My favourite films have been mentioned in loads of other threads.
I can't wait to watch Cidade Baixa (Lower City) at the weekend. It sounds like it could become one of my favourites.
Haven't seen anything else this year so far that springs to mind as being great.
I did get Enter The Dragon for ú2.97 in Tescos the other day. Has to go down as an all time favourite!

Rather than spout off a repeat of the best films list on the IMDB (which I mostly agree with), I'll put a few here that are on my personal favorites list but aren't "truly great films."
1. Appleseed (2004). Utter CGI ownage: it makes Advent Children look like a joke.
2. Battle Royale. I love this Japanese live-action film. It seems silly at first, but it actually has a very good ending.

EDIT: As a side note, I think Starship Troopers is one of the most underrated and wrongfully ridiculed films of all time. See beyond the action and don't try and take the propaganda in the film's world for real world propaganda, it is supposed to be ironic and set the tone with entertainment in mind.

In no particular order:
Jacobs Ladder Long before the Sixth Sense made it popular there was this Movie
Akira This changed my life when i first saw it, highly subversive.
Shawshank Redemption Still cant believe they made a good film from a Steven King story
K(kaku kid(tai This covers them all really, awesome films and series.
The Abyss The bit were she has to drown
Contact A horribly underated movie in my book
Saving the Green Planet This is a truly strange movie. Should I be laughing? Should I be cringing?
Battle Royale lol, at the kid with the bin lid. Chiaki Kuriyama, why is she always a complete nut job in her movies, cute but still a nutjob
And a ton others that you all couldn't give a toss about

good taste in movies. im sure you've seen mr. vengeance if not check that out too. miikes chinese triad and dead or alive trilogys are good. personal fav is deadly outlaw rekka. if you're in the states, netflix is a great source for asian films. i just saw the korean movie "memories of murder", was awesome. oh yea, miike makes brief cameo appearances in "last life in the universe" and "hostel". kinda cool.

Fight Club Spirited Away Predator Aliens Army Of Darkness Scream Silence Of The Lambs Howls Moving Castle Perfect Blue Identity
Just a few of mine, i mainly like a film with a good twist at the end or summat that is just totally original like Miyazaki's films. Silence of the Lambs i enjoy since it had my heart rate going mental, Identity was a great idea, Army is just funny as hell, Fight Club is just the truth abotu how we live our lives like lemmings. Other things like hills have eyes is just pure brutal and doesnt shy away from things like mindless murder and rape. Aliens i respect cos first time i watched it i was bout 11 and it gave me nightmares for 2 weeks and i looked like a turd, now its an amazign film and i have all the books. Scream is another of great twists, 2 killers?? thats messed up. the original Wicker Man is a great film, UK readers it was in HMV or Music Zone for abotu ú8 for the directors 2 disk edition, thats a weird story and is kinda chilling. Most films i watch i enjoy and picking out sole faves is virtually impossible, i'd have to narrow it to abotu 30 lol as long as it has summat a bit different or is so original that it forces othe rmovie makers to copy similar ideas then i enjoy it.

I also liked "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou". It's not a great movie, which is probably why no one else has mentioned it, but it had a really nice atmosphere. I'd like to see it again sometime.

I mentioned it
It's a movie you'll either love or hate. It's a film about characters, not plot or action, and the characters are very good. The atmosphere is also pretty amazing, from the dumbed down special effects to the simple upbeat music, the quirky characters to the even more quirky interactions between them. And this is why it's one of my favorite movies, it doesn't try to bring amazing special effects or huge plot twists which means it also can't fail at these things. Too many movies these days try very hard for these things and then fail miserably.

RobotJox was absolutely ace, there was a second one as well which was just as cheap, think i have the first one on a VHS Rip sumwhere if u need a copy. Evemail me if u do. Some the older movies are quality, Braindead is sooo funny, the Lawnmower scene is just so blood drenched its OTT by miles. Th every poor live action He-Man with Dolph Lundgren was so great when i was a kid, with a really dodgy Courtney Cox and dude who played Tom Paris in ST:VOY. Some my other fave oldies probs Gremlins, Teen Wolf, Critters, Childs Play 1 & 2 then they got silly, Nightmare On Elm Street, Godzilla Movies, I Spit On Your Grave, Girl Meets Boy, Evil Dead/Within The Woods. All quality in an 80's/early 90's way and u cant beat Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, totally cowabunga dude

Stealth?!?! Who said that ?, lol to be honest i went to see it at the cinema. I watch just about everything that comes out on the big screen. The only reason why you would want to put Stealth in here is because of Jessica Biel and her fantastic ---, ummm.......moving on!
Donnie Darko Fantastic movie, great sound track, some awesome scenes. Prooving that you dont need a massive budget to make great movies.
Butterfly Effect I know, I know but if you can get over the fact its Ashton 'I look a little slow' Kutcher and the wee bits of ham that sneak in at bits. Its a very enjoyable movie.
And as others mentioned
The Andromeda Strain - 70's classic, tis a brilliant movie. Twelve Monkeys - Im actually annoyed i didn't remember this one, great movie.
So many movies so little time.
Whats your hurry? Everyone will have his day to die. If you choose to pull the trigger! Should your drama prove sincere! Do it somewhere far away from here!! |

High five. You explained it better than I could.
