I'd be embarrassed to call that a win, to be honest. Advancing because the Swiss penalty takers were completely inept is nothing to be proud of.

They were not inept, just young and way too nervous. They didn't miss in training.

Well, those inept football players shot enough goals to qualify for the world cup and be group first with 7 points (2 more than France). You did not watch the other matches and the training where they did not miss, so stfu Trev

Much kudos for your country getting to the World Cup Siren and then for getting through to the 2nd phase. A lot of countries would give thier right arm(mine for one) for that.

Thanks  Switzerland has less than 10 million inhabitants... having so much talent to reach the second phase in a world cup, despite such a small population compared to others, is quite an achievement imho.

um, most play to win, and not to entertain,,
btw, did you see the qualifying matches, Ukrain won huge their group that had , Denamrk, Tyrkie, and Greece (that won Eourope champ.s)

Switzerland didn't even appear to be playing to win. Get to penalties was as much ambition as they had, from what I could tell.

Shiva you are being too partisan. The penalties were completely inept and you tend to find that the younger players have more confidence rather than less. The old guys know all they are going to end up with is a Pizza Hut advert if they miss. The young'uns know they might get another chance in 2 years time.
Ironically, one of the best players in yeeerrrrpppp, Shevchenko, missed his.

...which is not to say that the players are inept, in general. But they sure as hell were during that shootout.

No, I dont find that. I know this team, and when somebody trembles, blinks, and his tongue flicks repeatedly before kicking, then he is clearly nervous as hell. Some young people might be more confident, but when the whole team consists of young players most of which have never been in a REALLY important match before, it is safe to assume that they will be nervous. Especially if they play for a small country that has not reached the 1/4 finals in 54 years.
Shevchenko missing wasnt ironic, Zuberbnhler is one of the best goalies in the world, and he held. Switzerland is not the first country in world cup history to reach 1/8 finals without taking a single goal without reason...

Besides, they did not 'miss', the shots just were not perfect, and the Ukrainian goalie was able to hold them.
actually i did watch all the swiss games - and most of the others  i wasn't aware you were motiering my veiwing habbits.
and you can't really blame nerves, although they played a part nerves would have affected the ukranians aswell. thus meaning it must have been a poor performance from the swiss team
also i think this is ukraine's first appearnce in a very long time if not their first time ever (not sure though i seem to recall the commentator sying something like that thouhg) 
also i think you'll find that one of the shots was infact "missed" as it came off the cross-bar and goalie's saving it counts as a "miss"
But yes congratulations the clean sheet record is impressive, shame your players were unable to capitalise on it

Wow, I wasnt aware you had such hidden fondness for Switzerland... never noticed before! Not even all of my hardcore football fan swiss friends were able to watch all of the matches, respect.
Some people or groups / teams are more affected by nerves than others for various reasons, I'll argue with you about psychology when you're done studying it. Dont forget to send me a postcard when you are done

meh watched all the footie cos i was on study leave, watched and revised at the same time
