for Amarr industrial is 100k if I remember correct, and the price for a bestower should be around 300k.
The good thing about this is that you don't need to go back and forth between the belt and station all the time. You jettison the ore you get into space, and then keep moving the ore you mine into this container untill you are done mining. Something you should do each 30 minutes is to replace that jettisoned container. Simply jettison some new ore, and you should have two cargo containers near you in space. Now you move the ore from your first container to your new one. It is really simple.
When you have decided you are done mining, you go back to your station, activate your Bestower (the industrial ship), go back to the belt and pick up your ore that is in your container and move it back.
As with most things in Eve, and also in real life, time is money. If you keep going back and forth with your little ship, it will take about atleast 1 minute before you are back mining again.
Now say that you fill your cargo hold in 5 minutes of time. And in an hour you should be able to get 10 full cargo holds mined and gone back to station.
If you would have used a industrial, and only going back and forth one time with it, you could have done 5 minutes of extra mining, and that is some extra money.
This get real important when you fit on more lasers and mining drones. I fill my cargo up each minute, and if I wouldn't have had my bestower, I would double the time it takes for me to mine.
I hope my explanation is good enough.
Enjoy your rocks :)

Great Description from Christy Turling'on but be warned! If you think you¦re safe in 1.0 you¦re right, but not the jettisoned container... It¦s a known problem that some "funny" people fly into the safe belts and lift you cargo. And if you open fire on them you¦ll be the bad guy!
Hope this will be solved soon.

Or get an Executioner or Punisher and start blowing things up.

Edited by: Hort RIthan on 26/09/2003 22:30:58 I think I will go with that tormentor as it's nice and cheap. Maybe get a few upgrades and go exploring/agent missions or maybe join a corp.
Hehe this is Jar btw, I've already changed chars as I'm sure most newbs do in the first few days ;)

To avoid leaving those cans in space, but still quicker than flying your ore back and forth to the station all the time, you could mount a Mining Laser on an Industrial ship (I first did it with the ultra-nimble Hoarder) and just fill your hold in one trip.
Of course, that takes like 90 minutes with just the one drill, so you might want to bring a book.

Yes, my idea is having the risk that anyone could come by and pick your stuff up. But I took care of that problem to find the least populated solar system with a station and then I stayed there till I was done mining :)

Getting a Tormentor is a great tip for a newbie like me. I saved up and purchased the Bestower only to find out that one must spend an additional 300K to obtain the industrial skill necessary to operate the Bestower. Oh well it's back to my Tormentor and some more mining.

Are there any Industrial ships that have space for Drones? (Minmatar) Im thinking about getting a Mammoth - i think thats the model with a couple of level 3 slots. Im hoping at least I should be able to equip some mining lasers and some cargo expanders, but bringing my drones from my Probe would be ideal!
Cheers for any info!

It was solved, use secure containers. . And taking items from jettisoned containers is not stealing, it is the law of salvage. In real life we have flotsam and jetsam, and the exact same rules apply. If you drop a shipment of wood into the ocean, and it washes onto the beach. . finders keepers.

You should have seen the spat in the Chaven system the other day. A chap called Dr Stein kept 'stealing' cargo that was sitting around in space. People do get upset but, if you don't want it stolen, then lock it up. To Boldy Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

This may be a good time to start learning to categorize ships. You'll need this later on whenever you decide which cruiser or battleships to get.
Basically, mining ships need turrets, drones, and cargo. The more the better. Easy. A "good" mining ship will have lots of the above.
Combat ships needs are more complex. Generally, a combat ships is generally marked by stronger shields/armor, and a lot more CPU and power to support guns. BUT, you need to look at the weapons it's geared for, and the number of medium/low slots, to figure out what it does.
Lots of high slots means a fire-power ship. Lots of medium slots generally indicate an EW, or shield-defense ship. Lots of low slots indicate a tank/heavily armored ship, usually.
Usually, not always.
Look at the cruisers on the market and figure out how they're supposed to work / what they've been designed for. |

No. No Industrial ships have drone bays, and no Industrial ships can mount more than one mining laser. The Mammoth does have 2 high slots, only one of them can be a turret (like a mining laser).
I like the mammoth because it's more maneouvrable than the other big indys, but the Bestower (Amarr) and Iteron V (Gallente) carry more cargo.

Thanks for the info. Looks like secure containers then and drop them into space after being mined with my Probe, then picked up using the Mammoth :-(
Cheers for the info!
