Apparently there are only 1,853 female and 1,712 male names that are legal in Iceland. Harriet, apparently, isn't one of them.

It's ok, it's not like foreigners like me or you can pronounce those names properly anyway :P
Some of them are such a mouthful we need to use surnames / nicknames. Ah yes and good luck trying to call a taxi into a street name. Remember that Icelandic volcano that bothered the rest of Europe for a while? They couldn't call it "MegaBadAngryVolcano" or "Mount Doom" or something like that, they had to call it "Eyjafjallaj+¦kull".
Seriously, it's like speaking Klingon family names, but without the nice perks (no bladed weapons, no cool uniforms or cloaking device).

The Viking in this is so ingrained - the article implies that about 50 new names are approved each year. That sounds to me like a rate match for new names that would have been introduced by the Viking raiding parties each year.

Well, the article explains that the name "Harriet" is inappropiate because it can't be conjugated properly in Icelandic language, which probably would make it bothersome or impossible to use.
So that makes sense... At least to the part of my (romance language speaking) mind that hasn't been blown by the idea of conjugating names. Q: So many well known dev's left lately, should we be worried? A: (Jester): Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.

I sorta agree with this. But then again, what do they do with names of foreigners? They just never talk about them in their own language? xD
I guess discouraging names which can't be used properly in their language makes sense, sort of .. Denying their citizens passports because of that seems quite harsh, though. |

Viking paraphernalia is at least as cool as Klingon - swords, axes, dragon boats, horned helmets, mead. They eat boiled sheep heads, and whales. They have volcanoes so active that you can poke them with a stick and shut down all of the airspace over Europe, if only you can find a stick. Icelandic people give Klingons a run for their money any day. www.everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com

That myth is especially irritating.

You should embrace it. Horned helmets may be historically inaccurate, but they are indisputably badass.

Those are antlers, not horns. And to be honest, I think samurai are almost as badass as vikings. Probably better fighters, but less fun to share a horn of mead with. www.everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com

If one takes into consideration that the world does not only consist of the United States but 194 more countries, then one could perhaps note that in other countries, the legal age to drink is 16 years of age, or 18 is usually the most common.
I really doubt however that in any of those other 194 countries, you can kill people 3-4 years before you can have a beer, unless an Islamic state where alcohol is prohibited.
Another strange thing is, since you brought me back on topic, that apparently in topless strip clubs in that one country, you are only able to go to once you are 21 years of age ( I believe it is in some states of that country, maybe it is all, don't know for sure), because alcohol is served, but the fully nude strip clubs, you can go while 18 years of age, because alcohol is not allowed to be served.
And also, a group of 18 year old guys want to go play some pool, they are not allowed to go into a pool bar, even if they only want to have a glass of milk, because alcohol is served at the pool bar, but then again, you can sit on top of a building somewhere, popping heads with a sniper rifle until there is now tomorrow (or until out of ammo) with 18 years of age.
I am not from Iceland, but some people don't have to look so far away if they are trying to find something that is very weird. |

True but racism is often hidden in jokes and of course it's all perspective. If one back person yells to another a certain word it can be a greeting but if I were to yell out the same word I probably would get shot.
I just dislike people thinking they're better than others because they feel their culture is superior. It's not just Americans that do this of course. I'm not saying that's the OP's intent but it does come off that way. |
