Sum it up:
There are several locations pirates can hunt:
- 0.0 gates - low sec gates - 0.0 belts - low sec belts - 0.0 stations - low sec stations - complexes
Now lest go into details:
0.0 gates: Camp an 0.0 gate is possible, but traffic is low. Zyrine and Megacyte transports are done with carriers since last patch. Large alliance blobs will intercept pirates. Haulers and freigthers are well escorted.
Threat level: high Possible ISK: low
0.4 gates: Camp a low sec gate can be done with snipers or sentry tankers. Since sentry guns really hurt, sniping is the best option if you are alone. As team a mix of sentry tankers and snipers works smooth. Carebears bring everything to you an dont even try to warp away or fly in a 90 degree angle to your gunships. Bascially they act like lemmings and bring a lot of ISK. Piratehunters bring additional ISK when you kill them.
Threat level: medium Possible ISK: high
0.0 belts: "Empty" is the best word. While Eve has thousands of belts, only few will contain a target. Once you enter local people instantly warp to safespot or log. Alliances will send out blob to kill you.
Threat level: medium Possible ISK: low
0.4 belts:
Empty - more targets than in 0.0, though. Once you found someone you might loot 2-3 miner IIs. Not to be compared to a low sec camp where carebears bring the whole corphangar to you.
Threat level: low Possible ISK: low
Complexes: 0.0 complexes are usually "camped" by alliances and they will sent all they have to keep pirates out. So if you show up with 2 ships you will 50 interceptors on your a$$. Low sec complexes are not very interesting. Like low sec belts you might loot some n00b stuff, but nothing really exiting.
Threat level: High Possible ISK: low
If you check the list, you will find out why camping a low sec gate is the most efficient way to pirate. You also will find out why it is good to use snipers, if possible combined with sentry tankers. The ISK are on the gates! Nobody brings a corphangar full of BPOs to a belt or complex. But everything that can be built, transported, refined or sold will be found on a low sec gate.
Pirates want ISK!

Quote: i disagree with a lot of the things u just said lifewire. complexes isk potential is extremely high as most ppl take faction bs or faction fitted bs into them. i've made a small fortune from killing complexers. secondly 0.0 is high threat lvl but also very high earning potential if ur good. risk v reward is quite balanced in eve atm. pvp'ers often use good equipment and carriers are still only owned by a very small percentage of eve and haulers are still used a lot with high end mins and equipment in. 0.0 belts i would say very few ppl log or instantly warp to ss as eve is full of plebs who stay there for ages after u enter local. the rest of what u said i fully agree with tho
This might be what you experienced. You CAN loot some nice stuff in complexes, i agree - but you WILL loot whole corphangars at gate. My big hits have all been at gates - i talk of billions of ISK and not 1-2 good named items. Did you ever loot 5 bil ISK in a complex??? No? I did at a gate.

Quote: But ur right gate pirating is the most profitable pirating by far, but also the most boring
It used to be, yes. But we experience more and more that piratehunters attack us daily. This way we get ISK and fun. On some days we get attacked very often. It¦s a nice cat and mouse game we play with them and i really start to like it.
But yes, 1 year ago a low sec camp was boring, omg. You were lucky when you got attacked once per month.
