I think we can all agree that as far as the "New Player Experience", or NPE as the devs like to call it, is concerned you are very much correct in the tutorial being inadequate in it's informing you of how probes have an expiration timer.
But that's about as far as I or most anyone else where will agree with you.
The built in scanner on the ship tells you if there's signatures out there and will even give you the general direction of them.
After the probes are launched they're already placed in a formation for you and will all move as one. Using the pinpointing formation with all probes at their widest range it shouldn't be hard to get at least one or two signatures in the area to a "red dot". From there it's really easy to move the probes closer, reduce range, scan, and repeat.
Tips: - Carry 16 probes with you so that once you launch the first 8 the second 8 in cargo will get auto-reloaded - You can double click a signature that shows as a red dot and the camera will center on it, making lining up the probes in 3D space WAY easier - Clicking on a face of the cube will let you move it in both axes on the plane of that cube face - Red sphere means only one probe can reach the signal, red ring means only 2 probes can see it, in these cases it's generally a good idea to move the probes 3/4 of the way to the other side of the ring/sphere from where they already are so they can all hit the signature. - It is possible that you can't get a signature to 100% at all. This is just a harder signal to scan and you need a ship with a scan bonus and better skills to get to it. This shouldn't be a problem to the tutorial ones though.
Generic tips: - Show info on EVERYTHING, if it's a ship read traits, otherwise read their descriptions first, then check attributes and mouseover stats you don't understand. Most of the stats on ships have a tooltip that tell you exactly what they mean. - Tooltips are your friends and are on nearly every button. If you're learning a new window, mouse all over it. - Right click everything. Almost every table entry or item in space or in cargo has multiple things that can be done to it and right click is where you can access them all. Sometimes just seeing the actions to can take on an object can help you figure out what it's for or what it does. The Drake is a Lie |
