Why? from my understanding if anyone flys the ship you insured and they lose it neither would get the insurance pay out anyways.
So whats the point in having to repackage ships at all.
I know what your going to say "its so you can fit it into industrials/frieghters " but why should i lose my insurance just so i can haul a few ships of mine from A - B.

Because repackaging removes all extraneous database information, including insurance information.
What do you expect EVE to do when you, say, stack an insured ship with a non-insured one?

Repackaged ships can be stacked. Which of the 12 Ruptures did you insure? Repackaged ships can be sold. Not very fair for a ship builder to make their ships, unpack, insure, repack, sell, collect insurance if ship destroyed in less than 3 months. Repackaged ships loose their unique identity in the DB. The list goes on.
Instead of some massivly complicated and unavoidably buggy system the devs actually did something right and said repackaging cancles insurance.
Also, there is actually a very simple method where corp's can build, insure, and allow various pilots to fly the ships and the corp(usually CEO or Industry Lead) still collects the insurance when the ship is destroyed.

Edited by: Pardack on 10/06/2006 13:22:44 I've wondered the same thing everytime I have to move more than a few ships around.
Currently there are 2 states of ships, assembled and packaged. Adding a third "packaged and insured" state that gives the ship a different icon would be a nice solution. Insured/packed ships would not be stackable with non-insured or assembled ships.
Insurance continues to count down, packaged or not and when re-assembled, the ship retains the insurance information.

I like pardack's post the best, why shouldnt there be another option to package your ship so you can haul it in an industrial keeping your insurance without being able to stack them.

because then you would need a LOT more items. one for each ship for each insurance level __________________________________

you could just have that particular "package for shipping" option NOT remove the database info, simply change the ship's volume attribute.

You wouldn't need one for each insurance level. The ship would retain the insurance information, so if you buy platinum the ship remembers it's platinum.
It would create exactly one new shiptype per ship. Instead of packaged or assembled, you would now have packaged, assembled and assembled and insured.
Personally, I'd even pay some kind of (reasonable) fee to do just this. Making one or two trips instead of ten to move personal/corp insured ships is worth a small fee IMO.

I forgot to reply to this. Whoever insures the ship gets the insurance. When it blows up the insurer gets the insurance ISK.

not true, if a ship you insured is destroyer while youre not the owner, the garantee is canceled.

Good point. I was thinking more of corp insurance.

Packaging a ships means disassembling it to a degree, now who's to say you'll put back all the proper parts once assembling again? No insurance company would pay up for someone shifting in faulty parts.

Why dosen't EVE refund the time left on the insurance contract when you repackage a ship? You wouldn't get the whole amount back, but why not the money for the time left on the insurance contract?
