Hi there,
I was chatting with my corp mates about boarding and I think we could see this as a form of attack.
Instead of having the usual 'target ship - shoot ship to bits - shoot pod', we could have boarding skills and ships to actually take control of ships. Maybe we could have special ships for that, assault barges for example, as well as the necessary skills for that (boarding, leading assault, leadership...).
You would have to get close enough to a target ship to board it, which would have to be under web stasis (it would be silly to be able to board a ship going at 500m/s for example). Once boarded, the attacking ship is attached to its prey, and the assault takes place. Here we would need a new form of combat mechanism to know if the assault is successful or not. I assume the success of an assault would have to be linked to the number of soldiers boarding as well as their weapon/training superiority, i.e. you can't take control of a battleship with just half a dozen of guys. So CCP would need to introduce new characteristics for ships, i.e. an ability to board and an ability to repulse assaults (boarding being the actual move to attach itself to the prey and assault being the attack by soldiers to take control of the ship). You can then have different modules and skills to improve each offense/defense characteristic (in-ship laser protection, force fields, drug-crazed troops...).
I think this would really add spice to battles and this could make wars a lot more profitable. If you can confiscate your ennemy's ships and re-use them against him/her or sell them off it's a lot more effective than just blowing them to pieces.
Obviously the self-destruct feature would be a problem. Most players would be tempted to destroy their ships rather than seeing it seized. Maybe having a timer on the self-destruct feature would help, i.e. it would take 1 minute before actual self-destruction.
Ok, those are my thoughts for the moment, I'm sure it's full of holes but I think it's an overall good idea. :) Let me know what you think, thx
