Hello,
just sent out the following mail to some friends (I keep a 20+ people MMORPG mail list, and have been doing for many years). No-one has to agree or disagree - I post this to see what the general reactions here will be. Get a notion of how things are generally viewed. Be specific in your comments, please. Do not copy text unless you *have* to. Oh and ah - you do not have to agree with me, but I expect you to be polite. Flames say nothing about others - they say a lot about *you*.
(start mail)
NOTE: I have omitted all names.
Hi <omitted> I have just (1 minute ago) decided I might leave EVE, although I am not 100% certain yet. You should certainly have a look: it is great fun until you have to go into low sec space. But after several weeks of *damn good fun* I just got 'ganked' by 2 griefers (I have no other word for it) in Battleships (basically, a couple of tanks running over a beetle). This was while doing (actually having just completed) a rather fun and hard mission. They killed me, then pod-killed me (which tells you they are just out to destroy your game fun). I have to think on this: I could go back and play in Secure Space maybe. Just decline any mission that sends me elsewhere. The game *is* very good fun, otherwise. But I do not like to legitimize griefing: I think people who fail in life are now further failing in the games they 'play'. I do not think it is wise to make anyone feel 'uber'. I want to be able to do all my missions, not just a few. I also think it might be a good sign for the EVE team if they read my short (something like what I just said) statement, knowing I have cancelled my account and that several more people who I would have asked to come here will now receive an e-mail from me (hence some of the CC's in this message) that it might be smarter to wait until EVE offers a non-PvP switch or something like that. Many games have it and their subscriptions (EVE) would jump sky-high I predict. They seem somewhat uninformed of just how many people (I alone have spoken to dozens) simply stay away from EVE because of the whole 'forced PvP' thing. Many players in EVE will say it is PvP. This is not PvP by any stretch of the imagination. It is swatting a fly. CoH/V is PvP. All chars to same level in the Zones. WoW is decent PvP: teams with level brackets for PvP activity. DAoC is decent PvP: level brackets for Realm vs. Realm zones. There are more. EVE is simply 'uncut'. Which means: one bored griefer can destroy a hundred people's fun in just a few hours. Not very intelligent, to let that be as it is. Many things have been changed for the better since Beta. But this is simply a faulty game dynamic. It is the worst structural failure I have ever seen in any MMORPG (and as you know, I have been in and studied dozens). Enabling a person to basically one-shot you and make that event cost you *many* hours of gameplay (even if all max_insured) just to get *back* to where you were...that is preposterous. I fear this one little mishap has sort of cured me for today, and I feel I should cancel sub to make my point. I would definitely get the trial though, if I were you - <omitted> have all bought the game I think. I suggest you just have a look first. Tell me if you do, and what your charname is? I have several ships I can join you with, depending on how this comes out in my mind. My first month does not end for several days I think. Also depends on how <omitted> think about this sort of thing. Gimme holler gals & guys? Your perspective in a /reply to all please?
