A friend of mine started playing eve this week.
He knows absolutely nothing so I explained to him the basics of how ships work, got him into a caldari frigate fitted with 2 launchers, a railgun, a shieldbooster, afterburner and PDS on.
When he had trained to get all of this stuff online in his petite ship I joined him for his first level 1 mission (in a megathron hahaah). The system was Sobaseki. A Caldari Navy Q14 lvl1 security agent lives there.
I had the lad gang me up and decided to come along to advise him a bit on how to handle things.
There were 3 destroyers and about 20 frigates there, some with jammers on and I just went WTF? This can't be a lvl1 mission!
It is way too hard to do for those who just got their first frigate. Most lvl2's used to be easier then this.
It is okay to make the lvl2 and lvl3 missions a bit spicier, but imo CCP should not have touched the lvl1's. Now we'll just end up with thousands of miners

It would help if you give us the name of the level.
If that was Worlds Collide mission, I can understand your initial concern.
However, if that was Worlds Collide it's just unfortunate that that was his first mission, even though that level is doable for newbies.
I helped a buddy with lvl 1 missions, and usually it is enough for me stick 2 fingers in my nose and release a few drones.

I agree with Dread Blah about Worlds Collide. I got that one early on too, and it really ripped me up then. I thought I had to kill everything, not just race right by them to the next acceleration gate. Once I did that, the mission was much easier (although still one of my favorites since its still challenging).

Well, I understand the concern. I am atm raising standings with amarr navy on my industrial alt to get better refining yield etc... So, i got The Score (New version) from an agent and had to warp out 5(!) times and rep my tristan to finish it.
Tristan fitting:
2 x 75mm Scout Rails 2 x Rocket launchers Afterburner Repper 200mm plate Adaptive Nano
He lacks a little in the combat skill department, I'll admit to that, having Gunnery lvl2, Small hybrids lvl3, missile launcher op lvl1 and rockets lvl3, but he also has gallente frigate lvl5, which gives him a pretty decent dmg bonus, and probably a lot more skillpoints than your average lvl1 missionrunner will have.

Those missions that had their L3/4 versions changed apparently have also become tremendously more difficult in their L1 form. Notable examples of this are "The Score" and "Intercept the Pirate Smugglers". They took me numerous warp-outs even in a destroyer, with fairly decent skills. Others, such as "Avenge a Fallen Comrade" or "The Serpentis Spies", are as easy as ever.
If this is an intentional change, it is a poor one. Even if it is possible to complete them in a frigate, the time and effort required to do so are way out of proportion both with the other L1 missions and the point in time at which a (new) player would attempt them.

was in the same system and a pair of newbs who were on the worlds collide mission were asking for help in local after losing a destroyer and a pair of merlins, was in some t1 frigate and not really set up for missions. helped them anyway, got shot to bits and have a lot more skills than newbs. Just into armor and not structure fortunately :)
some missions could be easier for the newbs or have worlds collide as a later mission, say after 15 or so successful ones

Worlds Collide is really a little problem, as there are to much and to hard opponents for a just started training newbie. Also the jump into the first level takes you directly into a bulk of pirates (under 3000m distance) und right in to a strukture, so that it is possible to stuck there. Even with activated shieldbooster I and Kinetic Deflection Amplifier I against guristas you need a large amount of Luck to get out of range or into warp, before you¦re forced to take a detailed look at your rescue-egg. You need an effective combat range of at least larger then 20 km and high speed, to take out the opponents one by one or the destroyers works you into plasma.
I loss two Merlins (2x 125mm rail, 2x Missile Launcher I, Shieldbooster I, Kinetic Deflection Amplifier I, NB I, 2xPDS) there, before i decided to reject this Mission-Type. The high reward should have me become more suspicious :).
Maybe i don¦t get the right tactic or have to modify ship equipment yet. But i¦m not interested in further experiments until i got my cruiser or this mission is nerved.
PS. Sorry for my english. I¦m a little out of practice.
Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

I had 'The Score' the other night. I've been playing about 6 days and I found it really hard. I did it in the end but it cost me two rifters and a few guns (and lots of hair :p)

I can say, I'm fiarly specialized in cal frigs, and I could clear out a world colides in a merlin without dropping under 70% shields, have to say the fitting and merlin all together have costed me around 3 mil. So I can imagine a rookie will have problems with that mission if he wants to clear everything out. Some missions though don't need you to kill all badies and can be done with a minimal of combat, also most big numbers of enemies are only grouped with around 4-5. Wich means aggro one group, build up distance with other groups to make sure you don't aggro them while taking out the first one.

What I found for completing Worlds Collide 1 was that you were really better off going in with no intention of tanking. I went in with a nice Destroyer and set it up as a strictly sniping gun boat. Longest range rails I could get to all fit and not spend much money on, then maxxed out optimal with long range ammo. Then as soon as I warped in I turned away from everyone and hit afterburner. All it really takes for level 1 is a non civillian AB to get them out of firing range and you can pick them off one by one.
This should still work in a Tristan or other combat frig, just that back when I did it I was easily able to train for the destroyer and came in with extreme predjudice at losing my Tristan.
Just gotta remember if your tank is being out gunned, switch to sniping and you won't have fear of death, you should easily be able to get out of range of the turrets as well. Though if you ever get this as a first mission you will not be able to fund the sniping yourself.
Usually if you start out running missions from your home station, or at least one within the same gate you won't see Worlds Collide for quite a while unless you happen to be very unlucky.
