When i was a newb i did lvl1-2 missions and didnt make too much. But I ratted in lowsec and got a lot of isk that way and eventually bought myself a ferox to do lvl3s. I never did lose my ferox, in fact i blew it up a couple of days ago to get the insurance pay out. And another thing is after doing lvl3s for about 3-4 weeks i gathered enough mins to build a battleship(Dominix) which i plan on flying very soon.
Just hang in there and save some money for a battlecruiser and run lvl3s(30mil implant storyline missions are nice ...

Making isk is as simple as mining veldspar.
The reason people don't is because it is mind-bogglingly boring. But if you really need isk badly in order to be able to risk it learning how to do something more fun, mining is your dull, dull and safe ticket to riches. ------------------------------------------- "Never underestimate the power of language."

Use your cruiser to make enough cash for a ferox. Ferox will allow you to rat in 0.0 and do lvl 3 missions. You can then work your way into a battleship.
To get my first Battleship (megathron) I mined kernite and the like in my moa (later I switched to gallente ships and I picked up a thorax. Recently I've made the switch back to caldari ships though but now i'm specced in both) and it took a very long time back then.
Now days you don't have to mine at all unless you want to. You can easily do ratting and missions to make plenty of money for ships. Not to mention with the addition of battlecruisers, assault ships, etc.. You don't even have to jump into a battleship unless you want to.

a good way to make money is to join a corporation that live in 0.0 space, get in a hauler and go with some corp members that likes to hunt rats in 0.0, often, these players won't loot the cans, and will gladly let you do it, you then sell the good items found and refine the others, you can make many millions each days this way, and you'll have a battleship on your own in no time

First thing I was told when I started was: "This game is a real grind to begin with, don't give up on it though, as it's so much more". I worked my way through the first couple of weeks, and have never regretted it.
It doesn't take long to gain your footing, and once you do, the game is completely different. :)
