This is a game that actively pursues it's player base to acquire second and third accts.
Alts are not just generic characters people make because they can. They fill a need. Usually a specific one.
What I'd like to propose, as an anal retentive skill sheet guy, is the option to start a character with zero SP. If there's one thing I hate, it's looking at a skill sheet and seeing a bunch of starter skills that will never be trained because my Cyno/PI/builder/etc will never use them.
There has to be other players that feel the same. At least enough that we can get CCP to look at no SP as an option to tick for new builds. I'd rather start with zero SP than 50k that I'll never use.
Anyone on side with this, or am I the only one?

What about simply giving the new alt the 50k in SP and allow them to be placed where you want them? |

That would be the ideal situation. But even a pathetic unassigned 50k SP for new characters will start a **** storm on the forum ending in a locked threadnaught. I figure it's more likely to get no SP than 50k to use as you will.

Yeah some work would need to be done on the creation process to help guide new players. You could have a few templates like industry, combat, exploration, etc etc. Once you pick one of those the SP are allocated, but then you have the option of moving them around if you like. Sort of like the attribute points during a remap.

Most likely. I'm not exactly sure why anyone would consider less than a day's worth of SP game breaking though. |

"CCP!! We get too many 'useless skills' when starting out! Remove that 'useless SP!'"
"CCP!! The rookies do mot get enough starting skills! Give them enough SP when starting out so they don't have to wait hours before they are not totally useless!"
"CCP!! Why are you giving all this unallocated SP out?? Rookies do not know where to put it to be useful and this is further proof of appeasement to the veterans!!"
This is a no-win, no-win, no-win situation. The status quo thus remains to keep the peace. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

I wasn't actively playing when they changed this to the current system, so I'm unsure why they changed it. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. |

Dude what a fake out. I thought you were suggesting to get rid of the absolute need for alts and improve the solo experience as well as the interaction with other players. So it's just your OCD talking here... +1, but whatev'

I wasn't actively playing when they changed this to the current system, so I'm unsure why they changed it. Because some characters started with completely insane levels of SP compared to others. My memory's foggy, but I seem to remember some being allotted up to ~800k SP. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.
Some even started with Laboratory Operation V if I remember correctly, meaning that new research alts were trivial at the time. |

At that time, all characters started with 800k.
I remember if you picked a certain Gallente sub class, you could be in an assault frigate in a week or so. Or a Caldari Achura for the 3 charisma. There were no remaps back then so you needed to really know what you wanted and try out different starting setups. If you got it wrong you were stuck with it forever.
