Joe Alliance can mine truckloads of mercoxit, he can claim the bounties of thousands of rat battleships, he can earns tons of LP's running level 4 missions in 0.0 space, he can be part of an alliance which controls hundreds of solar systems, he can network and find a slot in a group that farms 10/10 complexes, he can become a seasoned pvp'er and align himself with similarly-skilled pilots and fly around ganking noobs...
But if he gets podded once, he'll earn fewer skillpoints than Joe Empire. And that's the main reason I'm still in empire. I've got a moderate amount of ISK, but can't fly anything that costs more than pocket change. I could venture off to 0.0, maybe make more ISK than I do today... but why would I when I don't have the skillpoints to use that ISK? It's possible to jump in a battleship within a couple of months, but it takes many more to train the necessary supplemental skills to fly a battleship properly. And if we're talking T2 equipment, or even better, T2 ships... well that takes even more skillpoints.
From what I've read on the forums, if your first goal in the game is to fly a battleship, you'd need somewhere in the region of 8 millions SP's to do so adequately. How long does it take to get that many SP's? About 7 months? Isn't it interesting that the average EVE player plays for about 7 months? That means that a good half of the population has a skillpoint deficiency... and the quickest way to remedy that shortcoming is to protect your implants and hump veldspar in empire.
Until CCP makes it so that you can earn skillpoints faster in 0.0 than empire, a lot of folks like myself are going to keep hanging in high security.

OP, I wouldnt get so hung up on the size of your SP's. While its great to have tons of SP's and +4 implants in Empire, theres no PvP, personally I wouldnt find that fun.
Also due to the lack of PvP if you were to put up an Empire Carebear who thinks he is the dogs balls because he can solo Lvl 4's in 3.02 minutes flat, up against a 0.0 PvP'er or an all out pirate, in a fight, the Empire Carebear is going to lose his ship, his mods and his implants.
That 5% difference the EMpire dweller had from training a few extra skills to Lvl 5 over the no-implanted 0.0 dweller, is going to count for nothing against a pilot who knows what hes doing.
Anyway...combat boosters are coming with Kali. I predict all 0.0 residents will become Booster junkies, I know I will if they are cheap enough. Be shovelling them down my throat like candy if I can afford to.

Just make your first goal of the game to have fun, and you'll worry much less, be it about ISK, Implants, or flying a BS instead of this funny frig. _________________________________________

Oh I'm having fun, I just think a lot of people misunderstand the reasons why some of us hang in empire. Everybody has a carrot that attracts them, be it wealth, power, glory, experience, intelligence... or skillpoints. For me, the attraction is skillpoints. Until that changes, I'll stay where the skillpoints are most plentiful: empire.

Personally i think you are making the game too much about skillpoints and it might be preventing you from developing in it. When you have 48 million skillpoints after 4 years, im pretty certain you wont miss the 1 million you didnt get because you died a little.
Edit: And that implies losing 1 month of training time in those 4 years just from getting killed, which is very, very worst case scenario. --- The Eve Wiki Community Portal | Eve Tribune |

P.S. You can buy a +3 for pretty much every 2 hours you are in 0.0
Exactly how often do you think people get podded?

The thinking that all of 0.0 is lined with gold is so wrong (have you ever been to syndicate), I could make 10x more Isk in empire grinding level 4 missions, but I choose 0.0 for the fun

Empire people tend to think that 0.0 people are getting killed more often then they are when they haul their stuff through lowsec =p
Fact is .. i am a very young character and i am currently living in 0.0 solo on my own sometimes with a corp/RL mate, but mostly solo and with a bit of brain you will actually never get podded unless you happen to accidently run into a fleet. On a sidenote i must admit that i am using jumpclones to jump in and out of my implants mainly to travel from 0.0 to empire, but that does not change the fact that i have yet to be podded in 0.0 (that is after 2 month of 0.0 straight) ----------------------------------------

I think they are too awkward with the 24 hour cooldown on them.
Also, Im not sure its worth bothering with +4 and +5 implants. Training time isnt everything and i think those +2 extra points compared to +3 implants doesnt really give more than 30 minutes faster training per 24 hrs or so. You gain about a extra million sp per year.
Note that im very much guessing here. Im sure someone can run the math on it to be sure, but i doubt its very significant.

Fair enough. The point that so many 0.0 dwellers completely fail to understand, is that a lot of us choose empire for the fun. ________________________________________________

Its just that Ive been in empire and 0.0. and I must have missed the "fun" empire area. From the blob on the map Im thinking it must be around Jita? Signature removed - File size too large.Laurelin |

I really wish people would stop trying to convince each other that their playing style is the more 'fun' way, for my part everybody is free to play this game as they like as long as it is within the rules of CCP and they don't try to force it on others.
Why would i not play my game in empire if i choose to do so? If others choose to play in 0.0 well good for them, i hope they have as much fun as i have Banner will be updated shortly |

Well maybe - just maybe - some other people don't have exactly the same mindset as you do, and find different things fun from what you do. ________________________________________________

I have characters in 0.0, and some in Empire.
I like both places...
Some days I like to kick back and play for a few hrs in Empire with very little risk.
Some days I like fleet ops and POS killing, or whatever...
That's the beauty of having multiple accounts IMO... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE

went twice into 0.0, once pretty deep :p
i got killed once, at the exit point of the 0.0 region
entry points, 0.4 gates to empire = that's where most are killed
deep 0.0 was really nice, and well less risky than some 0.4 places i know hehe -

Deep 0.0 is very nice.
I've only been up to Empire once since I moved down and that was via jumpclone, to train a few more skills, and then back again the next day. I didn't even undock. : )
