Van Nistelroy would have buried most of those chances in the 6 yard box, stop falling out with each other and get some team spirit, ever the Dutch failing for some reason.

Plus we've got a revenge motive for the penalty loss in the Euro Cup and "Big" (mouth) Phil Scolari dared to turn down our job offer!
And no injuries or suspensions, Sven is so lucky it is just not true.

All that giving the ball back stuff has gone too far, it was Portugal's goalkeeper who needed medical attention, why should a team who is 1 - 0 down give back the ball?

You could argue they are having their cake and eating it if they both get medical attention for their keeper and get possession back.
*edit - can someone remember, was it Portugal or Holland who put the ball out?

Ok I stand corrected, but I think the move had broken down by the time the ball went out.
But the point still stands - they put the ball out, they get attention to their keeper. Seems a fair exchange, so Dutch are entitled to keep the ball.
What should have happened is that the ref should have said "This is a proper drop-ball and I expect both of you to challenge for it." Instead Figo did not challenge for it and complained.
But refs can't tell players what to do unless it's in the rules, and giving the ball back is not in the rules at the moment (nor should it be).

Well yeah I know, but that's what I'm arguing against.
There was that huge confusion involving the Czechs (I think) where both teams kept giving the ball back to each other, for precisely the same reason: ie -
Side A puts the ball out to get attention to their own player. They give up possession and get an advantage in return - so it's even.
The ref should make clear - it's a drop ball and it's a genuine drop ball, both of you compete for it damn you!
Come on Tuxford, have a go at balancing this! Eve is easy in comparison.

Not giving the ball back to the side that put it out is likewise. It's *allowed*, but if you want anybody to like you, you won't do it.
I got to agree, a controversy like this was always coming. Just like Eve, if it's exploitable, it will be exploited.
And just when it looked like international football had learnt a bit of collective responsibility and "honour"! Oh well.

Trouble is, it usually will only happen towards the end of a game where the other team is one goal down, and you don't get a chance to do it back to them.
Don't worry, England are going to make Portugal look silly in the next round (sorry Portugeese fans), Rooney is back in business!

True it will be tough, but "pound-for-pound" England look better, and Sven has all his options on the bench but Portugal are 2 good players down (at least).
The pace and variety England can introduce in the last quarter of the game is going to be the ace up Sven's sleeve.
(..goes off to see what the bookies make of it)
