Because some people seem to have the misaken idea that this would help them against 256 Napocs all shooting at one ship. GÇ£SandboxGÇ¥ does not mean that you will succeed at anything you attempt; it means you can attempt anything you want to succeed at. One of the largest obstacles in the way of your success is other players. |

While it's a nice thought, it's not something that is a big necessity. You can put your snowflakes in their respective squads and have the squad commanders warp at the proper range or if you know where you need to be you can warp yourself. I don't think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, it would be nice for the FC to control every aspect of the fleet but at the end of the day you need pilots who can be autonomous and not require the FC to do it all. When you make it so the FC does everything you make it so you have a growing percentage of the fleet population that doesn't know what to do once the commands stop coming in. It is really hard to change your signature settings |

I remember CCP soundwave saying that he doesn't want to implement them because formation would offer no advantage. I strongly disagree with that statement and feel it would do wonders for fleet combat and move us away from blob warfare and towards more realistic and strategic fights.
So now that soundwave has left CCP, if anyone has any news regarding CCP stance or if you simply have an opinion regarding fleet formation, i would be happy to hear it.

Until there is line of site firing there will be no need for formations other than "DPS blob here, Logi blob 50KM behind the DPS blob"
I can imagine how much fun and headache it would be to keep your ship out of the firing line of your own fleet mates guns... The problem is, fleet formations are entirely useless. To make them at all useful, you'd have to change the entire dynamic of how fleet fighting occurs (ie no more Fleet A all shooting at one ship at a time). I've thought out some ideas how to pull this off, and I might post it in my own thread but I'm sure the community would be very polarized. |

Getting out of that ball of ships into... formation is as much part of the battle as the rest. Just like avoiding warping in like that can be. |

This is a topic that surfaces a couple of times a year. Some players want it, some could care less. I suppose if more AOE weaponry was in use beyond bombs (which are not so damaging to large ships with good logistics) formations would be more relevant. Unless I was up against goons who I hear have some good SB tactics in large engagements.
It is kind of a buzz kill to hear of great fleet battles in nullsec and then you see the video of it and it's a clusterball of ships in a fireworks display. But that's just the way it is. Bring back DEEEEP Space! |

Why are all of these dropping out at the same range? The difference between ships in a warp bubble is measured in meters, which is piddling. If you want ships to arrive at difference ranges in terms of kilometers, that's what squads and wings are for.
If you allowed formations to warp with warp bubbles measured in terms of kilometers, say hello to the grid-covering sphere of tackly interceptor doom. Enjoy never being able to kite ever again. True, and that does remove one reason for formations. Quote: So a formation "feature" for fleet fights would be useless imo.
Not true. There may no line of sight, but different elements of your fleet do want to keep different ranges from various elements of the enemy fleet, and from each other. That's the impetus for wanting a formation in Eve.
IDK how many fleet fights you all have been in, but generally, in skirmishes with varying ship sizes you warp the tackle in first at close range, the DPS in at 0 or slightly at range and then the logi, snipers, caps etc, X KM away based on size and roll.
hmmmm sounds like the "formation" you all keep describing, to me >_>
If you really wanted all that to happen at once, or maintain it on the field you use a long standing fleet concept called anchor ships where everyone in the group of a certain ship type orbits their designated anchor ship and the anchor ship keeps that set of ships in position.
Also sounds like a "formation" on the battlefield to me.
But hey what do I know?

Okay, opinion seem to be split as to whether fleet formation support would be useful and i think the relevant points have been made now. Thanks guys.
I really like the idea about fleets being able to exit warp in a preset formation. Fleet formation is already a big part of PVP but I feel without in-game support, the blob formation will always win.
If nothing else, i hope that we see fleets fighting in formation because it would look awesome! +1 |

One of the many things that drew me away from fleets fights is the discrepancy between the Eve trailers and the real fleet fight look where ships are are all over the place direction wise.
Fleet formation would be great for that immersion aspect.
In term of game effect, what about moving 10 or 20% of links effect for wings that are following formation set by the wing leader! with the type of bonus being given by the selected formation. A simple UI for each ship would help ships fall into said formation, matching formation speed and position, and each ship would receive the formation link bonus if they are within their expected position. "surrender your ego, be free". innuendo.

I've been preaching this for years now my friend.
Frankly the aesthetic advantages to having the ability to make formations is reason enough on it's own to justify implementing them, and that is the least compelling of the possible arguments to support them.
Fleet fights are one of the biggest remaining eye sores in EVE, and video's that consist of nothing more than a big ball of mess turn interested folk into amused folks that move onto something that fits their idea of what a high tech space battle should look like.
Options to include artificial advantages to being in formation have been discussed... personally I don't feel that is necessary at all.
There are many inherent advantages to having all of your ships in an optimal position to support their role in a battle, not only at warp in but while maneuvering the whole thing (or conveniently separated and place parts of the whole thing) into the optimal positions to be effective. Logistics being in the perfect placement to provide optimal support to the most ships (and each other) at all times, no bumping, no lost speed, simpler fleet alignment, able to break or rejoin the formation at will... or break off in equally well optimized subsets for specific purposes.
The list goes on an on.
I had a great deal of respect for Soundwave and I believe he did a lot of good for this game, but his stance on this I could never get behind. Especially with Tessellation on the horizon with all of the possibilities that it brings. If you like EVE Online and War Thunder content stop by my YouTube channel.-á

Ah, the inevitable result of these expectations is... not likely to be positive.

I truly see something as simple as the autopilot button. Something like engage formation, that lit up after the wing commander has selected the desired formation and the pilot is in a set range of the wing leader... Then with this on, the ship will simply maneuver it's best course to reach it's designated position within the formation and keep it until the pilot decides to take control again... Thismwould be only for movement, of course, all targeting, and other actions would be manually done by the player.

What i see is the problem is that formations have a very real purpose in the way warfare implements it.
But in EVE, there is nothing that you can gain from forming an aesthetic line/box/circle. So it becomes pointless (although pretty).

In regards to the notion of ships landing on grid in different ranges (for example, logi 50KM away from the main fleet), this can already be done within the game now. It might be something that they can implement, but really, how hard can it be to cancel fleet warp and warp at range?
In regards to flying in "pretty" formations like arrows etc etc. Then this also can be done in the game now, but you need to set it up manually. Besides that, this doesn't really bring any value to the current combat system. So I don't see a need to develop such a thing. |

Agreed, and though I dont have a problem with things being pretty, I dont have a problem working to acheive it either
And in before "But you could change the system to make it have an effect"
Yeah, you could, but we all know thats not happening
"I know but its a shame"
No, it isnt. SOme formations already would have an advantage.
