I've tried to find an answer in previous postings - I'm sure it's been described before - but i couldn't find anything about it, so here goes:
How do you activate scout drones so they defend your ship if you get attacked while mining?

There is no automatic way (yet)... I do remember my drones attacking rats on their own if I came under attack, but that's some months back, and I might remember it wrong.
You have to do the work yourself: lock a target and tell them to attack.
Just because we are paranoid, doesn't mean you're not out to get us. |

From my experience they attack nearest your attacker automaticaly without giving them order. Well and the nearest doesnt mean 50km far away... u have to check it.

well as said above there is no way to set them up to auto target and auto fight.
but they do respond if you get attacked(most of the time) but they will not defend them selfs.

Exactly. It used to be that if you left your drones deployed they would autotarget and attack any rat that attacked you. While this mechanics still holds, NPCs now prefer to target and attack deployed drones first (they as noted do nothing to defend themselves and just sit there and take it while orbiting you).
So, if you decided to violate your EULA by parking a Thorax in a 0.8 with drones deployed and leave it to macro-mine while you have supper you'll come back to no more drones, and some serious damage to your ship. My assumption is that this was a deliberate change by CCP to discourage cheating, but I may be giving them too much credit ;)
OTOH, if you are at the keys, and make sure *all* rats are already targetting you before deploying your drones, they will make a mess of the rats without taking much if any damage (missiles excepted). So they're still a great tool for mining, but not for AFKing.

Oh, stupid idea by the way.
